There is no universal two-year replacement deadline. Replace your smartphone when it no longer receives security updates you need, cannot reliably handle essential tasks, or has several problems that make repair uneconomical. If the battery is the only major fault and the phone is still supported, replacing the battery may be the smarter move.
Start with safety, then check software support, diagnose the specific problem, and compare a repair estimate with the cost of an equivalent supported phone. A battery-health reading of 80% is a useful service signal for some models—not an automatic order to buy a new phone.
Make the decision in this order
- Is there a battery safety problem? If the phone is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, hissing, or physically damaged, stop using it and arrange professional service.
- Does it still receive security updates? Check support for your exact model, region, and carrier. If updates have ended and you use sensitive accounts or work apps, replacement is often the safer choice.
- What is actually failing? Battery drain, slow performance, full storage, and poor reception can have different causes—and may call for troubleshooting rather than a new phone.
- Would one repair restore normal use? A battery or screen repair can make sense when the rest of the device is sound and supported.
- Does the repair make financial sense? Compare the actual quote with an equivalent replacement, the remaining support period, trade-in value, coverage, and the likelihood of other failures.

| Security support has ended and the phone handles important accounts | Plan to replace it with a supported device |
| Several components are failing or repair approaches replacement cost | Compare replacement options |
| Battery is swollen, smoking, or dangerously hot | Stop using it; arrange safe professional service |
Signs it may be time to replace your phone
Security updates have stopped. This is a stronger reason to replace a phone than its age alone, especially if you use banking, email, work, health, or authentication apps. Without current security fixes, newly discovered vulnerabilities may remain unpatched. Support varies by model and is not the same as receiving a new operating-system version.
It cannot do the tasks you depend on. A phone may still turn on but fail to run a required app, maintain a reliable cellular connection, navigate accurately, take usable photos, authenticate you, or meet accessibility needs. A missing new feature by itself does not mean the phone is obsolete; focus on what you actually need.

Several parts are failing. A cracked display, unreliable charging port, broken buttons, faulty cameras, damaged frame, or intermittent radios can add up. A crack can also expose the phone to dust and moisture, impair touch response, and leave sharp glass. Do not assume damaged or repaired hardware retains its original water resistance.
Performance remains poor after basic troubleshooting. If a phone is still sluggish after updates, a restart, app checks, and storage cleanup—and especially after a clean reset—it may have hardware or capacity limits that maintenance cannot solve.
Storage is persistently inadequate. Removing downloads, unused apps, or backed-up media can free space, but it cannot increase a phone’s built-in storage. If routine use repeatedly fills it, a replacement with sufficient capacity may be justified.
Repair is unavailable or uneconomical. A repair quote should be evaluated against a realistic replacement, not a promotional monthly payment. If the phone is unsupported, has multiple faults, or would need another likely repair soon, replacing it may be the better long-term choice.
Check whether the battery is the problem
A declining battery can cause shorter runtime, unexpected shutdowns, and charging frustration. But fast drain alone does not prove the battery is worn: weak cellular signal, screen brightness, GPS, camera use, background activity, heat, cold, a software bug, or a damaged cable or port can contribute.
On iPhone
Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Review Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and any service or performance messages. Apple explains its battery and performance features in its iPhone battery guidance.
Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed for up to 80% at 1,000 cycles, under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not guarantees about an individual phone’s real-world performance. See Apple’s battery service and recycling information.

On supported models, open Settings → Battery → Battery health. Google describes “Reduced” health as capacity below 80% and recommends considering battery replacement. The screen is not available on every Pixel. For diagnostics on supported models, open Settings → Battery → Battery Diagnostics; options vary by model and Android version. See Google’s guidance on Pixel battery health and battery diagnostics.
Google’s stated design targets are up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles on Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, and about 1,000 cycles on Pixel 8a and later, when charged as recommended. These figures describe design expectations, not guaranteed outcomes.

On Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones
Android battery-health menus are not standardized. Open Settings → Battery and look for battery health, diagnostics, or usage; you can also check the manufacturer’s support app and official service flow. Treat third-party app estimates as approximate, not directly equivalent to Apple’s or Google’s own readings.
Is 80% battery health a reason to replace the phone?
Not by itself. Apple and Google use 80% in specific battery guidance, but manufacturers’ measurements and labels differ. A phone below that level may still suit a light user; one above it may have poor runtime because of an app, weak signal, or another fault.

- Below 80%: A new battery becomes more compelling when the device is reliable, supported, and worth keeping.
- At any reading: Swelling, smoke, unusual heat, or physical damage calls for safety action—not a routine upgrade decision.
Apple’s battery guidance and Google’s Pixel battery guidance provide brand-specific thresholds and context. Do not treat them as a universal rule for all phones.
Replace the battery or the whole phone?
A battery replacement is usually the better first option when the phone still receives security updates, has adequate storage and performance, and its display, cameras, charging port, speakers, and radios work properly. It is especially attractive if you like the device and the repair is substantially less than buying an equivalent supported phone.
Replacing the phone is more defensible when the battery is only one of several failures; the device is already beyond its published support period; necessary parts or qualified service are unavailable; or the repair quote is close to the cost of a newer device that offers meaningfully longer support. A repair may also be a poor fit if the phone has liquid or structural damage, or if repair could leave you without a feature or condition you rely on.
There is no dependable universal rule such as “repair only if it costs less than half the phone.” A premium phone’s repair may be worthwhile even when expensive; a low-cost phone near the end of support may not justify a modest repair. Use actual, model-specific estimates. Apple’s battery service page provides estimates by model, and its out-of-warranty fees can vary by provider and inspection. Google directs owners to its repair flow; Samsung offers repair requests and service-center lookup. Check coverage first: Apple says AppleCare battery service is available at no extra charge when capacity falls below 80%, subject to plan terms, and its service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remainder of the applicable warranty, whichever is longer.

Check software and security support by exact model
Look up the exact model’s support commitment rather than relying on a brand-wide estimate. Check whether the commitment covers operating-system upgrades, security updates, or both, and when the clock starts. Carrier, region, and variant can affect update availability and timing.
Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of operating-system and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold receive five years from that point. Confirm your model and timeline on Google’s Pixel update-support page.
For Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones, check the published policy for the exact model and region; do not assume every device from a manufacturer gets the same duration. Samsung provides update instructions, but rollout timing can vary by model, carrier, and region.

Apple does not promise one fixed support period for every iPhone. Check the current iOS compatibility information for your specific model and distinguish compatibility with a major iOS release from the availability of security updates. Do not infer support solely from the phone’s age.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Troubleshoot slowness and battery drain before upgrading
- Restart the phone and see whether the problem persists.
- Install pending operating-system and app updates. Updates can fix bugs, although an update is not guaranteed to improve performance on older hardware.
- Check available storage. Remove unused apps and unnecessary downloads; back up important photos and files before deleting them.
- Review battery use by app. Restrict or remove apps with unusually high background use if you do not need that activity.
- Check for heat when idle. Persistent warmth can indicate an app or hardware issue. Heat can also worsen battery aging.
- Temporarily limit unnecessary background activity and test whether runtime or responsiveness changes.
- On Android, try Safe Mode if a third-party app may be responsible; the steps vary by manufacturer.
- Back up before considering a factory reset. Reset only after less disruptive checks fail and you can restore your data and accounts.
A reset can remove problematic apps or settings; it cannot restore worn battery capacity, add storage, repair a modem, or extend the manufacturer’s support commitment. If the phone remains slow after a clean reset, reconsider its hardware limits, storage, and remaining support.
Overnight charging alone is not a reason to replace a phone. Modern charging-management features can help manage charging, while heat and prolonged time at a high charge can still affect long-term battery aging. Pixel owners can review Google’s charging-optimization settings; other manufacturers offer their own controls.
Battery safety: stop using a swollen or dangerously hot phone
Stop using and charging the phone if the screen or case is lifting, the battery appears swollen or punctured, the device emits smoke or an unusual odor, or it becomes extremely hot during ordinary use or charging. Arrange professional service. Do not squeeze, puncture, freeze, immerse, or put a damaged battery in household trash.
A phone may still work with a swollen battery, but that does not make it safe to continue using. Do not attempt a DIY battery repair on a swollen or physically compromised device. Apple says not to ship a device with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery; check the service provider’s instructions before transport or trade-in at Apple Trade In.
One model-specific exception is the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program. Google says certain impacted devices receive battery-management changes after 400 charge cycles because of a potential overheating risk; the program ended July 8, 2026. Check the program details if you own a Pixel 6a; this notice does not apply to Pixel phones generally.
Compare the full cost of repair and replacement
Before deciding, gather the repair quote and a realistic replacement comparison. Include:
- Battery, screen, port, or other repair costs, including inspection, tax, and service-provider differences.
- How long security support is expected to continue on the current and replacement phones.
- The replacement’s actual price and storage configuration—not just the cheapest phone or advertised installment.
- Trade-in or resale value, which depends on model, condition, and current offers and may change after inspection.
- Warranty or protection-plan coverage and any carrier financing still owed.
- Setup time, data transfer, accessories, activation, and the inconvenience of a repair or temporary replacement.
- Whether the new phone meaningfully improves the thing that is failing: battery runtime, storage, camera, network reliability, performance, or support.
For carrier promotions, compare the total financing obligation, required plan or new line, trade-in condition, and commitment—not just the monthly headline. A refurbished phone can be a reasonable alternative, but verify battery condition or replacement policy, remaining support, U.S. carrier compatibility, return window, warranty, storage, activation-lock status, and repair history.
Quick Recap
If you decide to replace it
- Back up the old phone. Confirm that photos, messages, contacts, files, and settings are backed up and accessible.
- Transfer accounts before wiping. Move authenticator apps, passkeys, password-manager access, banking credentials, and recovery methods. Make sure you can sign in on the new device.
- Move your number. Follow your carrier’s instructions for transferring an eSIM or moving a physical SIM; do not assume an eSIM moves automatically.
- Check the new phone. Confirm that calls, messages, contacts, photos, essential apps, and account recovery work before erasing the old one.
- Remove account and device locks as required. Follow the manufacturer’s trade-in or recycling instructions, including disabling Find My or relevant Android account protection where requested.
- Erase the old device only after verifying the transfer. Use the built-in factory-reset process and remove any removable SIM or memory card.
- Trade in, sell, or recycle responsibly. Apple offers estimates online and in store; its estimate may change after inspection, and the device generally must arrive within 14 days of receiving the new one to preserve the estimated value. Devices that do not qualify for credit can be recycled free through Apple. See the current Apple Trade In terms; other manufacturers and carriers have their own current conditions.
