ChatGPT does not automatically make people less intelligent. The risk is subtler: when it performs the mental work that builds memory, judgment, confidence and voice, we may keep the finished answer while losing some ability to produce or assess one ourselves. The outcome depends on what is delegated, whether the user can check the result, and whether the task is meant to deliver a product or develop a capability.

“Thinking for us” is more than generating text

ChatGPT produces language and reasoning-like outputs; it does not own our goals or consequences. But accepting an answer too early can displace several human activities at once:

  • Retrieval: recalling facts, definitions and examples.
  • Generation: producing ideas, hypotheses, prose, plans or code.
  • Comprehension: building a mental model of how something works.
  • Evaluation: testing accuracy, relevance, bias and evidence.
  • Synthesis: combining sources into an original judgment.
  • Metacognition: knowing what we understand and what remains unclear.
  • Decision-making: choosing under uncertainty and accepting responsibility.
  • Expression: turning our own thought into language.

A chatbot can assist with any of these. It becomes a substitute when the user accepts a plausible, complete response before doing the part of the task that matters.

Performance is not the same as learning

A polished essay, solved problem or quick recommendation shows that a task was completed. It does not prove that the user acquired the underlying skill. The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 warns that general-purpose AI can raise task performance without producing equivalent learning when it is used without pedagogical guidance. In practice, a student may submit better work yet perform poorly when the tool is unavailable.

This difference is easiest to see in three levels of knowledge:

  • Recognition: an explanation looks familiar when we see it.
  • Recall: we can produce the idea without assistance.
  • Transfer: we can apply it to a new problem.

Answer-first use often maximizes recognition. Durable competence requires recall and transfer.

Cognitive offloading: useful tool or harmful substitute?

Cognitive offloading means moving mental work to an external aid. Notes, maps, calculators, spreadsheets and search engines all do this. Offloading is not inherently harmful: it can remove tedious work and free attention for better reasoning.

The important distinction is between:

  • Strategic offloading: delegating formatting, transcription or routine calculation while retaining the reasoning that matters.
  • Substitutive offloading: delegating the very activity through which we would learn, form a judgment or develop a voice.

Conversational AI is unusually powerful because it can frame a problem, propose evidence, generate an answer and explain it in one interaction. That convenience can remove the productive friction that reveals what we do and do not understand. Microsoft’s Tools for Thought work describes the design challenge as supporting critical thinking and metacognition rather than merely obeying requests.

What can be lost when the delegation is substitutive?

Memory and transfer

Constructing an explanation, retrieving a fact and solving an example create retrieval paths. Reading an AI summary may feel efficient but leave weaker recall. Asking for a completed homework solution removes practice with the steps needed for transfer.

Critical-thinking practice

The concern is not necessarily that an innate faculty disappears. It is that users exercise it less. A 2025 Microsoft Research survey of 319 knowledge workers, based on 936 reported examples of AI-assisted work, found that people described critical thinking as setting goals, refining prompts, checking outputs, integrating responses and supervising the task. Higher confidence in the AI was associated with less reported critical-thinking effort, while higher confidence in one’s own abilities was associated with more. The study was self-reported and not a long-term experiment, so it cannot establish permanent decline. See the full study.

Metacognition

Struggle supplies diagnostic information: where did I get stuck, which assumption failed and can I reproduce the answer? If ChatGPT solves the problem immediately, those signals are weaker. The OECD identifies this disengagement as a central risk of unguided AI use.

Epistemic agency

Epistemic agency is the ability to decide what is true, uncertain and sufficiently supported. Fluent answers can create premature closure: “Which response sounds finished?” replaces “What do I think, and what evidence would change my mind?” This is especially risky when the user lacks the background needed to spot a subtle error.

Originality, voice and diversity

AI can produce many ideas quickly, but accepting default suggestions may make individual writing sound less distinctive. If everyone begins with similar generated patterns, individual productivity can rise while collective originality narrows. This remains an open research and design question, not a proven universal effect; Microsoft’s New Future of Work publications identify diversity of thought as an active area of study.

Persistence and failure resilience

Working through ambiguity and failed attempts builds patience, decomposition skills and error recognition. A person who routinely outsources first drafts, diagnoses and solutions may be less prepared when the model is unavailable, the data are novel or the output is confidently wrong. This is a plausible mechanism rather than proof that every user will deskill.

Ownership

“Better writing” can mean cleaner grammar, stronger structure or more accurate expression of a person’s own thought. When a model writes a personal statement, argument, apology or creative passage, fluency may increase while authorship and accountability become less clear.

What the evidence says—and does not say

ChatGPT’s scale makes this more than a hypothetical concern. It launched publicly on November 30, 2022. An OpenAI usage paper dated September 15, 2025 reported more than 700 million weekly active consumer-plan users by July 2025—nearly 10% of the world’s adult population. Its analysis covered Free, Plus and Pro consumer plans, excluding Business, Enterprise and Education users. In the classified sample, non-work use rose from 53% in June 2024 to 73% in June 2025, while Practical Guidance, Seeking Information and Writing together represented nearly 80% of conversations. These are OpenAI’s own usage estimates, not a neutral industry census; see the paper and its sampling notes.

The Microsoft survey indicates an association between confidence in AI and lower reported effort, not causation or neurological damage. The OECD synthesis supports a conditional conclusion: unguided substitution can produce metacognitive laziness and weaker skill acquisition, while structured use can support learning, argumentation, creativity and collaboration. Strong claims that ChatGPT permanently damages intelligence, memory or the brain are not established by this evidence.

What we can gain when AI augments thinking

Used deliberately, ChatGPT can reduce mechanical workload, explain an idea in several ways, provide feedback, support brainstorming, help across language barriers, improve accessibility and make tutoring more available. It can act as a tutor, critic, Socratic questioner, translator or simulator rather than an answer dispenser.

OpenAI’s Study Mode is designed around step-by-step guidance, guiding questions, knowledge checks, reflection and feedback. OpenAI describes it as an early product intervention that can behave inconsistently and make mistakes; its design intent is not independent evidence of durable learning gains.

Use the replace-or-augment test

  1. Is the goal a product or a capability? Formatting an email is a product task; learning a concept or forming judgment is a capability task.
  2. Will you need to perform unaided later? If yes, make a first attempt before asking for help.
  3. Can you evaluate the output independently? If not, request explanations and questions, not authoritative conclusions.
  4. What is the cost of being wrong? Medical, legal, financial, safety and source-based decisions require primary sources and qualified professionals.
  5. Does the struggle have value? In learning, creative development and judgment formation, it often does.
  6. Can you reverse the delegation? Ask for a hint, critique, rubric or counterargument instead of a completed answer.

Workflows that preserve the mental reps

Learning

  1. Attempt the problem first.
  2. Ask for a hint or question, not the solution.
  3. Explain your reasoning in your own words.
  4. Ask the model to identify the weakest step.
  5. Solve a similar problem without assistance.
  6. Use delayed, closed-book recall and verify important facts against course materials or primary sources.

Writing

  1. Draft your thesis or outline yourself.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to challenge assumptions and identify gaps.
  3. Keep the argument, evidence and final examples under your control.
  4. Compare the edited version with your draft to detect changes in meaning.
  5. Preserve distinctive phrasing where authenticity matters.

Research and decisions

  1. State a specific question, constraints and provisional view.
  2. Gather primary sources independently.
  3. Use AI to organize, compare options and generate counterarguments.
  4. Check every citation, quotation and factual premise.
  5. Record which conclusions came from evidence and which came from AI suggestion, then make and document the decision yourself.

Where caution matters most

  • Generally lower risk: formatting, transcription, routine summaries after reading the original, grammar correction, boilerplate restructuring and repetitive transformations.
  • Higher risk: foundational learning, medical/legal/financial advice, scholarship, hiring judgments, safety procedures, political or scientific claims, novel technical problems and personal or emotionally consequential messages.
  • Novices: may gain from scaffolding but are less able to detect errors.
  • Experts: often have stronger internal checks, but confidence can still produce automation bias.
  • Accessibility and language learning: AI can expand participation; excessive editing can conceal actual proficiency.
  • Time pressure: a fast imperfect answer may be rational, but note when verification was sacrificed.

Human thinking is not automatically superior: people are biased, forgetful and slow. The goal is accountable collaboration, not zero automation. Protect the repetitions that create competence, and automate outputs only when doing so does not remove the judgment you will later need.
