Google announced Google Play on March 6, 2012, replacing the Android Market name with a broader digital store for apps, music, movies and books. The change also brought Google Music and the Google eBookstore under the same umbrella, while users kept access to existing purchases through the Google account they already used.
Why Google replaced the Android Market name
Android Market presented itself primarily as a place to get Android apps. Google Play was meant to describe a wider service: one cloud-based destination for apps and entertainment that people could reach on the web and on Android phones and tablets.
Google said the change would reduce the hassle of moving files and syncing content between devices. In the launch announcement, Google’s Director of Digital Content Jamie Rosenberg described Play as a place to “find, enjoy and share” music, movies, books and apps. The idea was that content tied to a Google account would remain available without manual transfers.
What changed for Android Market users
The store app became Google Play Store
The Android Market app was upgraded to Google Play Store over the days following the announcement. This was a rebrand and service expansion, not a separate store users had to discover and install from scratch.

Google’s media services joined the umbrella
Google said its video, book and music apps would be upgraded to Google Play Movies, Google Play Books and Google Play Music in countries where the corresponding services were available. The former Google eBookstore and Google Music became part of the broader Play brand.
Existing purchases stayed with the account
Users could continue accessing previously purchased music, movies, books and apps by signing in with the same Google account. The announcement described continuity of access; it did not mean every type of media was available in every country.

What Google Play included at launch
Google’s March 2012 announcement promoted a mix of digital content. Its catalog figures are historical launch claims, not current Google Play totals.

The service’s scope was not identical everywhere. At launch, Google listed music, movies, books and Android apps in the United States; movies, books and apps in Canada and the United Kingdom; books and apps in Australia; and movies and apps in Japan. What Google’s first Play promotion offered
To mark the launch, Google ran a one-week “7 Days to Play” promotion, featuring a different discounted album, book, video rental and Android app each day. In the United States, first-day examples cost 25 cents each: the album Now That’s What I Call Music 41, the game Where’s My Water, the novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and the movie Puncture. Those were launch-week promotional prices, not regular prices.

Google’s September 26, 2012 milestone post reported 675,000 apps and games and 25 billion downloads. Those later figures show the scale Google reported about six months after the rebrand; they should not be confused with the more than 450,000 apps and games cited at launch or with present-day totals.
