WhatsApp announced Writing Help on August 27, 2025, as an optional tool for rewriting and polishing message drafts. In a March 26, 2026 update, it added suggested replies based on conversations—a distinct feature that uses chat context. WhatsApp says both are powered by Private Processing, but does not describe the original feature as on-device or offline AI.
What WhatsApp Writing Help does
Writing Help is an AI assistant built into WhatsApp’s message composer. It can help clarify a draft, correct errors, or shift its tone. It is not an autonomous chatbot: you review a suggestion and decide whether to use, edit, or ignore it. WhatsApp says it works in individual and group chats. WhatsApp’s launch announcement highlighted professional, funny, and supportive styles. Contemporaneous coverage also reported Rephrase and Proofread options; the exact menu may vary as the feature rolls out.

These are tone targets, not guarantees. A rewrite can change your meaning or make a personal message sound generic, so check it before sending.

- Open an individual or group chat and type a draft.
- Look for the pencil icon in or near the composer and tap it.
- Choose a style or rewrite option, if available.
- Review the suggestions, then insert one, edit it, or keep your original draft.
- Check the final wording and send it only if it says what you mean.
The pencil’s exact location can vary by device, app version, and interface. Reports have described it near the sticker control, but that is not a universal path.
What “private” means—and what it doesn’t
WhatsApp says Writing Help uses its Private Processing system and that Meta and WhatsApp cannot read your draft or the suggested rewrites. The feature is optional and off by default, according to the company. WhatsApp points to an engineering blog, technical white paper, and independent audit reports from NCC Group and Trail of Bits.
Those are WhatsApp’s claims about its system, not a reason to assume that processing happens entirely on your phone, works offline, or is simply end-to-end encrypted AI. “Private” also is not the same as “no processing.” If a message contains a password, financial details, identity documents, or other information you would not want submitted for processing, the cautious choice is not to use an AI rewrite.

Draft rewriting versus conversation-based replies
The original Writing Help feature was described as working on the draft in the composer rather than scanning the whole conversation. That description should not be applied to every later Writing Help function: in a March 26, 2026 update, WhatsApp said the feature could also generate a suggested response based on a conversation.
Rewriting a message you have already composed and generating a reply from chat context are different tasks. The later capability has to draw on conversation context to make a suggestion. WhatsApp’s announcement identifies the feature as conversation-based, but readers should not infer that the original draft-polishing mode and the newer reply suggestion have identical inputs or behavior.
When it helps—and when to be careful
Writing Help can be handy when you have a clear point but want to make a request less blunt, tidy up a work message, catch a typo, or make a supportive note warmer. It may also help if you are writing in a second language. Its convenience is the main draw: you can revise without switching to another app.
Use more care with apologies, relationship conflicts, workplace disputes, medical or financial matters, and legal issues. A “funny” rewrite may land badly; a “professional” one may sound cold; and a “supportive” one may overstate your feelings. For any sensitive or consequential message, compare the suggestion with your draft and restore details or phrasing that matter.

- Verify names, dates, times, numbers, and places.
- Check negations such as “don’t,” “can’t,” and “won’t.”
- Make sure a possibility has not become a promise, or a question an admission.
- Check whether the rewrite changes your certainty or emotional intensity.
- Replace formulaic wording with your own voice where needed.
In the experience described by contemporaneous coverage, the recipient is not shown a visible label saying Writing Help was used. That only describes what the recipient sees; it does not establish anything about internal system handling or settle whether you personally want to disclose AI assistance.

At launch, WhatsApp began rolling out Writing Help in English in the United States and selected other countries, with more languages and regions planned. Availability is not established for every country, language, account, device, or app version, so the feature may not appear for everyone. The available announcements do not provide a complete current country or device-version matrix.
If you do not see the pencil:
- Update WhatsApp from your device’s official app store, or use WhatsApp’s official download page.
- Try a typed draft in a standard individual or group chat.
- If a Private Processing option appears in your settings, check whether it is enabled. Menu paths can differ by build; a reported Chats > Private Processing path should not be treated as universal.
- Restart WhatsApp and check again.
- Consider whether the rollout covers your account, language, region, and platform yet.
Do not install unofficial modified WhatsApp builds to get the feature. A missing icon does not by itself mean your account is broken.
Is it worth using?
For occasional, low-stakes rewrites, Writing Help is a convenient built-in option. Use it as an editor, not an authority: accept only wording that preserves your intent, and write sensitive messages yourself unless you are comfortable with the feature’s stated processing model. If you need broader assistance across apps or longer drafting, a separate writing assistant may suit you better, but it is not required to use WhatsApp.
