To make a WhatsApp link-preview image, create a 1200×630-pixel (1.91:1) card, host it at a publicly reachable HTTPS URL, and place an absolute og:image URL in the page’s initial HTML. Add og:title, og:description and og:url, then inspect the rendered preview before sharing. Keeping the image near 300 KB or smaller, protecting a safe margin around text and logos, and avoiding JavaScript-only metadata prevents most missing or badly cropped previews.
What a WhatsApp Open Graph image generator does
A WhatsApp Open Graph (OG) image generator creates the branded thumbnail shown when someone shares a web-page link. Design at the full 1200×630 canvas, but keep a generous inner safe area. WhatsApp and other clients can crop or scale the card, and the available preview space varies by device. Keep logos, headlines and essential numbers away from every edge. Use high-contrast type large enough to remain legible after reduction.

How to generate the card and metadata
1. Pick a creation method
- Static design: OpenGraph Studio provides browser-based crop, compression, WhatsApp preview and tag copying without requiring signup (OpenGraph Studio).
- Template cards: BetterImage describes a repeatable template workflow that exports a 1200×630 PNG for WhatsApp (BetterImage).
- Metadata preview and debugging: OpenGraph.dev previews cards and generates OG tags (OpenGraph.dev).
- Dynamic rendering: HTML/CSS to Image renders OG images from templates and data, useful when every article needs a different title or price (HTML/CSS to Image).
These approaches differ in where rendering happens and how much automation you need. A browser editor is convenient for one-off cards and can keep source images on your device. A server-rendered template is better when your CMS must produce thousands of unique cards, but it adds a rendering endpoint and caching considerations.
2. Build a readable 1200×630 design
- Start with a 1200×630 document (1.91:1).
- Place the page title or campaign message inside an inset safe margin; avoid tiny text and edge-aligned logos.
- Use one clear visual hierarchy: brand, short headline and optional supporting line. Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning.
- Export JPEG, PNG or WebP, then compress until the file is near or below 300 KB without making type visibly soft.
- Open the exported file at reduced size. If the title cannot be read in a small preview, simplify the card rather than adding detail.
3. Add the tags to the initial HTML
Put the tags inside the page’s <head> in the HTML returned for the first request. WhatsApp can miss metadata inserted only after client-side JavaScript runs. A minimal example is:

</head>Use the canonical page URL in og:url. Ensure the image URL is absolute, uses HTTPS, does not require a login, and returns the image itself rather than an HTML error page. Keep title and description aligned with the visible page so the preview is not misleading.

4. Publish, preview and correct
- Upload the image to a stable public URL.
- View the raw HTML source and confirm all four properties are present before any application scripts.
- Paste the page URL into a preview or debugger such as OpenGraph.dev; inspect the crop, title, description and fetched image.
- Send the link to a WhatsApp chat where you can verify the actual card. OpenGraph Studio documents a crop, compression and WhatsApp-preview workflow (details).
- If you change the image or tags, republish the page and test again. Previously fetched previews can remain visible until WhatsApp crawls the URL again, so test with a controlled URL or a materially changed page when diagnosing cache behavior.
Why a WhatsApp preview image is missing
The image URL is not fetchable
Check for a typo, an HTTP URL, a private bucket, authentication, hotlink protection or a redirect chain that ends in an error. Request the image URL without a browser session and verify that it returns the binary image with a successful response.

The file is too large
Re-export at the same 1200×630 dimensions with stronger JPEG/WebP compression or a simpler PNG. The December 2025 OG Preview guide identifies 300 KB as the relevant maximum in its WhatsApp specification (guide).
Tags are injected after load
Move the four properties into server-rendered HTML. A browser may show a finished page while a crawler that does not execute your app’s JavaScript sees no og:image.

The card is cropped or unreadable
Return to the 1.91:1 canvas, enlarge the headline, and move key elements inward. Inspect both the source image and the small WhatsApp rendering; do not assume the full desktop image will be shown.
The page or image is blocked
Bot protection, robots or request filtering can prevent retrieval. Test from outside your logged-in network and review server logs for the crawler request. A blank response, timeout or HTML error document cannot become a thumbnail.
