Yes—WhatsApp has introduced Message Summaries, an optional Meta AI feature that gives you a short overview of unread messages in a chat. You request the summary yourself; it is not generated for every conversation automatically. WhatsApp says the feature uses its Private Processing system so Meta and WhatsApp cannot access the messages or the resulting summary, although the selected content is still processed by a remote AI service.
What WhatsApp Message Summaries does
Message Summaries is designed for catching up when a conversation has accumulated unread messages. Inside a chat, WhatsApp can create a brief description of what has happened while you were away, helping you decide whether you need to read the entire thread immediately.

It works on unread messages in the chat where you start the request. It does not continuously summarize your account or automatically process every WhatsApp conversation. Typical uses include catching up on a busy group chat, checking a work discussion after a day away, following family or travel planning, and triaging messages before responding.
WhatsApp describes the result as an idea of what is happening, not a replacement for the original conversation. The feature was announced on June 25, 2025, and the announcement page was updated October 13, 2025. WhatsApp’s announcement identifies Meta AI as the system that performs the summarization.

How to request a private summary
- Open a WhatsApp chat containing unread messages.
- Tap the unread-message count or the control beside it.
- Select Summarize privately, if that label is shown.
- Wait for WhatsApp to generate the overview.
- Read the original messages before acting on important details.
The exact wording and location can differ by app version and platform. A reported settings location for the underlying capability is Settings → Chats → Private Processing. Treat that path as a guide rather than a guarantee that every installation uses the same labels.
If “Summarize privately” is missing
- Update WhatsApp through your phone’s official app store.
- Check whether your account, language and market are included in the staged rollout.
- Look under Settings → Chats for Private Processing or related AI controls.
- Review Advanced Chat Privacy; it can prevent AI features for selected chats.
- Try a chat with a substantial unread backlog, including an individual or group conversation.
- Restart WhatsApp after updating.
WhatsApp says Message Summaries began rolling out in select markets and languages. There is no confirmed universal list of supported countries, languages, minimum app versions or Android-versus-iPhone differences in the published material, so availability can vary by account and rollout status. Launch coverage reported an initial U.S. English rollout, but that should not be treated as the current worldwide availability list. Contemporary launch coverage provides that initial context.
What “private” means here
For a summary to be produced, the selected unread messages have to be processed by an AI system. The technically accurate claim is not that AI never sees the messages. Rather, WhatsApp and Meta say the messages and generated summary are handled inside a confidential environment that prevents them from accessing the content.

Safeguards Meta describes
- End-to-end encrypted communication between the device and the Private Processing application.
- Remote attestation, which lets a device verify that it is communicating with approved software.
- Anonymous credentials and routing through a third-party relay, including OHTTP techniques, to reduce the ability to link a request with a user’s IP address.
- Stateless processing: Meta says messages are not stored to disk or external storage and that the service does not retain access after the session ends.

Who can see the summary?

These privacy statements are claims about Meta’s architecture and implementation, supported by its published technical documentation. They are not a promise that a complex computing system is impossible to compromise.

There is no useful one-word answer. Ordinary WhatsApp delivery remains protected by end-to-end encryption between chat participants. Message Summaries is a separate, user-triggered workflow: selected content is sent in encrypted form to Private Processing so server-side AI can operate on it.
Meta says the confidential-computing design is intended to provide comparable privacy when on-device processing is insufficient. That is not literally the same mechanism as keeping all processing on your phone, and it introduces dependencies on TEEs, attestation, software supply chains, hardware security and relay infrastructure.

Meta’s own threat model discusses possible zero-day bugs, prompt-injection attacks, TEE vulnerabilities, physical attacks and supply-chain risks. Private Processing should therefore be understood as a security architecture with stated protections, not mathematical proof that compromise can never occur.
Controls you have
Message Summaries is off by default. You must initiate each request, and the result is private to you. WhatsApp also provides Advanced Chat Privacy controls that can prevent selected chats from being used for AI features. That is useful for conversations containing information you do not want submitted to any remote AI-processing workflow.
How reliable is the result?
No independent accuracy benchmark or error rate is established in the cited material. A short AI overview can omit context, qualifications, sarcasm, jokes or minority opinions. It can also confuse names, dates, amounts, instructions or who agreed to do what.

Images, voice notes, documents, links, reactions and edited messages may not be represented fully. A disagreement can be flattened into a seemingly settled conclusion.
Read the original messages first when
- A work decision involves specific commitments or deadlines.
- The conversation concerns medical, legal, financial or safety matters.
- You are handling a dispute where wording and chronology matter.
- The thread is dominated by media, files, links or voice notes.
- Missing one detail could cause harm, loss or embarrassment.
Should you enable it?
Message Summaries is most useful as a fast triage tool for an overflowing chat. Enable it if that convenience is worth allowing selected messages to undergo confidential server-side processing. Leave it disabled for especially sensitive conversations, and use Advanced Chat Privacy where appropriate. In every case, treat the overview as a lead-in to the conversation—not as an authoritative record of what people said.
