WhatsApp lets Android users search for an unsaved phone number from the New chat screen and start a conversation without adding that number to their contacts. The number must be linked to an active WhatsApp account, and labels can vary by app version and account.
What changed in WhatsApp
Previously, messaging an unfamiliar number on WhatsApp usually meant saving it to the Android Contacts app first. Alternatives included using a wa.me link or a third-party click-to-chat app.
The in-app search option moves that process into WhatsApp. It is useful for one-time conversations with delivery drivers, repair services, marketplace sellers, contractors, customer-support numbers, or temporary work contacts.

The original reports described labels such as New chat, Not in your contacts, and Chat. The exact wording or layout may differ in a current WhatsApp build.

Android Authority reported the in-app unknown-number chat rollout in July 2023, while Gadgets 360 documented the Android steps.
How to start a WhatsApp chat without saving the number
- Update WhatsApp. Open Google Play, search for WhatsApp, and tap Update if one is available. You can also check the official WhatsApp download page.
- Open WhatsApp and stay on the Chats tab.
- Tap the floating New chat or compose button.
- Tap the search field and enter the person’s complete phone number.
- Use the number’s international format, including the country code.
- Look for a result under Not in your contacts, or a similarly named section.
- Tap Chat beside the number.
- Type and send your message normally.
If the chat opens and the conversation displays the phone number instead of a saved contact name, you have started the chat without creating an Android contact entry.
How to format the number
Include the country code, regional or area code where applicable, and subscriber number. If the search does not work, re-enter the number as a continuous international number without spaces, hyphens, parentheses, or other punctuation.

For example, a clearly fictional U.S. number could be entered as 12025550184: country code 1 followed by the 10-digit number. Do not use a local dialing format when contacting a number in another country.
The in-app search may accept some formatting variations, so punctuation is not necessarily rejected in every version. However, a clean international format is the most useful troubleshooting starting point. The same formatting convention is used for wa.me click-to-chat links.
What if the number does not appear?
WhatsApp cannot start a chat with every arbitrary phone number. The number must be registered to an active WhatsApp account. A missing result can also indicate an incorrect country code, invalid formatting, an outdated app, or differences in the current interface or rollout.

Try these steps in order:
- Check the country code and all remaining digits.
- Re-enter the number without punctuation.
- Search from New chat, not only from the general Chats search field.
- Update WhatsApp through Google Play.
- Close and reopen WhatsApp, then try again.
- Ask the recipient to send you a WhatsApp message first or provide a direct WhatsApp link.
- Use the official
wa.memethod as a fallback.
If WhatsApp says the number is not registered, the person must create a WhatsApp account or give you another WhatsApp-enabled number before you can message them there.

Using a wa.me link instead
When in-app number search is unavailable or inconvenient, open a browser and use this format:
https://wa.me/COUNTRYCODENUMBERReplace the placeholder with the full international number and omit the plus sign, spaces, dashes, and parentheses. For example:

https://wa.me/12025550184If the number is registered and WhatsApp is installed, the link can open a conversation. Android Authority explains the click-to-chat format and its limitations.
Third-party Android apps can automate this process, but they are generally unnecessary when WhatsApp’s built-in search works. Such apps may contain advertising, request additional permissions, handle entered numbers through their own systems, or become poorly maintained. Review a current app’s developer, permissions, update history, and privacy policy before installing it.
Not saving the number is not the same as anonymous messaging
This feature only prevents a contact record from being created in your phone book. It does not hide your identity or guarantee a private conversation.

The recipient may see profile information allowed by your WhatsApp privacy settings, including your profile photo, About text, last seen or online status, Status updates, and read receipts where applicable. Review WhatsApp’s privacy controls if you do not want unfamiliar contacts to see more information than necessary.
Use normal caution with unknown conversations. Do not share verification codes, payment details, passwords, or sensitive personal information, and avoid suspicious links. If a conversation is unwanted, use WhatsApp’s block and report controls.
Can you save the number later?
Yes. Starting the chat without saving the number is reversible. Open the conversation’s contact information and add the number, or create a new entry through Android Contacts, if the person becomes a regular contact.

Availability on Android
The underlying feature was reported in July 2023 and was described as available on both Android and iOS. There is no basis here to call it a new 2026 release or to guarantee identical availability for every Android phone, WhatsApp build, or account.
If you do not see the expected controls, update WhatsApp from Google Play, reopen the app, and retry the New chat search. The label may be different even when the same function is available.
