WhatsApp Custom Lists already let some users filter chats, but the newer changes are not one single update: WhatsApp is also refining how chat lists are managed and testing reusable audiences for Status posts. Those newer features are rolling out or being tested in stages, and WhatsApp has not announced a global release date.
WhatsApp has more than one kind of Custom List
The phrase “Custom Lists” can refer to separate features. Chat lists help organize existing conversations; Status audience lists are intended to choose who can see a Status update. Neither is a tool for sending a message to a group of recipients.

What existing chat Custom Lists do
A chat list is a saved view of conversations you choose, such as work chats, family chats, or a group of classmates. Selecting a list helps you find those chats without scrolling through the whole Chats view. It filters the inbox; it does not move conversations into a separate storage area or change how they behave.

- It does not automatically mute, archive, lock, or pin its chats.
- It does not change notification settings or send a message to everyone in the list.
WhatsApp announced chat Custom Lists in October 2024, but the original feature’s availability has depended on rollout. The rollout report describes lists created from the chat-list interface by selecting contacts or groups.

How to find or create a chat list
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
- Look near the top of the chat view for list or filter controls.
- Choose an existing list, or use the create-list option if it appears.
- Select the chats and groups to include, then save the list.
- Return to the Chats view and select the list to filter conversations.
Button names and positions can differ by platform and app version. This is a general guide to the reported interface, not a universal menu path.
What is changing in chat-list management?
Reports describe a redesigned system intended to make lists easier to find and manage. Secondary lists may move into a dedicated menu, with more control over which lists remain visible and easier access to preset categories. The precise layout and availability can change as WhatsApp tests it.

WABetaInfo associated Android development with beta version 2.26.18.4 and reported the redesigned iOS interface rolling out to some accounts on version 26.21.74. These are builds cited in the reports, not minimum requirements or a guarantee that the feature will appear for everyone using them. Android report; iOS report

Potential preset filters include unread chats, groups, communities, favorites, archived chats, and locked chats. How Status Custom Lists are different
Status Custom Lists are intended to save a selected audience so you can use it again when sharing Status updates. You might make separate audiences for close friends, family, or colleagues. These lists control visibility of Status content; they do not create a shared chat or alter the underlying contact relationship.
WhatsApp already offers an audience selector for individual Status posts. Meta says the most recent audience selection can be saved as the default for the next Status post. That existing convenience is not the same as named, reusable custom audience lists. Meta’s announcement of Status features

Reports describe named, reusable audiences as a feature in development and, later, a rollout to some Android and iOS beta users. A likely workflow is to open the Status or Updates area, start a post, open the audience selector, choose or create an audience, select contacts, and save it. That workflow is based on reported development, so labels and steps may change before any wider release. Status privacy development report; Android beta report
WABetaInfo associated Status audience testing with Android beta 2.26.12.9, and a later report cited iOS beta 26.19.10.72 and Android beta 2.26.19.11 for a rollout to some users. Availability: what users can expect
- Chat Custom Lists: introduced in 2024 and available to some or many users, but not necessarily on every account.
- Redesigned chat-list manager: reported as rolling out to some iOS accounts; Android development was reported, but not as available for beta testing in the cited report.
- Status Custom Lists: reported in development and available to some beta users, depending on platform and account.
- Archived and locked chat filters: reported under development.
- Global launch date: not officially confirmed.
These reports are not equivalent to a Meta announcement that a feature is available everywhere. Meta’s public WhatsApp update announcements cover other product changes but do not provide a firm global launch date for the redesigned chat-list system or reusable Status audiences. Why the option may not appear
WhatsApp can enable features gradually, and rollout may depend on an account as well as the platform and app build. A newer app version can be necessary without being sufficient; joining a beta does not guarantee that a particular test has been enabled for your account.
- Update WhatsApp through the official App Store or Google Play listing.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then check the Chats tab for chat-list controls or Updates/Status for audience controls.
- If the option is still missing, your account may not be included in the staged rollout.
- Do not install unofficial modified WhatsApp clients to try to unlock a feature; they are unnecessary and may create privacy, security, or account-access risks.
Custom Lists versus broadcasts, groups, and Communities

Privacy checks for Status audiences
A Status audience is a visibility choice, so check the selected audience before posting rather than relying on a list name alone. If your contacts change, review the membership of a saved audience before using it again. Meta says personal Status updates are end-to-end encrypted; that statement concerns the existing Status system and should not be taken as confirmation of every detail of a feature still being tested.
