WordPress 6.5, released on April 2, 2024, added a Font Library for block themes, improved Site Editor workflows, expanded style revisions, and introduced developer APIs for interactive and data-connected blocks. It also brought plugin dependency declarations and project-reported performance and accessibility improvements. Some features previewed during beta—most notably synced-pattern content overrides—did not ship in 6.5.

What changed for typography and design?

Font Library

The Font Library lets users of block themes manage fonts across a site, including installing, removing, and activating local and Google Fonts. Custom typography collections can add further font choices. The release announcement described it as a way to manage site typography without coding or extra steps: WordPress 6.5 release announcement.

More design controls

The Site Editor added background-image controls for sizing, repeat, and focal point, along with expanded shadow support. These options give editors more control over the appearance of their designs.

How did the Site Editor and content workflows improve?

Data Views

Data Views provide table and grid presentations for pages, templates, patterns, and template parts. Editors can configure which fields appear and make bulk changes, offering a more flexible way to manage site content and structure. See the WordPress 6.5 version documentation.

Editing refinements

WordPress 6.5 refined link controls and drag-and-drop interactions in the editor.

Style revisions

Style revisions now include timestamps, summaries, and paginated history, with access to the Style Book. Revision history also extends to templates and template parts. The release announcement describes these revisions as a way to review and restore earlier design decisions: WordPress 6.5 release announcement.

What matters to WordPress developers?

Interactivity API

The Interactivity API provides a standardized foundation for interactive front-end experiences in blocks. It gives developers a shared approach to implementing interactions rather than requiring each block to invent its own system. Matt Mullenweg’s release announcement says it “opens up a world of creative front-end possibilities.”

Block Bindings API

The Block Bindings API lets developers connect attributes of core blocks to custom fields or other dynamic data. This can make block content reflect data sources without requiring a wholly custom block for every use case.

Plugin dependencies

Plugin authors can declare required plugins using a Requires Plugins header containing the required plugin slugs. This gives WordPress a way to identify dependencies specified by a plugin.

What performance and accessibility improvements were reported?

WordPress.org reported more than 110 performance updates for the release. Its comparisons with WordPress 6.4 say the editor loads over two times faster and input processing is up to five times faster. For translated sites, WordPress.org reported load-time improvements of up to 25%.

These are release-level project comparisons, not guaranteed results for every site. Hosting, themes, plugins, and site configuration can affect real-world performance; the cited figures should be read as reported comparisons and maximums, not promises. The release documentation also cites more than 65 accessibility improvements, including changes across the editing experience.

What planned feature did not ship in WordPress 6.5?

Synced-pattern content overrides for Paragraph, Image, Heading, and Button blocks were proposed during beta but postponed. They should not be counted among WordPress 6.5’s shipped features. The beta update explicitly corrected the earlier plan: WordPress 6.5 Beta 3 announcement.
