ili was a neck-worn voice translator developed by Logbar and unveiled at CES 2016. Its pitch was simple: press a button, speak a short phrase, and hear it spoken in another language—without Wi-Fi. Contemporary coverage reported support for English, Chinese and Japanese, but ili’s long-term availability and support today are unverified. Logbar’s “first” claim is best understood as promotional language, not a proven fact about the entire history of translation devices.
What was ili?
Logbar designed ili as a dedicated wearable for travelers, worn around the neck rather than used as a phone app or earbud. The company had also been associated with the Ring ZERO wearable project. ili aimed to make short exchanges easier without requiring a traveler to take out a phone or connect to a network.
The original CES-era coverage described a built-in translation engine, a speech-synthesis chipset and a travel-oriented lexicon. Those descriptions explain the product’s intended approach; they do not establish independently tested accuracy or a complete list of situations it could handle. Futurism’s contemporaneous report was updated June 21, 2017, so its claims describe the product as announced then, not its status in 2026.

How was ili supposed to work?
- Press the device’s button.
- Speak the phrase you want translated.
- Allow the device to process the speech.
- Listen to the translated phrase spoken aloud.
That is push-to-talk, phrase-by-phrase translation. It is not evidence of seamless simultaneous interpretation, automatic speaker detection or continuous translation of a conversation. In practice, each person would need to allow time for a phrase to be spoken, processed and played back, which can interrupt natural turn-taking.

Which languages and connectivity did it promise?
At unveiling, contemporary coverage reported English, Chinese and Japanese. French, Thai and Korean were described as planned additions, followed later by Spanish, Italian and Arabic. Those were future intentions, not confirmed shipping support; the available account does not establish which additions, if any, ultimately reached users.
ili was also advertised as working without Wi-Fi or an internet connection, with translation and speech synthesis handled on the device. That would be useful in places with poor connectivity, but it is an announced capability rather than a separately verified test result. Local processing and a travel-focused phrase library can also mean narrower coverage than a cloud service. No reliable current documentation establishes ili’s exact offline coverage, language-pack updates or accuracy.

Was ili really the world’s first wearable translator?
Logbar presented ili as “the first real-time wearable translator in the world.” The available contemporary account supports calling it an early, notable consumer wearable translation product, but it does not establish that no earlier wearable translation system existed. “First” could mean a particular form factor, product category or trade-show milestone; without a defined category and a comprehensive historical comparison, the absolute claim cannot be verified.
Can you buy or use ili today?
As of August 18, 2026, no current official sales channel, active support documentation or reliable evidence of ongoing commercial availability could be verified. That does not prove ili was discontinued, nor does the CES announcement prove that it shipped widely or remains supported. Treat its current availability and operational status as unverified.

If you find a used unit, do not assume an old listing or promotional video means it will work. Before buying, ask the seller to demonstrate charging and translation in the language pair you need, and confirm whether any language pack, companion software or account is required. Check battery condition, return terms and the availability of firmware or other necessary downloads; those details are not established by the contemporary coverage.
What should travelers consider instead?
The useful comparison today is between device types, not between ili and a supposedly equivalent current product. Choose based on how you travel, whether the device needs a phone or network, and whether the relevant language works offline.

Features, language coverage, offline operation, connectivity and support vary by model; verify them with the manufacturer for the version sold in your region.

A button-driven translator can help with predictable travel exchanges, but translation quality and usability depend on what is said and the conditions in which it is heard. These are general constraints of speech translation, not measured ili test results:
- Vocabulary and meaning: A travel-focused lexicon may not handle slang, idioms, regional dialects, unfamiliar names or specialized instructions reliably.
- Noise and speech: Traffic, crowds, wind, overlapping speakers, quiet speech and unfamiliar accents can make spoken input harder to interpret.
- Conversation flow: Waiting for each phrase to be processed and played back can make interruptions, short acknowledgments and natural back-and-forth awkward.
- Language direction: The available account does not establish whether one ili unit could switch between both directions during an exchange or required users to change modes manually.
- Privacy: On-device processing was part of the offline pitch, but no verified privacy policy or documentation establishes microphone behavior, data retention or telemetry. Offline operation alone does not prove that a device collects no data.
- Ownership details: Reliable current information about battery life, charging, repairs, warranty, firmware, language updates, smartphone requirements or regional restrictions is not established.
Do not use ili—or any consumer translation device—as the sole method for medical emergencies, medication directions, legal or immigration proceedings, contracts, police incidents, financial transactions or safety-critical instructions. Use a qualified human interpreter or professional translation service for those situations.
