India uses 230 volts AC at 50 Hz. Its commonly used plug and socket types are C, D, and M. Most modern phone, laptop, tablet, camera, and USB chargers accept 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz, so travelers usually need only a plug adapter—not a voltage converter.
A converter may be needed for a single-voltage North American appliance marked 110–120 V only. However, wattage and the difference between India’s 50 Hz supply and North America’s 60 Hz supply can still make a hair dryer, motor, clock, or other appliance unsuitable.
India’s voltage, frequency, and plug types

The Bureau of Indian Standards identifies India’s standard supply as 230 V at 50 Hz. Indian electrical installations commonly use Type C, Type D, and Type M plugs and sockets. Some older travel information says “220 V,” but 230 V is the current nominal figure; appliances marked 220–240 V are generally designed for this supply.

Travelers from the United States and Canada should take particular care: those countries commonly use approximately 120 V at 60 Hz. A device designed only for 120 V must not be connected directly to an Indian wall outlet.

What are India’s plug types?
- Type C: Two round pins, commonly called a Europlug.
- Type D: Three round pins arranged in a triangle and widely associated with Indian outlets.
- Type M: A larger three-round-pin design used for higher-current applications. It resembles Type D but is physically larger.
Use an adapter that explicitly supports India, Type D, or Type D/M. A generic “European” adapter may accept Type C but fail to fit Type D or Type M sockets securely.

Do you need a voltage converter in India?
Read the appliance’s input rating. It is usually printed on the charger brick, power supply, appliance handle, underside, or a label near the power cord.

The device itself may run on low-voltage DC, but its wall charger still has to accept India’s AC input. Check the charger—not just the phone, laptop, or camera battery specifications.

Adapter versus converter: what is the difference?

A plug adapter alone cannot protect a 120 V-only appliance. Electrical Safety First also warns that converters and transformers have maximum wattage ratings and that frequency differences can affect normal operation.
Products marketed as travel adapters often include USB ports or multiple international plug settings, but they remain plug adapters unless the product specifically says that it converts voltage. For example, Anker states that its travel adapter is not a voltage converter.
Which devices usually need only a plug adapter?
Many modern electronics use universal-input power supplies. After checking the label, these commonly require only an India-compatible plug adapter:

The typical label is Input: 100–240 V ~ 50/60 Hz. Such a charger can accept India’s nominal voltage without a step-down converter. The adapter still needs to fit the outlet, and its socket and USB outputs must be rated for the connected load.

Which devices may need a converter—or should stay home?
Be especially cautious with appliances that create heat or use motors:
- US-only hair dryers
- US-only curling irons and straighteners
- Older electric shavers
- Fans, pumps, and other motor-driven devices
- Plug-in clocks and mechanical timers
- Some kitchen appliances
- Older audio equipment
- Irons, heaters, and other high-wattage appliances
A step-down converter must be rated above the appliance’s continuous wattage, with a sensible safety margin. A small converter intended for chargers cannot safely power a hair dryer or iron. High-wattage appliances are often better replaced with a dual-voltage travel model.
For example, a converter marketed as 200 W may be suitable for certain low-wattage devices, but many full-size hair dryers and heating appliances draw substantially more than that. A product such as the Ceptics 200 W step-down converter illustrates the category and its limit; it is not a general solution for every 120 V appliance.

Why frequency matters
Voltage and frequency are separate specifications. India supplies 50 Hz, while many North American appliances are designed for 60 Hz.

Frequency differences are most significant for:
- Motors and fans
- Pumps
- Mechanical clocks and timers
- Some audio equipment
- Devices with motor-driven heating or temperature controls
A transformer can reduce voltage while leaving the frequency at 50 Hz. Therefore, converting 230 V to 120 V does not automatically make a 120 V, 60 Hz only appliance safe or accurate. A label showing 50/60 Hz is much more suitable for international use.
What should a US or Canadian traveler pack?
- An India-compatible plug adapter: Choose one that explicitly lists Type D and, preferably, Type M support. Do not rely only on the word “universal.”
- A USB-C charger or power supply labeled 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz: This is usually the simplest way to charge several modern devices.
- A converter only when necessary: Bring one for a genuinely necessary 120 V-only appliance after checking its wattage and frequency requirements.
- A dual-voltage hair tool where possible: A dual-voltage travel hair dryer, curling iron, or straightener is usually more practical than carrying a large converter.
Some universal adapters explicitly exclude Type D and Type M. For instance, the product page for Epicka’s Pocket 111 model states that it is not compatible with those Indian plug types. This is why the product’s country-compatibility list matters more than its “universal” label.
A reliable decision procedure
- Find the appliance or charger’s input label.
- If it says
100–240 V, 50/60 Hz, pack a Type D/M-compatible plug adapter and no voltage converter. - If it says
220–240 V, 50 Hz, it is normally compatible with India; add an adapter if the plug shape differs. - If it says
110–120 V only, check wattage and frequency before buying a step-down converter. - For a heater, hair dryer, iron, or kitchen appliance, prefer a dual-voltage travel version whenever practical.
- Confirm that the converter’s direction is 230 V input to approximately 120 V output.
- Make sure the appliance’s wattage is below the converter’s rating.
- Set any voltage selector before plugging in.
Safety checks in hotels and other accommodation
- Do not use cracked, loose, damaged, or sparking outlets.
- Do not force a plug into a socket or rely on a loose physical connection.
- Do not defeat grounding with an improvised adapter.
- Keep high-wattage appliances on equipment rated for their load.
- Use a converter with overload and thermal protection where available.
- Stop immediately if an appliance buzzes, sparks, smells of burning, becomes unusually hot, or behaves erratically.
Hotel outlets, extension cords, and travel adapters may not be rated for hair dryers, irons, heaters, or other high-wattage equipment. A suitable plug shape does not guarantee that the entire setup can safely carry the load.

Final packing checklist
- Check every charger and appliance for its voltage and frequency rating.
- Pack an adapter explicitly compatible with Indian Type D sockets; Type M support is useful too.
- Bring no converter for equipment marked
100–240 V, 50/60 Hz. - Use a properly rated step-down converter only for a suitable 120 V-only device.
- Replace high-wattage US-only hair tools with dual-voltage travel models when possible.
- Check converter wattage, direction, grounding, overload protection, and frequency limitations.
