Type about:blank in the address bar and press Enter. Both Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge use this browser-internal address to display an empty page.
What is about:blank?
about:blank is not a normal website or public domain. It is a built-in browser address that opens an empty document. Include the colon exactly as shown; do not enter about://blank, https://about:blank, or www.about:blank.
The browser’s tabs, address bar, and other controls normally remain visible. Only the document area is blank.

- Open Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
about:blank. - Press Enter.
This opens a blank page temporarily without changing your browser settings.

Make Microsoft Edge open a blank page at startup
In the current Chromium-based Microsoft Edge:
- Open
edge://settings/onStartup. - Select Open a specific page or pages.
- Choose Add a new page.
- Enter
about:blankand save it. - Restart Edge to test the setting.
Menu names and available controls can vary by Edge release, platform, and organization policy. On a managed device, Group Policy or Intune settings may override your choice.
This setting controls what Edge opens when it starts. It does not necessarily make every new tab blank. Edge’s standard New Tab page is a separate browser-controlled experience.
Set a blank startup page in Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer guidance is now legacy guidance. Microsoft ended Internet Explorer 11 desktop support on June 15, 2022, and recommends Internet Explorer mode in Edge for websites that still require legacy compatibility.

If standalone Internet Explorer is still available on your system:
- Open Internet Options.
- On the General tab, find Home page.
- Enter
about:blank. - Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Internet Explorer.
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer policy documentation identifies the home-page control and the blank-page option for new tabs.
Can every new tab be blank?
In Internet Explorer, the new-tab behavior can be configured to use a blank page, identified as about:blank.

In Edge, adding about:blank under On startup does not universally change every new tab. The result depends on the Edge version, available settings, extensions, and device-management policies. Enterprise administrators can configure start-page and certain New Tab behaviors through Microsoft Edge browser policies.
If you specifically need a completely blank document for every consumer Edge new tab, check Edge’s current New Tab settings first. A reputable extension may provide that behavior, but review its permissions, publisher, compatibility, and privacy practices before installing it.
Is about:blank safe?
Yes. about:blank itself is a legitimate browser-internal address and simply displays an empty document. It does not by itself indicate malware or a hacked website.

Investigate if the browser changed to about:blank unexpectedly, especially if you also see unfamiliar extensions, redirects, pop-ups, advertising pages, security warnings, or settings that revert after every restart. Microsoft documented historical Internet Explorer malware that changed home pages, but that older advisory does not mean every modern blank page is malicious.
When a blank page is actually a browser problem
Check the address bar before troubleshooting:
about:blank: The browser is displaying the intentional empty document.- A normal
httporhttpsaddress: The website may have failed to render. - An
edge://address: Edge is showing an internal browser page, not a regular website. - No response and an unresponsive window: Treat this as a browser fault, not normal
about:blankbehavior.
For a normal website that appears blank, reload it and test it in an InPrivate window. Temporarily check extensions, clear relevant cached data, and verify that Edge is up to date. Blank windows, crashes, corrupted profiles, graphics-driver issues, extensions, cache problems, and damaged installations are among the areas covered by Microsoft’s Edge startup and blank-window troubleshooting guidance.

Using legacy websites today
Use modern Edge for ordinary websites. If a business application or older site requires Internet Explorer-specific behavior, use IE mode rather than trying to restore standalone Internet Explorer.

- Open
edge://settings/defaultBrowser. - Configure the Internet Explorer compatibility option if it is available.
- Add the affected site to the IE-mode pages list when required.
- Reload the site in Internet Explorer mode.
The option may be unavailable or locked on managed devices. Organizations can control IE mode with policies and an Enterprise Site List. See Microsoft’s IE mode guidance and IE mode FAQ for current compatibility and management details.
Bottom line
The blank-page address is about:blank. Enter it directly for an immediate empty page, or configure it as Edge’s startup page at edge://settings/onStartup. Remember that startup behavior and new-tab behavior are separate, and use Edge’s Internet Explorer mode for legacy websites instead of relying on retired standalone Internet Explorer.
