UBTECH’s Walker S2 humanoid robots are part of a RMB264 million project in Fangchenggang, China, near the China–Vietnam border. The announced work includes guiding travelers, managing crowds, logistics, inspection and patrol assistance. That is not evidence of armed robots patrolling the frontier or replacing border officers.
The distinction matters: the public announcement describes a trial and service-and-industrial deployment around border crossings and related facilities, not autonomous military surveillance across remote terrain.
What was announced
On November 25, 2025, UBTECH Robotics announced that it had won a contract worth RMB264 million—reported at the time as about US$37 million—from a humanoid-robot center in Fangchenggang, Guangxi. The project involves the company’s Walker S2 and is described as covering robot data collection and testing, AI education, and practical deployments. The RMB264 million figure is the value of the broader project contract, not a disclosed unit price or proof of how many robots will work at the border. The public reporting does not give a confirmed fleet count or identify each operating site.

Why the location is not the whole story
Fangchenggang is a city in southern China’s Guangxi region, which borders Vietnam. It has border-crossing, freight, port, manufacturing and logistics activity. So “Vietnam border” in this story means the Chinese side of the China–Vietnam border region; it does not mean Vietnam is deploying robots on its side.
A customs hall, logistics facility or factory is a consequential but relatively structured place to test robots: routes and work areas can be defined, and people generally move through established spaces. That is different from navigating an extensive, uneven and less predictable frontier. The contract does not establish that Walker S2 units will patrol the whole border, or even that they will operate outdoors.
What the robots are intended to do
Public descriptions point to practical assistance rather than enforcement. Proposed uses include guiding travelers, helping manage passenger or personnel flows, assisting with patrol duties, moving materials, providing commercial or public services, and inspecting industrial sites. That could mean a robot directs someone toward a queue, carries an item or performs a facility round. More detailed workflows—such as scanning cargo, checking a traveler against a database or authorizing entry—have not been established by the disclosed project description. Assisting with an inspection is not the same as making the decision or approving a release.
Meet Walker S2
Walker S2 is UBTECH’s full-size industrial humanoid, marketed for manufacturing and other real-world work. UBTECH materials describe it as an “embodied intelligent” robot: a machine intended to combine sensing, movement and task execution in physical environments, rather than operate only as software.
Company materials list 52 degrees of freedom and a load figure of up to 15 kilograms in a cited operating context. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results from the Fangchenggang project. How the battery swap works
Walker S2’s most distinctive advertised feature is autonomous battery replacement. UBTECH says a swap takes about three minutes. In broad terms, the operating sequence is:
- The robot detects that its battery is low or that a swap is due.
- It navigates to a designated battery-swap station.
- It removes the depleted battery and replaces it with a charged one.
- It returns to its assigned task.
The company presents this as a way to support continuous operation in industrial settings. It does not give a robot infinite endurance: sustained service still depends on charged spare batteries, working swap stations, reliable navigation and alignment, maintenance, software and human oversight. “24/7” is best understood as an operating goal for a supported system, not a claim that one robot can work without interruption. What “autonomous” does—and does not—mean
In robotics, autonomy can refer to several different abilities: walking without a joystick, navigating a mapped building, avoiding obstacles, completing a predefined task or choosing among task steps. It does not automatically mean the machine has authority to make legal, immigration or security decisions.

Nothing in the public project description establishes that Walker S2 can detain people, decide who may enter China, conduct searches on its own authority, use force or independently classify someone as a threat. The supported framing is border-crossing assistance and facility work—not autonomous armed border enforcement.

A public crossing brings variables that a controlled production line may not: moving crowds, luggage, children, vehicles, multiple languages, changing light and weather, and people who do not follow predictable routes. A robot that misdirects a traveler, collides with someone or raises an unnecessary alarm can create real consequences even if it never makes an immigration decision.
Humanoid form may be useful where existing doors, stairs, corridors, workbenches and tools are designed for people, or where tasks change. But it is not automatically the best design. On smooth floors, a wheeled robot can be more stable, faster and simpler; fixed cameras may be more economical for queue monitoring, and drones may cover open areas, subject to weather and airspace constraints. Human officers remain better suited to ambiguous interactions and decisions with legal consequences.

What is still unknown
Publicly available material reviewed for this article does not establish the exact number of robots delivered to Fangchenggang, the specific crossings or facilities where they operate, whether they work outdoors, or whether they have been in continuous live service since the expected December 2025 delivery start. Nor does it provide independently verified border-site figures for uptime, error rates, productivity or safety.
A later TechTimes report claims Walker S2 units entered live customs work and describes capabilities including access to databases and cargo scanning. Those operational details are not corroborated by the primary UBTECH materials or stronger reporting cited here, so they should not be treated as confirmed facts about this deployment.
Other important procurement questions remain unanswered: Who can override a robot? What does it do if it loses its location or communications? Who reviews a referral or alert? Are images or conversations stored, and where is data processed? What safety certifications and incident procedures apply? These are questions for the deploying organizations; the available descriptions do not specify their answers.
