If a YouTube video freezes, first lower its quality, reload YouTube, and test another video. Then try a private browser window or a different connection. These quick tests usually reveal whether the problem is buffering, a browser or app fault, an extension, the device, or the video itself.
Do not reset everything immediately. A single video freezing needs a different response from every video freezing, and a picture that stops while audio continues points to a different problem from a loading spinner.
First, identify what “freezing” means

Also check the scope of the problem. Play another video from a different channel, preferably a short non-live video. If other videos work, the original upload or stream may be the issue. If every YouTube video freezes, investigate the connection, app, browser, extensions, or device. If other streaming services also fail, the network or device is more likely than YouTube alone.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Lower the quality: Select the player’s Settings gear, choose Quality, and try Auto, 480p, or 360p. This helps when the video is buffering.
- Reload YouTube: Reload the browser tab, or close and reopen the YouTube app. If the page is unresponsive, close the tab or app completely.
- Try another video: This separates a video-specific problem from a wider playback failure.
- Close competing apps and tabs: Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streams.
- Restart the device: Restart the phone, tablet, computer, TV, or streaming device before moving to more disruptive fixes.
YouTube lists changing quality, restarting the app or browser, restarting the device, updating software, checking extensions, and clearing cache or cookies among its main playback remedies. See YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guide.

Check whether your internet connection is the cause
YouTube publishes these approximate recommended sustained speeds:

| 4K | 20 Mbps |
These are not guarantees. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, latency, router performance, VPNs, other devices, and the playback device can still cause freezing. A speed test measures your connection to one test server at one moment; it does not guarantee a perfect route to YouTube.
To isolate the network:
- Switch briefly between Wi-Fi and mobile data, remembering that mobile-data charges or limits may apply.
- Try Ethernet on a desktop, TV, or streaming device when practical.
- Move closer to the router and check whether other devices are using the connection heavily.
- Pause downloads, backups, updates, and other streams.
- Restart the modem and router. For separate devices, unplug the modem and router, wait about one minute, reconnect them, wait for their lights to stabilize, and test YouTube again. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance describes this procedure.
If YouTube works on a trusted alternate connection, the original Wi-Fi or internet service is the leading suspect. If multiple services fail across multiple devices, contact your internet provider after checking for local network congestion and signal problems.

On a computer, open an incognito or private window and play the same video. If it works there, an extension, stored site data, or a browser setting is likely involved.

In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Temporarily turn extensions off, reload YouTube, and test again. Re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict. Pay particular attention to ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, video-download tools, user-agent switchers, VPN or proxy extensions, and playback-control or caption tools.
YouTube identifies ad-blocking extensions as a possible playback factor and may instruct users to allow ads on YouTube when an ad blocker is interfering. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a reason to leave security software disabled permanently. Restore protection afterward or use a vendor-supported YouTube exception.
Also update the browser and operating system. In Chrome, use More > Help > About Google Chrome, install an available update, and select Relaunch. YouTube supports current compatible browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but menu names vary by browser and operating-system version.

YouTube requires JavaScript for normal playback. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript, and make sure sites are allowed to use it.

Privacy tools, DNS filters, parental controls, workplace networks, VPNs, proxies, or modified DNS settings can also block scripts or media requests. If the problem continues after ordinary browser tests, temporarily test without those layers where safe and permitted.
Clear browser data carefully
Stale or corrupted site data can cause playback or page-formatting problems, but clearing all cookies may sign you out and remove site preferences. In Chrome, select More > Delete browsing data, choose a time range, select the relevant categories, and choose Delete data. Where available, clearing data for YouTube or related sites only is less disruptive. Details and consequences are covered in YouTube’s cache and cookie guidance.
Fix YouTube on a phone or tablet
- Update YouTube from the device’s app store.
- Install pending operating-system updates and restart the device.
- Try YouTube in a mobile browser to determine whether the app alone is affected.
- On Android, open Settings > Apps or Applications > YouTube > Storage or Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and test again. If the app remains defective, reinstall it.
Android menu labels differ by manufacturer and version. Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage or Clear data. The latter can reset settings and sign-in state. iPhone and iPad menu paths also differ, so use the current app and operating-system controls rather than assuming Android instructions apply.

When audio continues but the picture freezes
This pattern is more suggestive of rendering or graphics trouble than insufficient bandwidth, especially if the buffer appears healthy. Try another browser, lower the resolution, close GPU-intensive applications and browser tabs, and update the operating system and graphics driver.

In Chrome, YouTube’s green-screen guidance recommends testing hardware acceleration: select More > Settings > Advanced > System, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, relaunch Chrome, and test YouTube. See YouTube’s green-screen troubleshooting page.
Hardware acceleration can reduce CPU use, so disabling it is a diagnostic step rather than a universal fix. It may increase CPU use, heat, fan noise, and battery drain. If it makes no difference, turn it back on.

- Close and reopen YouTube.
- Restart the TV, streaming stick, or set-top box.
- Check for YouTube app and device-firmware updates.
- Restart the router and check the device’s Wi-Fi signal.
- Try another video and test YouTube on a phone using the same network.
For a full power cycle, unplug the TV or streaming device, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for it to restart. Older TVs may have limited codec, resolution, or app support. A TV can also have adequate internet speed but struggle with 4K processing, weak Wi-Fi reception, nearly full storage, or an HDMI problem that interrupts the picture while audio continues.
If only one video freezes
Do not start by resetting the router if every other video works. Instead:

- Reload the page or app.
- Move the playback position forward a few seconds.
- Try the video in another browser or on another device.
- Check whether it is a live stream, premiere, rental, age-restricted video, or region-limited content.
- Try again later if it is live or recently published.
- Use YouTube’s feedback option after reproducing the problem if it persists.
These tests cannot prove that an upload is damaged, but they can show that the problem is specific to one video, stream, account, region, or device. A live stream can also have broadcaster-side or latency problems that ordinary recorded videos do not.
Use Stats for Nerds for advanced diagnosis
When basic tests fail, YouTube’s Stats for Nerds can show playback details such as video and viewport resolution, buffer health, network activity, codec information, dropped frames, and connection identifiers. The controls vary between desktop, mobile, TV, and app versions, so use the current player or device menus rather than relying on one universal path.
Interpret the information as clues, not one-to-one diagnoses:

- Low buffer health with changing network activity: may indicate connection instability or congestion.
- Many dropped frames with adequate buffer: may indicate device, browser, or graphics-performance trouble.
- Healthy buffer but a frozen picture: points more toward the player, an extension, or rendering.
- Only live videos fail: may involve the live stream, broadcast delay, or stream-side conditions.
When further troubleshooting is unlikely to help
- Contact your internet provider when several streaming services fail across multiple devices, especially after router and congestion checks.
- Contact device support when the phone, computer, TV, or streaming device freezes outside YouTube, overheats, has storage problems, or crashes in other apps.
- Use YouTube feedback or support when the same account- or video-specific problem persists across devices and connections.
Do not assume YouTube is experiencing an outage based on one frozen video. Compare several videos, devices, and connections, then check current service-status reporting if the problem appears widespread.
What about YouTube Premium?
YouTube Premium can remove ads, provide offline downloads on mobile, support background playback, and include YouTube Music Premium benefits. It may suit viewers who want ad-free viewing or who need offline playback during unreliable connectivity. However, it is not a guaranteed fix for weak Wi-Fi, a failing router, an outdated TV, browser extensions, graphics problems, or a YouTube-side issue.
Plan availability and prices vary by country and can change. Check the current offer in YouTube under Purchases and memberships or at the official YouTube Premium page rather than relying on an old advertised price.
