First check whether the game is actually in your Epic Games Store Library. If it is missing, the problem is usually the claim, account, filters, or title availability; if it is listed but will not install, focus on Epic’s service status, launcher cache, destination drive, and permissions. Work through the checks below before reinstalling the launcher, which Epic warns can remove installed titles.
Start with the symptom
- Game is not in Library: check that the claim completed, you are using the right Epic account, and the title is not filtered or hidden.
- Game is listed as Unavailable: check release date, platform and operating-system support, then refresh the launcher session and cache.
- Game is listed but Install does nothing or fails: check Epic’s service status, restart the launcher, clear its cache, and verify the install drive and permissions.
- You see a specific error: follow the section for that message rather than treating every failure as a network problem.
Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guide recommends checking service status and covers updates, cache, administrator privileges, and reinstalling. Exact labels can change between launcher updates.
If Epic will not let you claim the free game
If checkout or the Get process fails, the game has not necessarily been added to your account. One specific message is “Your account is unable to download any more free games at this time.” This refers to claiming a free game; it does not by itself mean a game already in your Library has a broken download.

These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee. Avoid repeatedly retrying checkout, and do not assume buying another item will lift the restriction. If it remains after the waiting period, contact Epic Support with the exact error.

If the claimed game is missing from Library
- Verify the account. Sign out, then sign in to the same Epic account used to claim the title. If you normally sign in through Google, Apple, Facebook, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or another linked service, use that same method. A different login method can lead to a different account.
- Reset Library filters so all titles are visible, and check whether the launcher is set to hide games.
- Confirm the claim completed. If available, check your Epic transaction or order history and any claim confirmation. Seeing a game advertised as free is not the same as completing its claim.
- Check the title and platform. A free offer may be limited by region, platform, operating system, or eligibility. A title claimed for one platform may not appear as an installable PC game in the launcher.
Epic lists account mismatch, external-login mismatch, hidden games, operating-system incompatibility, and platform mismatch among reasons games can be missing. See its missing-games guidance. If the claim is confirmed but the title remains absent after these checks, contact Epic rather than claiming it again through a different account.
If the game says “Unavailable”
“Unavailable” can reflect a stale launcher session or cached display, but it can also mean the title is not currently available for your account, region, platform, or operating system. If it is unreleased, check the game’s store page and its Available field; a pre-purchased or claimed title may not be downloadable before its release date. Epic explains this availability check in its download availability guidance.
Then try signing out and back in. If Unreal Engine is installed and the launcher shows the title in the wrong area, switch between the Library and Unreal Engine tabs. On Windows, you can also test running the launcher as administrator and clear its cache. Epic also lists changing launcher language as a possible workaround for an unavailable listing; treat that as an optional, uncertain fix, not a universal solution. See Epic’s unavailable-game steps.

If the download or installation will not start
Check Epic’s services first
Visit the Epic Games Public Status page before changing computer settings. If the Store, login, or download services are impaired, local cache or permission changes will not restore them; wait for service to recover. If services are operational and the issue is limited to one account or computer, continue below.
Fully exit, restart, and update the launcher
- Close the Epic Games Launcher. On Windows, open the system-tray overflow area, right-click the Epic icon, and choose Exit; closing the window alone may leave it running.
- Reopen the launcher and allow any offered update to finish.
- Return to Library and try the install again.
Clear the launcher web cache
Cache files can cause display or launcher errors. Quit the launcher completely first; otherwise files may be in use. Delete only the named cache folders if they exist. This should not delete owned games, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Windows
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete any of these folders that are present:
webcache,webcache_4147, orwebcache_4430. - Reopen the launcher and retry.
macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder…
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash, empty the Trash, and relaunch Epic Games.

On Windows, test administrator access
Exit the launcher, right-click its shortcut or executable, and select Run as administrator, then retry. Use this as a troubleshooting test rather than running the launcher elevated permanently. If it works, investigate whether your user account can write to the selected install folder, or whether security software is blocking access.

Check the destination drive and folder
From Library, select the game, choose an installation directory, and click Install. Before retrying, verify that the drive is connected and mounted, the folder exists or can be created, the drive is writable, and you have enough free space. Installation and updates may need more room than the download alone; required space varies by game, so check that title’s requirements rather than relying on a universal number. Epic also notes that insufficient drive space can leave an installation stuck at Verifying or Installing. Its standard install steps show the Library-to-Install flow.
If clicking Install does nothing, check service status, restart and update the launcher, clear cache, then test a straightforward local folder on a drive with adequate space. Security software can also block writes; if you suspect that, use the security product’s safe exception process. Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.

Fixes for specific errors and edge cases
“Your account is unable to download any more free games at this time”
This is a claim restriction, not a diagnosis of an installed-game download. Turn off a VPN, try mobile data rather than Wi-Fi, and wait at least 24 hours before retrying. If it persists, send Epic Support the exact message and account details.
IS-0003: “Install Failed — Could not create directory”
This points more strongly to a folder, permissions, or launcher-state problem than to the free promotion. Epic’s sequence is: exit the launcher, clear its web cache, restart the computer, run the launcher as administrator on Windows, and retry. Also confirm that the chosen drive and destination folder are writable. See Epic’s IS-0003 guidance.

“Verifying” or “Installing” never finishes
Check available space on the installation drive first. If there is enough room, check whether Epic services are impaired, then restart the launcher and confirm the drive remains connected and writable. Epic’s installation troubleshooting specifically calls out drive space for a stuck verification or installation state.

Epic shows Install, but game files are already on the drive
Do not delete the existing folder as a first step. Note its exact location and approximate size, then check Epic’s instructions for moving or reconnecting installed games. If the launcher cannot recognize the files, it may need to verify them or download some or all of the game again. Epic’s game-access guidance covers moved game files and launcher directories; do not treat unofficial file tricks as guaranteed.
Reinstall the launcher only after safer checks
Reinstalling is a last resort, not the first fix. Before doing it, confirm you can access the correct Epic account and identify or back up existing game folders. Epic warns that its standard launcher reinstall process removes installed titles. Try account, release-status, service, cache, storage, and permission checks first; consult Epic’s current troubleshooting instructions before reinstalling.
When to contact Epic Support
Escalate if a completed claim is still missing after checking the account, filters, platform, and cache; if an account restriction persists beyond Epic’s stated wait; if several titles fail despite service availability and local checks; or if the issue concerns payment, entitlement, or regional eligibility. Include the exact error text or code, the game name, operating system, and whether the title appears in Library. For an uncovered error code, search Epic Support for that exact code instead of applying unrelated fixes.
