Futurism reported on June 4, 2024, citing CNBC, that Elon Musk directed Nvidia to prioritize thousands of H100 AI accelerators that had been reserved for Tesla for use by X and xAI. The report also described an email warning that layoffs could delay an existing H100 project at Tesla’s Texas factory. The underlying emails were not reproduced in Futurism’s article and were not independently verified here, so the allocation is a reported allegation—not established proof that Tesla’s project was delayed or that Musk was abandoning the automaker.

What the Nvidia emails reportedly said

According to Futurism’s summary of CNBC reporting, Nvidia emails indicated that thousands of H100 chips previously allocated to Tesla were to be prioritized for Musk’s social-media company X and his artificial-intelligence startup xAI. “Thousands” is the only quantity identified in the report; no exact chip count was established.

The hardware was Nvidia’s H100 data-center accelerator, an enterprise component used for large-scale AI computing. The story concerned corporate supply allocations, not a consumer graphics-card purchase or recommendation.

What is alleged versus what is confirmed

Question What the June 2024 report supports What it does not establish
Were Tesla-reserved H100s redirected? Futurism, citing CNBC, said emails described a plan to prioritize previously reserved Tesla chips for X and xAI. The original email documents and an exact quantity were not presented in the source reviewed here.
Did Tesla’s AI work slow down? An email reportedly warned that layoffs could delay an existing H100 project at Tesla’s Texas factory. No specific delay is independently confirmed, and causation is not demonstrated.
Did Musk leave Tesla? The report raised that question in the context of his other companies and Tesla’s AI ambitions. It does not prove that Musk abandoned Tesla or gave up on its autonomy program.

Why the allocation mattered to Tesla

Tesla has tied its long-term strategy to artificial intelligence, self-driving technology and robotics. In the company’s first-quarter 2024 earnings call, Musk was quoted by Futurism as saying: “If somebody doesn’t believe Tesla’s going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company. We will, and we are.”

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Moving scarce accelerators from a Tesla reservation to X or xAI could therefore create a conflict between Tesla’s stated computing needs and Musk’s separate businesses. That is a governance and resource-allocation concern. It is not, by itself, evidence that Tesla’s autonomy effort failed or that a delay occurred.

The reported Texas factory warning

Futurism said one email obtained by CNBC warned that Tesla layoffs could delay an existing H100 project at the company’s Texas factory. The wording describes a potential consequence, not a confirmed outcome. The report supplies no completion date, revised schedule or independent confirmation that the project was actually postponed.

Timeline of the claims

  1. January 2024: Futurism quoted a Musk post saying, “I’m uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI and robotics without having [about] 25 percent voting control.” The bracketed clarification appears in Futurism’s displayed quotation.
  2. First-quarter 2024 earnings call: Musk said, as quoted by Futurism, “If somebody doesn’t believe Tesla’s going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company. We will, and we are.”
  3. June 4, 2024: Victor Tangermann’s Futurism article summarized CNBC’s account of Nvidia emails alleging that Tesla-reserved H100s would be prioritized for X and xAI and that layoffs might delay a Texas project.

Does this show Musk was “giving up on Tesla”?

No definitive conclusion follows from the reported allocation. The allegation could indicate competing demands for AI infrastructure across Musk-controlled companies, and it reasonably raises questions about Tesla’s priority. But an internal shipment decision is different from a corporate exit, and the article did not document a transfer of ownership, a resignation or a decision to end Tesla’s autonomy work.

Futurism also framed the episode against contemporaneous pressure on Tesla. Its June 2024 article said Tesla shares were down almost 30 percent so far that year and referred to a controversial $56 billion pay package. Those figures describe the situation at that time; they are not current performance or compensation figures.

How to read the headline and the evidence

  • “Leaked emails” is attribution, not independent verification: the account comes from CNBC reporting as summarized by Futurism, while the email text was not reproduced in the source reviewed here.
  • “Diverting” describes the alleged prioritization: the report says chips reserved for Tesla were to be prioritized for X and xAI. It does not provide a precise shipment record.
  • “As Tesla flails” is editorial framing: the underlying evidence cited here consists of the allocation allegation, the reported warning about a possible delay and 2024 context—not a neutral measurement that Tesla was “flailing.”

Bottom line for readers

The June 2024 report described a potential conflict between Tesla’s AI ambitions and Musk’s need to supply computing capacity to X and xAI. It supports scrutiny of how resources are allocated among his companies, but it does not independently prove that Tesla’s H100 project was delayed, establish an exact number of redirected chips or show that Musk abandoned Tesla.
