An AI-generated Stoke City badge can offer a visual guess, not a leak or a club proposal. Stoke has since made the real decision: supporters voted 68% to 32% in favour of a new crest for the 2026–27 season. The approved design draws on the club’s 1977–92 badge and Stoke-on-Trent’s pottery heritage. Without the original AI image, its exact shape, wording and symbols cannot be verified; any comparison must keep that distinction clear.
AI concept or official badge? The distinction matters
An image generator can combine a prompt such as “Stoke City football badge” with familiar football-design conventions: a shield, red-and-white stripes, a kiln, a regional emblem or a foundation date. The result may look plausible, but plausibility does not make it a club design. Unless an image’s creator, prompt and date are documented, it should be described as an AI concept—not a leak, a supporter-vote option or a prediction that Stoke City endorsed.
The specific AI artwork behind the “according to AI” framing cannot be confirmed from the available evidence. So it would be misleading to claim that it showed a particular shield, the words “The Potters,” the year 1863, or any other detail. Those are things to check against the image itself, not details to infer from the headline.

What Stoke actually chose
The confirmed crest is a modernised design inspired by the badge Stoke used from 1977 to 1992. It brings the club’s local and football identities together through a shield, red-and-white stripes, a bottle kiln, the Staffordshire knot and the club’s foundation year. The nickname “The Potters” connects the team to Stoke-on-Trent’s ceramic-making heritage.
That mix is more than decoration. The stripes signal Stoke’s established colours; the kiln points to the city’s pottery history; and the Staffordshire knot gives the design a regional reference. The result returns to a recognisably historical visual direction while updating it for the club’s present identity. Coverage of the confirmed design describes its 1977–92 inspiration, while local reporting on the crest identifies its principal symbols.
How to compare an AI badge with the real crest

If an AI concept includes a kiln or knot, that could make it feel locally grounded—but it would not prove that the generator anticipated the eventual design. These symbols are established parts of Stoke’s identity, and a prompt can lead an image model toward familiar motifs. A meaningful prediction claim would require the actual image and a reliable date showing it came before the club’s final design was known.

The new crest followed consultation with supporters, including meetings and surveys, before the vote on whether to retain the existing badge or change it. The club’s design process considered three broad directions: a version inspired by the 1977–92 badge, an evolution of the existing crest and an alternative concept. That context helps explain why a historically grounded concept might resonate: supporters were considering how clearly the crest represented Stoke and its place. But the final vote was not unanimous. A 68% majority backed the change, while 32% preferred to keep the existing crest. Reporting described a range of responses, including support for stronger city and pottery references as well as criticism of aspects of the chosen design. Approval of a change should not be paraphrased as universal enthusiasm for every detail.
What makes a convincing Stoke badge?
An effective concept needs to work as both a piece of storytelling and a practical mark. A kiln and Staffordshire knot can make the design more specific to Stoke than a generic shield, but fine detail may disappear when the crest is reduced to a small shirt or app icon. Heritage can create an immediate connection, while dated typography or crowded composition can make a badge feel less usable today.

- Local authenticity: Does it reflect Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire rather than rely on generic football imagery?
- Recognition at different sizes: Are the main shapes still clear on a shirt, a broadcast graphic and a small digital icon?
- Distinctiveness: Could the mark be mistaken for another red-and-white club?
- Heritage with a contemporary finish: Does it reference Stoke’s past without simply reproducing an old badge?
- Reproduction: Can the design be applied consistently to embroidery, print and signage, including simpler or single-colour versions?
AI tools can rapidly suggest combinations of symbols and styles, but the images they produce do not establish that those choices are historically accurate, legible in production or acceptable to supporters. Those questions need human review and, in a club identity project, a formal decision-making process.
The rollout is phased, not a one-day switch
The crest is intended for Stoke’s 2026–27 kit, with the wider change across club channels, merchandise and the stadium taking place over time. Reporting in June 2026 said old badges had begun to be removed from parts of the bet365 Stadium ahead of the new-season rollout. It is also worth separating this redesign from the pottery-themed icon discussed in 2024. That earlier mark was reported as likely to be a special kit icon, not confirmation that the club was replacing its permanent crest. Verdict
An AI image can be an entertaining way to imagine Stoke City’s next badge, especially if it draws on the club’s colours and local history. But without the original artwork and its provenance, its specific design cannot responsibly be described or credited with predicting the final crest. The authoritative design is the supporter-approved, 1977–92-inspired badge planned for 2026–27. Treat the AI version as speculation; judge the real crest on its own history, design and mixed supporter response.
