There is no single required Wix header-image size. For a full-width strip or hero background, start with an image at least 1920 × 1080 pixels. For a traditional site header, choose a wide banner whose proportions match the header’s actual height, then check the crop separately on desktop and mobile. The 1920 × 1080 recommendation is for the uploaded source image; it is not a requirement that your visible header be 1,080 pixels tall.
The right size depends on where the image is used
Wix uses “header” for more than one layout. The practical answer changes according to the placement.
Classic site header
A classic header contains elements such as your logo, navigation and account controls. Wix does not publish one universal pixel width and height for this area. Wix recommends an image whose resolution and dimensions are compatible with the header, such as a banner image. In practice, use a wide image with the same general aspect ratio as the header rather than a square photograph.

Full-width strip or hero background
For a strip or full-width hero background, Wix recommends uploading an image with a resolution of no less than 1920 × 1080 px. This gives the editor enough source pixels for large desktop displays and for cropping at different browser widths. It does not dictate the strip’s rendered height; the height is controlled by the section or strip layout in the editor.

These are source-image and layout recommendations, not promises that every visitor will see the same rectangle. A 1920 × 1080 file may be cropped substantially in a short banner, while a shorter header may display only a central band of the image.
How to resize a Wix header image
- Prepare the source. For a strip background, use at least 1920 × 1080 px. For a classic header, select a wide banner and remove unnecessary edge detail. Compress the file enough for the web without introducing visible artifacts.
- Open the relevant page in the Wix Editor. Select the header or strip rather than an unrelated image elsewhere on the page.
- Set the header height. Wix lets you drag the header’s stretch handle to make it taller or shorter. The visible height is a layout setting, not the pixel height of the source file.
- Add or replace the image. Drag the image onto the header, stretch it across the available area, and move it backward so it does not cover the logo, navigation or other header elements.
- Adjust the crop and focal position. Use the editor’s image or background positioning controls to keep the subject visible. A centered focal point is the safest starting position, but a deliberately offset subject can work if you verify every breakpoint.
- Check the mobile editor. Wix creates a mobile-friendly view from desktop content, but the mobile header can have a different height and crop. Make sure faces, product details, logos and any text remain visible in the narrow layout.
- Preview and publish. Test the page at a wide desktop width, a smaller laptop width and a phone width. Then inspect the published URL, because browser chrome, real content and loading behavior can differ from the editor preview.
Why a Wix header image is cropped
The container and image have different aspect ratios
A wide source placed in a short header cannot display every pixel without either empty space or cropping. Wix fills the area by trimming portions of the image. A tall source can lose its top and bottom; an extremely wide source can lose its sides on mobile.

The header was resized after the image was added
Changing the header height changes the visible window into the image. If you drag the stretch handle after positioning the background, revisit the focal point.
Desktop and mobile widths are not equivalent
Full-width strips span the browser width and adapt to the visitor’s screen. A composition that looks balanced on a wide monitor may place a face or product outside the mobile crop. Treat mobile as a separate composition review, not merely a scaled desktop screenshot.
Overlay content hides the image
Logos, navigation and text can cover important areas even when the crop itself is correct. Move the background backward and reserve contrast for the overlay. Avoid placing essential information at the extreme edges.
Composition rules that survive responsive cropping
- Keep the focal subject central or in a broad safe zone. This is more robust than placing a face, product or headline against an edge.
- Leave breathing room. Edge details are the first to disappear when a narrow viewport crops the image.
- Do not bake critical text into the photograph. Use Wix text elements when possible so the words can reflow and remain accessible.
- Use sufficient contrast. A dark overlay, a calmer area behind navigation or a different image may be necessary for readable controls.
- Design for the shortest important crop. If the mobile header is shallow, check that the subject still reads when only a horizontal band is visible.
Resolution, file weight and loading speed
Starting at 1920 × 1080 gives Wix room to crop a hero image, but uploading a much larger original is not automatically better. Oversized files increase transfer time and can delay the first visual impression, particularly on mobile connections. Export a suitably compressed JPEG, WebP or PNG according to the image type, and remove metadata that is not needed. Keep transparency only when the design requires it.

The goal is enough source resolution for the largest intended display without carrying pixels that the layout will never show.
How to verify the result before launch
- In the desktop editor, inspect the widest and narrowest preview widths available.
- In the mobile editor, confirm the header height, crop, logo position and navigation contrast.
- Publish to a staging or temporary URL and open it on a physical phone and desktop browser.
- Test with browser zoom at 100% and with a narrower window; both can expose edge cropping.
- Check that the image does not hide clickable controls and that text remains readable over it.
- Recheck after changing the header height, adding a notification bar or changing the logo, because those edits alter the available image area.
Common problems and fixes
The image looks blurry
Use a higher-resolution source, especially for a full-width strip, and avoid enlarging a small original. For a strip background, begin with at least 1920 × 1080 px. Also check whether aggressive compression has removed detail.
The subject disappears on phones
Open the mobile editor, move the focal point toward the area that survives the narrow crop, and remove edge-critical details. If the composition cannot work at both widths, use a mobile-specific arrangement or a simpler image.
The header is too tall or too short
Drag the header’s stretch handle to set the visible height. Do not try to solve a layout-height problem by changing the source image’s pixel dimensions alone.
The navigation is covered
Send the image backward in the layer order and confirm that the header controls remain above it. Add contrast behind the navigation if the photo makes labels hard to read.

The editor looks correct but the published page does not
Inspect the published page at the same viewport width, clear a stale browser cache and verify that you edited the correct page or global header. Responsive behavior can reveal a crop that the desktop editor did not show.

Is 1920 × 1080 the required Wix header size?
No. It is Wix’s minimum recommended source resolution for a strip background. Wix does not define it as a universal header width, height or rendered banner size.
Should I make a separate image for mobile?
Not always. First test the desktop source in Wix’s mobile editor. Create a separate mobile composition when the focal subject or overlay cannot remain visible in the narrower crop.
