Usually, you do not need a program just to connect a Sony DUALSHOCK 4. For a Steam game, try Steam Input first. For Epic, Game Pass, Ubisoft Connect, older Windows games, and other XInput-only titles, DS4Windows is often the most useful compatibility layer. If the game natively supports the DUALSHOCK 4, use the controller directly without either mapper.
The connection itself can be wired or wireless. Sony documents PC use with a compatible micro-USB cable, Bluetooth, and its USB wireless adapter: PlayStation PC support.
Choose the software before installing anything
| Situation | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Steam game with native DUALSHOCK 4 support | Connect the controller and use native support or Steam Input. |
| Steam game does not respond | Enable Steam Input in that game’s Controller settings. |
| Epic, Game Pass, Ubisoft Connect, EA, or another launcher | Try the game directly; use DS4Windows if native support fails. |
| Older game expecting an Xbox 360/XInput controller | DS4Windows with Xbox 360-style virtual output. |
| Emulator | Configure the emulator directly first; add DS4Windows only if necessary. |
| PlayStation button icons are important | Prefer native support or Steam Input. DS4Windows commonly produces Xbox prompts. |
| Custom remapping, profiles, gyro, or macros | Use Steam Input for Steam titles or DS4Windows for broader Windows compatibility. |
| Only need a wired connection | No special program is required for the physical connection. |
“PS4 controller” normally means Sony’s official DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Third-party PS4-shaped pads can expose different devices and may not work with every method described here. These instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
USB or Bluetooth pairing only proves that Windows can communicate with the controller. Each game may use a different input API, and Steam notes that PlayStation support can vary by title and connection method: Steam’s controller-support explanation.

Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 by USB
- Plug the controller into the PC with a compatible micro-USB data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it, then open the game or Steam.
- Test the sticks and buttons. If the game supports the DUALSHOCK 4 natively, no mapper is needed.
- For Steam, check Steam’s controller interface. For a non-Steam or XInput-only game, install DS4Windows only after confirming that direct input is not working.
A charging-only cable can power the controller but cannot carry input data. If Windows sees nothing, try another USB port and a known-good data cable. Sony documents compatible micro-USB PC connections here: Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 pairing instructions.
For a basic check, use Windows’ game-controller test panel or Steam’s controller tester. Close other remappers while testing so you know which software is handling the device.
Connect wirelessly with Bluetooth
Put the controller into pairing mode
- Turn the controller off. If its player light is on, hold the PS button until the light turns off.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold Create and PS together until the light bar flashes.
- In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and choose the controller.
- Finish pairing, then start Steam or the game.
You need built-in Bluetooth or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, a charged controller, and current Windows Bluetooth drivers. Sony’s PC instructions are at playstation.com/en-us/support/playstation-gaming-on-pc. The DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one device at a time, so moving between a PS4 and PC may require pairing again.

Bluetooth establishes the Windows connection; it does not make every game understand PlayStation input. Steam Input or DS4Windows may still be needed.
Set up Steam Input for Steam games
Steam is the least complicated software path for games in your Steam library. Steam’s current model uses a game’s native PlayStation support when available and can route the controller through Steam Input when it is not: Steam’s PlayStation-controller update.
- Connect by USB or pair through Bluetooth.
- Open Steam and confirm that the controller appears.
- Open the game’s library page, select Properties, then Controller.
- Leave the default setting initially. If the game does not respond, choose Enable Steam Input (or the equivalent current per-game option).
- Restart the game after changing the setting.
Steam Input can translate the controller into Xbox-style input, so a functioning DUALSHOCK 4 may produce Xbox button prompts. Native support is more likely to preserve PlayStation icons and game-specific touchpad or motion features, but support depends on the title.

Set up DS4Windows for non-Steam and XInput-only games
DS4Windows on GitHub and ds4windows.app describe an independent, open-source input mapper and virtual-controller emulator. It is not Sony software and is not a Bluetooth driver. It reads a connected DUALSHOCK 4 and can expose an Xbox 360-style virtual controller that more Windows games recognize.
Install and configure it
- Download DS4Windows only from the maintained project’s official GitHub repository or website, not an advertising download portal. Several unrelated or abandoned projects use the same name.
- Install the components requested by the setup program. The project lists Windows 10 or newer, the Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable, and the ViGEmBus driver among its requirements: official requirements.
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it over Bluetooth. The project documents Bluetooth 4.0 or later and the Microsoft Bluetooth stack as its supported path.
- Open DS4Windows and verify that the physical controller appears.
- Choose Xbox 360-style virtual output when broad game compatibility matters.
- Start the game only after DS4Windows recognizes the controller. Create a per-game profile only when the default profile is insufficient.
The GitHub page listed version 3.5, released February 9, 2026, at the time of the supplied documentation; check that page for the current version and requirements before installing. DS4Windows generally must remain running while its virtual controller is in use. It cannot guarantee compatibility with every game, anti-cheat system, or third-party controller.
Prevent double input
Double input happens when a game receives both the real DUALSHOCK 4 and a virtual controller. Typical symptoms are menus moving twice, repeated button presses, uncontrolled movement, or two player-one controllers.

- Works with dualshock 4 controllers
- 6.5ft cable
- Made with quality ferrite coil
- Usb to Micro-USB USB
- Gold plated connectors
- Use one translation layer for a game: Steam Input or DS4Windows, not both.
- If DS4Windows is handling a Steam game, disable Steam’s overlapping controller remapping for that title.
- If Steam Input is handling the game, close DS4Windows and other controller emulators.
- If the physical device still leaks through, follow the maintained project’s advanced hiding guidance, which may involve HidHide: DS4Windows documentation.
Native support versus Xbox emulation
| Input path | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Native DUALSHOCK 4 support | Fewer background programs; PlayStation prompts and touchpad or motion features are more likely when the game implements them. | Not universal; USB and Bluetooth behavior can differ; some games still show Xbox prompts. |
| Steam Input | Simple per-game setup for Steam; profiles and broad compatibility. | May translate to Xbox-style input and can conflict with another mapper. |
| DS4Windows/XInput emulation | Useful for non-Steam, older, and XInput-only games; supports profiles and remapping. | Xbox prompts are common; drivers and a running utility are required; special features may not pass through. |
Touchpad, gyro, rumble, light bar, headset audio, and other features depend on the game, driver, software path, and USB or Bluetooth connection. Do not assume that emulation exposes every DUALSHOCK 4 feature.

Windows does not detect the controller
- Replace the cable with a confirmed data-capable micro-USB cable.
- Try another USB port.
- For Bluetooth, remove the old Windows pairing, charge the controller, and pair again in Create + PS mode.
- Check Bluetooth drivers and adapter compatibility.
Windows detects it, but the game does not
- Determine whether the game expects native PlayStation input or XInput.
- Use Steam Input for a Steam title, or DS4Windows for a non-Steam/XInput-only title.
- Check the game’s own controller setting and launch order.
It works in Steam but not Game Pass or another launcher
Steam Input does not automatically translate input for unrelated launchers. Close Steam’s remapping if it is interfering, then use DS4Windows when the other game requires XInput.

The game shows Xbox buttons
This is normally a prompt choice made by the game or by Xbox-style emulation, not a failed connection. Functional input and on-screen icons are separate.
Best Value
- Controller compatibility: Xbox Series X Controller, Xbox Series S Controller, Xbox One Bluetooth Controller, PS5/PS4/PS3 Controller, Switch Pro, Wii Mote, Wii U Pro.
- 8BitDo Controller compatibility: all 8BitDo Bluetooth Controllers and arcade stick.
- System compatibility: Switch, Windows, macOS, Steam Deck & Raspberry Pis and more. USB Wireless Adapter 2 is compatible with Steam Deck now.
- Support 6-axis motion on Switch and Vibration on X-input mode.
- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control and create macros with any button combination.
Bluetooth disconnects or behaves inconsistently
- Test with USB first.
- Check battery level, distance, interference, adapter drivers, and Windows pairing state.
- DS4Windows specifically documents reliance on the Microsoft Bluetooth stack; non-Microsoft stacks may have compatibility limits.
Two controllers appear
Disable either Steam Input or DS4Windows. If necessary, use the project’s advanced device-hiding instructions rather than running both mappers.
Touchpad, gyro, or audio is unavailable
Verify that the game supports the feature and that your chosen connection and translation layer expose it. Xbox-style emulation commonly provides standard buttons and axes rather than every Sony-specific function.
What should you use?
- Steam game: connect the controller and try native support or Steam Input first.
- Non-Steam, Game Pass, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, or older XInput game: try direct support, then use DS4Windows if the game cannot read the controller.
- Game with confirmed native DUALSHOCK 4 support: use no mapper.
- Troubleshooting: establish a wired USB connection before diagnosing Bluetooth.
That sequence avoids unnecessary drivers, preserves native PlayStation features when possible, and limits double-input conflicts.
