The bright spiral reported over Oklahoma on January 31, 2022, was most likely the illuminated plume or propellant release from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket’s upper stage—not an alien craft. The sighting came after a launch from Florida, and the stage’s later activity could be visible from hundreds of miles away.
What people saw over Oklahoma
That evening, residents described a bright, star-like white center surrounded by a circular or corkscrew-shaped glow. It appeared to move slowly, and people shared photographs and video as reports came in from Tulsa, Choctaw, Purcell, Salina, Edmond and Guthrie. The reports generally fell between about 6:45 and 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. MUFON said it received six Oklahoma reports describing a swirling vortex with a brilliant white center (MUFON’s account).
Some witnesses wondered whether it was a UFO. That described the object’s status at the time—unidentified—not its origin.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 had launched from Florida earlier that evening. The rocket’s upper stage continued on its orbital path after liftoff. The later Oklahoma display was attributed to activity involving that second stage, likely a release or expenditure of leftover propellant during an orbital maneuver or disposal sequence.

KJRH reported that meteorologist Mike Collier explained the spiral as a second-stage fuel-release effect. The launch had been delayed several times and previously scrubbed, according to the station’s report (KJRH’s coverage). MUFON’s account similarly described the upper stage spending excess fuel after traveling nearly one orbit.
The distinction matters: people were not necessarily watching the rocket body fly directly over Oklahoma. They were seeing a high-altitude event associated with the upper stage, far from the Florida launch site. The precise maneuver is less certain than the broader Falcon 9 connection; available coverage attributes the mechanism but does not establish that SpaceX issued a direct confirmation of the exact sequence.

Why would rocket activity make a spiral?
At high altitude, released propellant and exhaust expand into a broad cloud rather than behaving like a compact flame seen near the ground. If the stage is rotating or changing orientation as material escapes, the expanding plume can take on a spiral or vortex-like appearance. A bright center against a diffuse halo can make the display look especially strange.

It can still reach a rocket stage and its surrounding cloud high above the horizon after the ground below has fallen into darkness. From Oklahoma, observers saw the illuminated material against a dark sky, not necessarily the stage itself in sharp detail. Distance, perspective and low-light phone cameras can further exaggerate the brightness and shape.

How could a Florida launch be visible from Oklahoma?
A Falcon 9 upper stage travels far beyond its launch site. After the initial launch, it follows an orbital trajectory; a later burn or propellant-release event can occur after it has crossed a large part of the country or continued around Earth. The stage need not be overhead to be visible: a high-altitude, sunlit plume can be seen across a wide region.
That also explains why the Oklahoma reports came well after liftoff. The time of launch and the time of the later upper-stage display are different events. Futurism described the stage as completing a final orbital burn over the center of the country after circling the globe once (Futurism’s explainer); the exact operational details should be treated as reported interpretation rather than a direct mission statement.

Was it technically a UFO?
In the traditional sense, a UFO is an unidentified flying object. The spiral qualified while witnesses did not know what they were seeing. Once investigators connected the reports with the Falcon 9 event, MUFON classified its Oklahoma cases as identified flying objects. That conclusion applies to this specific sighting; it does not mean every UFO report has the same explanation.
Nor should this event be confused with a Starlink satellite train. A Starlink train usually looks like multiple points arranged in a line, while the 2022 reports described a bright center and surrounding spiral-like cloud. Oklahoma has had other SpaceX-related sky sightings, including a separate January 2024 report associated with a Starlink launch and return-to-Earth sequence (KOCO’s coverage of that different event).

How to check a similar sighting
- Pin down the date, time and location. Include the time zone; Oklahoma uses Central Standard Time in January.
- Check launch timing and trajectory. A launch may be relevant even if it happened well before the light appeared or far away.
- Look for reports from multiple places. A consistent sighting across a broad area can help distinguish a distant, high-altitude event from something local.
- Compare the shape. A line of separate points suggests a satellite train; a diffuse, expanding spiral is more consistent with a plume or venting event.
- Treat video as evidence of appearance, not identity. A phone recording can show what the light looked like, but it usually cannot establish what caused it by itself.
The Oklahoma spiral was an unusual sight, but the strongest available explanation is ordinary rocket activity: a Falcon 9 upper-stage event whose expanding, sunlit propellant cloud looked startling from the ground.
