Naked Labs’ home 3D body scanner was a real product, but it is no longer a current buying option. The company first unveiled the concept in April 2016, later launched a $1,395 consumer version in August 2018, and ended its official services on October 31, 2023. The system combined a full-length sensor-equipped mirror, a rotating scale and a mobile app to create a 3D surface model and estimate body-composition metrics.
Its appeal was straightforward: show changes in body shape, circumferences and estimated fat and lean mass over time instead of reducing fitness progress to a single number on a scale. Its limitations were equally important—high cost, careful scanning requirements, uncertain body-fat accuracy, sensitive cloud-stored data and eventual dependence on a service that shut down.
The problem Naked Labs tried to solve
Naked Labs was a Silicon Valley startup focused on 3D scanning, computer vision and quantified-self applications. Its flagship product was marketed as a home body scanner rather than an ordinary smart scale.

In its 2016 announcement, the company called the product the “Naked 3D Fitness Tracker” and offered it for a $499 preorder, with shipping anticipated for March 2017. The later commercial product announced on August 1, 2018 cost $1,395, a substantial increase from the early preorder price. That 2018 announcement also accompanied news of a $14 million Series A led by Founders Fund, with participation from NEA and other investors. Naked Labs’ 2016 announcement and 2018 launch announcement describe the company’s own positioning; claims such as “world’s first” should be understood as marketing language.
What the hardware included
The 2018 system consisted of three main parts:
- A full-length mirror containing three Intel RealSense 410-series depth sensors.
- A circular scale or turntable that rotated the user through a full 360 degrees.
- A companion mobile application for processing and viewing scans.
The mirror included a laser alignment system and an LED feedback ring to help position the scale and guide the user. Published specifications listed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, an onboard processor, memory and storage.
The frame measured approximately 62.5 inches high, 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep. The scale was approximately 2.5 inches high and 14.6 by 14.6 inches across. The published weight limit was 330 pounds. These were specifications for the 2018 product, not a guarantee that every prototype or early unit had identical hardware.

- Place the rotating scale in line with the mirror’s laser pointer.
- Stand on the scale and follow the posture instructions in the app.
- Remain still while the platform rotates through 360 degrees.
- Wait for the system to process the scan and upload the result.
- Review the model, measurements and historical comparisons in the app.
Naked Labs said the 2018 scan took about 15 seconds. Earlier 2016 material described a scan taking about 20 seconds, so the timing changed by product version. The physical rotation was quick, but processing and uploading could take longer.
The system did not “see” the body in the same way as a medical imaging device. It used depth sensors to build a three-dimensional surface representation while the person stood on the rotating platform. “Captures your entire body in 3D” is therefore best understood as a 360-degree scan intended to create a body-surface model—not as a promise that every body area would be perfectly captured in every posture, hairstyle or outfit.

What the app reported
The company described the app as providing:
- Weight
- Estimated body-fat percentage
- Estimated lean mass and fat mass
- Circumference measurements, including areas such as the waist, chest, thighs and calves
- A rotatable 3D visual model
- Heat-map-style comparisons showing changes in body geometry
- Progress charts and side-by-side scan comparisons
Those outputs were company-reported capabilities. A 3D surface model, a circumference measurement and a body-fat estimate are different things with different levels of reliability. The scanner could produce a useful visual record without its body-fat percentage being an exact measurement.
Accuracy: useful trend tool or precise analyzer?
The most important distinction is between repeatability and absolute accuracy.

Repeatability asks whether the device produces similar results when the same person scans under similar conditions. Absolute accuracy asks whether those results agree with a trusted reference method. A device can be repeatable enough to show a trend while still being consistently wrong about a person’s actual body-fat percentage.
Naked Labs’ marketing presented its measurements as accurate, but independent evidence raised concerns about the validity of its body-composition estimates. A study comparing 3D infrared scanner estimates with DXA reported poor overall validity for the Naked scanner relative to DXA in body-composition assessment. Read the study.
That does not make every output useless. Circumference measurements and visual comparisons may still help a user track change over time if scans are taken consistently. But the device was not a substitute for a clinically appropriate body-composition assessment, and a single body-fat percentage should not be treated as a diagnosis or a precise account of muscle and fat tissue.

For anyone who needs authoritative measurements—for example, because of a medical decision or a formal fitness assessment—a qualified clinic, DXA provider or accredited testing facility is more appropriate. Those options are less convenient and vary by location, but they address a different need.

A successful scan required more discipline than stepping on an ordinary scale. The user had to stay still, maintain the instructed posture and keep the hardware aligned.
Contemporary hands-on coverage from WIRED noted that Naked Labs recommended underwear or minimal, close-fitting clothing for better results. Loose or bulky clothes could change the apparent body surface. Hair could obscure the neck or upper back, and movement—including laughing or shifting position—could blur or disrupt the scan.
WIRED also reported that the scanner sometimes required multiple attempts when the subject moved, and that the scale could feel unstable on smooth hardwood when the user widened their stance. Other sources of variation could include poor alignment, sensor obstruction, a different room setup, inconsistent time of day, hydration, meals and recent exercise.
For trend tracking, the sensible routine would have been to scan under similar conditions: comparable clothing, posture, time of day, flooring and pre-exercise state. Otherwise, a heat map or body-fat change might reflect the scan setup rather than a genuine change in the body.

Privacy was central, not incidental
Naked Labs asked users to place an unusually intimate dataset inside a consumer technology ecosystem. The scanner captured a minimally clothed or unclothed body in three dimensions, processed the information through its app and relied on the company’s cloud service.
A 3D body model is more sensitive than an ordinary scale reading. The relevant questions were not just whether the device measured well, but also where scans were processed, how accounts were protected, whether data could be exported, how deletion worked and what would happen if the company stopped operating.
Contemporary coverage identified privacy concerns around a sensor-equipped mirror designed to capture naked-body scans. TechCrunch’s coverage provides that context.
According to a preserved shutdown notice reproduced by users, Naked Labs said customers could export measurement data as CSV files and export individual scans before the service ended. The notice also said the customer database would be deleted after November 1, 2023. That statement should be treated as the company’s shutdown communication preserved by users, not as a currently accessible support policy. See the preserved notice and discussion.
The service shutdown changes the practical answer
Naked Labs’ official website says its services ended on October 31, 2023. That means the original product should now be treated as discontinued, not as a currently supported home-fitness device. Check the company’s current status page.

A second-hand mirror or scale may still appear on resale marketplaces, but an old listing does not establish that the unit can activate, connect to the official app or upload scans. Buyers should not assume that an unopened product will work. Any offline or third-party revival would be unofficial and would need to be verified separately.
This is a broader lesson about connected hardware. The scanner’s value depended on more than its sensors: it also depended on the app, account system, cloud processing, storage and company support. When the service ended, a costly piece of specialized hardware became much less useful regardless of its physical condition.
Who the product made sense for
Historically, Naked Labs could appeal to a narrow group of users who wanted:
- Visual progress tracking beyond body weight.
- Automated circumference measurements.
- A 3D model that made changes easier to see.
- At-home monitoring without visiting a gym or clinic.
- A motivational tool for long-term fitness or weight-loss efforts.
It was a poor fit for users who needed clinical authority, minimal data collection, a low-cost device, guaranteed long-term support or operation without cloud infrastructure. It was also a poor fit for anyone unwilling to scan in minimal clothing or follow a consistent posture routine.
Frequent body scanning can also encourage compulsive checking or unhealthy fixation for some people, particularly those vulnerable to eating-disorder behaviors. More measurements do not automatically produce better health decisions.
What alternatives address the same needs?

Privacy-sensitive users should favor systems with transparent export and deletion controls, clear retention policies and, where possible, local processing. Anyone considering used Naked Labs hardware should regard it as unsupported specialty hardware rather than a normal smart-scale purchase.
Final verdict
Naked Labs was an ambitious early attempt to bring 3D body scanning into the home. Its mirror-and-turntable design could show body shape and circumference changes in a way ordinary scales could not. But its $1,395 price, demanding scan routine, uncertain body-fat validity, sensitive cloud-based data and eventual service shutdown were fundamental parts of the product story—not footnotes.
The fairest description is that Naked Labs was potentially useful as a consistent visual trend-tracking system, but not a medical analyzer. In 2026, its official consumer ecosystem is gone, so readers should study it as an important discontinued product rather than seek it out as a supported purchase.
