The thing directly below the power button on an iPhone 16 Pro Max is Apple’s Camera Control. It’s a dedicated camera interface—not a second power button, microphone, or defect. Apple calls the upper button the Side button.
How to identify it
Hold the iPhone with its screen facing you and look at the right edge. The upper button is the Side button; the larger control beneath it, closer to the lower-right corner, is Camera Control. Apple labels them separately in its iPhone 16 Pro Max hardware guide and dimensional drawing.
The Side button is used to lock or wake the phone and to access power and restart options. Camera Control is for the camera. The volume buttons and Action button are on the left edge; the USB-C port is on the bottom.

Camera Control can open the Camera app, take photos, and start video recording. It also gives you access to camera adjustments, including zoom, exposure, depth, camera selection, Photographic Styles, and tone. Why it can look like an antenna
Some earlier U.S. iPhone models had a visible side window associated with 5G mmWave hardware. That history helps explain why people sometimes call a small panel beneath the Side button an antenna. But on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the control in that location is Camera Control.
That does not mean the iPhone 16 Pro Max has no mmWave 5G. Apple lists mmWave bands n258, n260, and n261 for specified U.S. configurations (models A3083 and A3084). In its teardown, iFixit found that one mmWave antenna was replaced by Camera Control in the Pro models. iFixit inferred that the remaining antenna had been moved toward the top; that placement explanation is its inference, not an Apple-confirmed design explanation. The changed hardware is not evidence of a measured change in network performance.

Cellular hardware can differ by model and market. Camera Control is part of the iPhone 16 Pro Max design, while mmWave antenna hardware is not identical across all regional versions. Apple’s specifications and iFixit’s repair documentation describe those regional distinctions.

If it seems damaged or does not work
- Remove the case or other accessory temporarily to check whether it is covering or pressing on Camera Control.
- Check whether pressing the control opens Camera, and make sure iOS is up to date if its behavior seems abnormal.
- Keep the surrounding area clean, following Apple’s care guidance. Don’t insert a tool into the seam or try to pry the control out.
- If it is loose, sunken, cracked, or remains unresponsive, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro repair manual includes button and camera troubleshooting categories.
A seam or inset by itself is not proof of damage: Camera Control is an intentional, separately identified part of the phone. Disassembly is unnecessary for identifying it and can create additional repair risks.

If you mean an older iPhone
The answer depends on the model and exact location. On the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the control directly below the Side button is Camera Control. A similar-looking side window on some older U.S. iPhones may have been associated with mmWave antenna hardware. If the part you mean is elsewhere—near the top edge, on the left side, or along the bottom—it may be a different component.
