System32 is a core Windows system folder containing files Windows and many applications rely on. To open it, press Windows + R, enter %windir%System32, and press Enter. On many PCs this is C:WindowsSystem32, but using %windir% works even if Windows is installed elsewhere. Opening the folder is normally safe; deleting or casually changing its contents is not.
What does the System32 folder do?
System32 is part of the Windows installation, not a place for personal files or downloaded programs. It contains operating-system components such as executable utilities, dynamic-link libraries (DLLs), drivers, command-line tools, and files that support Windows features and applications. Examples include cmd.exe, regedit.exe, and taskmgr.exe.
Its exact contents vary with Windows version, system architecture, installed features, drivers, language packs, and updates. A familiar filename alone does not prove that a file is legitimate, and you should not run or alter unfamiliar files simply because they are in a system folder.

How to open System32
Use the Run dialog
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
%windir%System32. - Press Enter. The folder opens in File Explorer.
This is usually the quickest graphical method.
Use File Explorer
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar, type
%windir%System32, and press Enter.
You do not normally need to show hidden files to browse to System32. If it does not appear where you expected, use the environment-variable path rather than guessing a drive or folder name. File Explorer’s shortcut and navigation are documented by Microsoft Support.

Use Command Prompt
To open the folder in File Explorer from Command Prompt, run:
explorer "%windir%System32"To make it the current Command Prompt directory instead, run:
cd /d "%windir%System32"The /d option lets cd change drives as well as directories.

Use PowerShell
To open the folder in File Explorer:
Start-Process explorer.exe -ArgumentList "$env:windirSystem32"To change the current PowerShell location:
Set-Location "$env:windirSystem32"Where is System32?
The standard path is %windir%System32. %windir% refers to the Windows installation directory; C:Windows is common, but not guaranteed. Microsoft lists the system folder’s standard path as %windir%system32 in its known-folder documentation.
To check the Windows directory on your PC, run either command:
echo %windir%$env:windirUse the first in Command Prompt and the second in PowerShell. System32 is normally accessible in File Explorer; enabling hidden-file display is not required. You may be looking on the wrong drive, using a nonstandard Windows location, or seeing a path affected by 32-bit application redirection.

System32 vs. SysWOW64
The names are confusing on 64-bit Windows. System32 is the native system directory used by 64-bit applications; SysWOW64 holds 32-bit system files. WOW64 is the compatibility subsystem that lets 32-bit applications run on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft documents this arrangement and the related file-system redirection behavior.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program that requests %windir%System32 may be redirected to %windir%SysWOW64. As a result, two processes can appear to use the same path but reach different files. This is intentional: it prevents 32-bit and 64-bit components from being mixed in ways that could break applications.
What is Sysnative?
%windir%Sysnative is a special virtual alias that lets a 32-bit process on 64-bit Windows reach the native 64-bit system directory despite redirection. It is not an ordinary physical folder and is mainly relevant to scripts, installers, and deployment tools running as 32-bit processes. A 64-bit application should not expect it to work as a normal directory. For everyday File Explorer use, stick with %windir%System32 unless you have a specific redirection issue.

Do you need administrator access?
Usually not to open and browse the folder. Windows may require elevation or stronger permissions to change protected files, and a managed workplace computer may impose additional restrictions. Viewing a folder and modifying its contents are different operations.
If you see “Access denied” while trying to edit or delete something, do not disable protections or take ownership of System32 as a routine fix. The file may be protected, in use, or controlled by Windows. Use a supported repair or configuration method for the specific problem instead. Microsoft explains that Windows Resource Protection safeguards critical files, folders, and registry keys, with full access to protected resources restricted to TrustedInstaller.

No: the legitimate System32 folder is an essential part of Windows. The “delete System32” claim is a prank, not safe advice. Do not delete, empty, rename, or casually replace its files. Damaging them can prevent Windows from starting, break commands, drivers, services, applications, updates, or repairs, and may leave you needing recovery tools or a Windows reinstall.

Malware can imitate familiar Windows filenames, live in a different directory, or misuse a legitimate system utility. Do not judge a file by its name alone. Check its full path and digital signature or publisher, consider whether the process is expected, and scan a suspicious file with Windows Security or another reputable security tool. A file being somewhere under a directory named “System32” is not, by itself, proof of authenticity.
How to find or open a particular system tool
If you need one utility, you often do not need to browse System32. Search for it from Start, use the Run dialog, or launch it by name when appropriate—for example, cmd, regedit, or taskmgr. You can also check a known path in PowerShell:
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32notepad.exe"To look for a command-line executable, use Command Prompt:
where notepad.exeOr PowerShell:
Get-Command notepad.exeThese searches may return a copy elsewhere in the search path, so inspect the reported location rather than assuming it is the system copy. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit script may need the Sysnative alias to reach a 64-bit tool.
If a System32 file is missing or corrupted
Do not download a replacement DLL from an unfamiliar website. A file may need to match your Windows build, architecture, and installed components, and an untrusted replacement can introduce security or compatibility problems. First restart if the issue may be temporary and check Windows Update. For damaged Windows components, Microsoft’s built-in repair tools can help in some cases:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal (choose Run as administrator).
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow - If SFC cannot repair the files, run DISM against the running Windows installation:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart, then run
sfc /scannowagain if appropriate.
These are repair commands, not ways to open the folder, and they are not guaranteed to resolve every cause. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment and follow guidance for the specific error rather than applying commands meant for a running installation.
