For a regular YouTube video, use a 3840 × 2160 pixel thumbnail at a 16:9 aspect ratio. For a YouTube Short, use 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. YouTube lists 640 pixels as the minimum width for video thumbnails and the minimum height for Shorts. Export as JPG or PNG and stay within the upload limit for the device you use.
Recommended YouTube thumbnail dimensions
| Content | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 px | 16:9 | 640 px wide | YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail recommendation |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 px | 9:16 | 640 px high | Vertical recommendation |
| Podcast playlist | Not stated in the guidance summarized here | 1:1 | Not stated | Use a square canvas |
These are canvas dimensions, measured in pixels. They are not the same as a screen’s physical size or a video’s playback resolution. A thumbnail can be displayed much smaller than its source file; the larger source gives YouTube room to scale it for different surfaces.
Why 1280 × 720 is still mentioned
1280 × 720 is a real YouTube threshold, but it is not the current highest-resolution recommendation for an ordinary custom thumbnail. YouTube’s Thumbnail Test & Compare help page says that if any thumbnail in an experiment is below 720p (1280 × 720), the experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 480p, or 854 × 480.
That rule applies to the Test & Compare experiment. It explains why older tutorials call 1280 × 720 the “YouTube thumbnail size”: it was a common working canvas and remains the threshold for avoiding that experiment-specific downscale. If you can create and upload a 3840 × 2160 file within the applicable size limit, there is no reason to deliberately reduce it to 1280 × 720 first.

Aspect ratio, cropping and where thumbnails appear
Regular videos
YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard computer aspect ratio. A 3840 × 2160 canvas matches that shape, so it is the safest source for a conventional landscape video.
Shorts and vertical video
A Short’s recommended shape is 9:16. YouTube warns that for vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. If the video is vertical, design a dedicated 9:16 image rather than relying on a landscape thumbnail being cropped everywhere.
Podcast playlists
YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance specifies a 1:1 ratio for podcast playlists. The guidance summarized here does not state a separate pixel canvas for podcasts, so choose a square working file and follow the upload-size limit for your device.
File formats and upload-size limits
JPG and PNG are accepted image formats for custom thumbnails. The maximum upload size depends on both the content type and the device:

|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2 MB | 10 MB |
| Desktop | 50 MB | 50 MB |
The mobile 2 MB limit applies to video and Short thumbnails. Desktop uploads allow up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. A 3840 × 2160 PNG can be considerably larger than a JPG, so check the actual file size after export instead of assuming that the pixel dimensions guarantee acceptance.
How to create the correct thumbnail
- Choose the canvas for the content. Set 3840 × 2160 pixels for a regular video, or 2160 × 3840 pixels for a Short. Use a square canvas for a podcast playlist.
- Keep the important subject inside the canvas. Leave enough space around faces, logos and text for the way YouTube surfaces the image. For a vertical video, preview the design as a portrait image instead of placing essential details at the far edges of a landscape composition.
- Export as JPG or PNG. PNG is useful when you need crisp graphic edges or transparency in your editing workflow; JPG often produces a smaller upload for photographic artwork. The final file still has to meet the relevant size limit.
- Verify the file before uploading. Check the pixel dimensions in your editor or operating system, confirm the orientation, and inspect the file size in megabytes. Do not rely on a filename such as “4K” as proof of its actual dimensions.
- Upload through YouTube Studio. Select the custom-thumbnail control for the video, choose the verified file, and save the video. If you are using a Short, review how the thumbnail is represented on the surfaces where YouTube may substitute a 4:5 image.
Choosing a practical source size
| Situation | Best starting file | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape video with a normal desktop and mobile audience | 3840 × 2160, 16:9 | Matches the current recommendation and the standard landscape ratio |
| Short filmed vertically | 2160 × 3840, 9:16 | Matches the Short recommendation and avoids designing around a forced landscape crop |
| Thumbnail Test & Compare experiment | At least 1280 × 720 for landscape variants | Below that threshold, YouTube says experiment images are downscaled to 854 × 480 |
| Mobile upload with a large PNG | Keep the recommended dimensions, but reduce file weight or export JPG | Video thumbnails uploaded on mobile are limited to 2 MB |
There is no advantage in making a thumbnail canvas wider than the recommended dimensions merely to add a larger number. The useful goal is a sharp source in the correct shape that remains below the upload limit.
Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
YouTube rejects the file as too large
Check the upload route first. A video thumbnail uploaded from a phone is limited to 2 MB, while a desktop upload allows up to 50 MB. Re-export the image as JPG, reduce unnecessary metadata, or upload from a desktop. Podcast uploads have a separate 10 MB mobile allowance and the same 50 MB desktop allowance shown above.
An experiment image looks softer than expected
Check whether one of the Test & Compare thumbnails is below 1280 × 720. YouTube says that a sub-720p variant causes all experiment thumbnails to be downscaled to 854 × 480. Recreate every landscape variant at or above 1280 × 720, preferably using the current 3840 × 2160 canvas when the upload limit permits.

A Short shows an unexpected crop or a different image
Confirm that the artwork is 2160 × 3840 or another 9:16 composition. For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail can still be used in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
The image is the wrong orientation
Inspect the actual pixel dimensions, not just the editor’s preview. A file that is 3840 × 2160 is landscape even if its subject was photographed vertically; a Short needs a portrait canvas such as 2160 × 3840.
Text or a logo is clipped
Return to the original canvas and move essential elements away from the edges. Re-export at the intended dimensions rather than enlarging a finished, cropped file, which can make lettering visibly soft.
When a webpage is the source of a thumbnail
If the image you need is a webpage, a manual browser capture is possible: open the page, dismiss consent prompts and other overlays, set a viewport that matches the intended 16:9 or 9:16 composition, wait for the page content to load, capture the relevant area, and resize or crop the result in an image editor. Check the exported pixel dimensions and file size afterward. This approach is workable for occasional captures but becomes repetitive when pages contain cookie banners, newsletter popups, chat widgets, lazy-loaded images or bot checks.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. You can choose a viewport or device preset, capture a full page or one CSS-selected element, load lazy images, set a wait condition, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, block ads or other requests, provide cookies or headers, set a user agent, timezone or geolocation, use dark mode, resize the result and choose a cache TTL. For a thumbnail workflow, select an image format and a 16:9 or 9:16 viewport, then resize or crop only if your design requires it.

ScreenshotNeo accepts a consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For automated workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. You can also submit up to 100 URLs per bulk call, use asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, create signed links for public image tags, and query usage through the usage API. The service supports HTML/CSS-to-image, custom authorization, transparent backgrounds and caching with a TTL you choose.

Thumbnail resolution checklist
- Use 3840 × 2160 pixels and 16:9 for a regular video.
- Use 2160 × 3840 pixels and 9:16 for a Short.
- Keep regular-video files at least 640 pixels wide and Short files at least 640 pixels high.
- Export as JPG or PNG.
- Check the device-specific file-size limit before uploading.
- For Test & Compare, keep landscape variants at or above 1280 × 720 to avoid the stated 854 × 480 downscale.
- Expect different treatment for vertical thumbnails on Home, Explore and subscription pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does thumbnail resolution change the resolution of the video itself?
No. A thumbnail is a separate still image used to represent the video; changing its pixel dimensions does not change the uploaded video’s playback resolution.
What does YouTube’s 640-pixel minimum actually limit?
For a regular video it is a minimum width, and for a Short it is a minimum height. It is a floor for acceptance, not the recommended 3840 × 2160 or 2160 × 3840 canvas.
Can I use one thumbnail file for both a regular video and a Short?
You can upload an image to either type, but one file cannot be both 16:9 and 9:16 without cropping or adding empty space. Separate compositions preserve readable text and the intended subject.
