The Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA) is a built-in Windows feature that watches for certain problems with traditional desktop applications and may recommend a compatibility fix. It is not a separate program you need to install. Seeing a genuine Windows PCA message or its service is not, by itself, a sign of malware.
PCA can help with some older programs, but it cannot repair every failure or make outdated software secure. If a prompt appears, check which application it names, try the suggested fix only if you trust the program, and test the result.
What does the Program Compatibility Assistant do?
Windows includes application-compatibility components that check applications against known compatibility information. When Windows detects a symptom associated with a known issue, PCA may display an Application Help message or recommend a setting intended to help the program run. The compatibility engine can also apply fixes for known issues. Microsoft describes PCA as monitoring applications and offering recommended solutions when it detects potential compatibility problems (Microsoft’s Application Compatibility policy documentation).

Why did a PCA message appear?
Windows may offer help after an older installer fails to install or uninstall properly, or when a program refuses to run because it does not recognize the Windows version. It can also react to other known application symptoms and suggest trying compatibility settings. Microsoft documents examples including failed installation or uninstallation and applications that block themselves after detecting an unfamiliar Windows version (Program Compatibility Assistant scenarios).
A PCA message does not prove that Windows is broken, nor does it identify the cause of every crash. A failure might instead involve damaged files, a missing runtime or DLL, a driver, hardware limits, malware, a plug-in, permissions, or a discontinued online service. Compatibility settings are unlikely to solve those problems by themselves.
Is the Program Compatibility Assistant safe?
The genuine PCA is a Windows component. Its name, or the presence of the Program Compatibility Assistant Service, is not evidence of malware. However, a malicious website can imitate Windows warnings. Be wary of a message shown inside a browser that urges you to call a number, download a “repair” utility, or grant remote access. Close the page rather than following unsolicited support instructions.

A compatibility recommendation is not a security certification or a guarantee of success. Run software obtained from its publisher, scan unexpected installers, and do not grant administrator rights simply because a prompt or guide suggests it. Elevating an old or untrusted program can increase the damage it could cause.
PCA, compatibility mode, and the troubleshooter: what is the difference?

Compatibility mode is not an older copy of Windows running inside the application. A mode groups compatibility fixes—often called shims—that adapt selected behavior, such as how certain API calls are handled. It does not recreate an old operating system’s complete libraries, drivers, security model, or hardware support, and it cannot guarantee that the application will work (Microsoft’s explanation of custom compatibility modes).
What to do when PCA recommends a fix
- Check the application name. Confirm that it is the program or installer you intended to run. If you do not recognize it, do not approve changes just to dismiss the warning.
- Try the recommendation if the software is trusted. Note what Windows changes so you can undo it if needed.
- Test the part that failed. Do not stop at seeing the program open: check relevant tasks such as saving files, printing, network access, plug-ins, licensing, graphics, and updates.
- Keep the change only if it helps. If the result is worse, undo the compatibility setting or return the executable to its prior configuration.
If the recommendation does not help, look for an updated version and Windows guidance from the software publisher. Repair or update the application, and install any required runtime components only from Microsoft or the publisher. For genuinely obsolete software, consider a supported virtual machine or a replacement application rather than cycling through arbitrary compatibility settings.

How to set compatibility mode manually
For a traditional desktop program, you can try a per-program setting:

.exefile. If you start from a Start-menu shortcut, right-click it and choose Open file location if that option is available; follow the shortcut to the executable if necessary. - Right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose an older Windows version only when the publisher recommends it or a controlled test supports it.
- Select Apply, then OK, and launch the program.
- Test the functions you rely on. To reverse the change, return to the same tab, clear the compatibility-mode option, and apply it.
The exact route to an executable can vary, and a shortcut’s Properties window may not expose the right controls. The Compatibility tab is a manual setting, not PCA. Microsoft’s guidance cautions that selecting fixes manually is more appropriate for experienced users than relying on the troubleshooter to recommend one (PCA scenarios and guidance).
A setting that fixes startup might disrupt printing, networking, licensing, graphics, updates, or where files are saved. Record the original state and change one thing at a time. Treat Run this program as an administrator as a targeted troubleshooting step, not a default compatibility fix: elevated access can let an application modify protected locations and increases the consequences if it is compromised.

When compatibility mode probably will not help
Compatibility mode is most promising for a traditional desktop program that worked on an older Windows release and has a known Windows-version or legacy-behavior issue. It is a poor first choice when the underlying requirement is missing or no longer available. In particular, it cannot:
- Make an incompatible hardware driver work.
- Supply a missing runtime, library, or removed Windows component.
- Make 16-bit software run natively on 64-bit Windows. Windows may offer a 16-bit application support control panel rather than running the application directly.
- Restore a discontinued server, bypass modern licensing or DRM, or fix a broken plug-in.
- Guarantee compatibility with Windows 10, Windows 11, or a future release merely because a checkbox is available.
If the Compatibility tab is missing, you may be viewing a shortcut rather than the executable. Packaged or Store applications, restricted installation folders, and policy controls can also limit the available options.

Can you disable PCA?
Administrators can turn it off through policy on specified Windows editions and builds. The Group Policy setting is Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Application Compatibility > Turn off Program Compatibility Assistant. Enabling that policy turns PCA off; leaving it disabled or not configured leaves PCA on. Microsoft documents the policy scope for specified Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT editions and Windows versions in its Application Compatibility policy reference.

The corresponding policy registry location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsAppCompat, with a DisablePCA value. This is an administrative control, not a recommended routine tweak. Avoid editing the registry simply to silence a prompt; in a managed computer, ask the administrator before changing policy.
Most home users should leave PCA enabled. Turning it off does not fix an application or improve its compatibility, and it removes potentially useful recommendations. An organization may disable it when it manages compatibility centrally, needs to suppress repeated prompts during a controlled deployment, or has a specific policy requirement. That is an operational choice, not a general Windows performance optimization.
What if the PCA service is stopped?
If the Program Compatibility Assistant Service is stopped or disabled, PCA may not work properly and its usual prompts or recommendations may not appear. The Diagnostic Policy Service is also a documented dependency. Stopping either service is not a general fix for an application that will not run. Do not change service startup settings casually; if a work or school device has them disabled by policy, contact its administrator.

Windows 10 support ended—what PCA does not change
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update, and regular support ended on October 14, 2025 (Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support announcement). An existing installation may continue to run applications, but PCA does not extend Windows support, provide security updates, or make unsupported software safe. Any continuing coverage, such as an applicable Extended Security Updates arrangement, is separate and depends on the specific situation.
For a Windows 10 PC still in use, check the device’s support and security-update status and consider an eligible move to Windows 11 or another supported option. If a legacy application is the reason to keep an older environment, plan for its security and isolation rather than treating a successful compatibility prompt as proof that the whole computer is supported. Options for software that remains incompatible
- Update it: Get a current release or installer from the publisher and follow its Windows guidance.
- Repair or replace it: If the publisher has abandoned the application or it relies on unsafe legacy components, a supported replacement may be the more reliable choice.
- Use a virtual machine when appropriate: For software that truly requires an older operating system, use a supported, appropriately licensed and secured virtualized environment rather than assuming compatibility mode provides a complete old system.
- Plan centrally in organizations: IT departments can assess application compatibility before deployment and use Microsoft’s Compatibility Administrator to create custom fixes or compatibility databases. It is an enterprise and developer tool, not a consumer repair utility (Compatibility Administrator User’s Guide).
