Mapbox API is not one endpoint. It is a collection of HTTPS services and software development kits for adding maps, place search and geocoding, routing, and geospatial data features to applications. The main API groups are Maps, Navigation, Search, and Accounts. You can call web services directly or use a client SDK to render and interact with maps.

What does the Mapbox API do?

Mapbox’s web services let software access Mapbox tools programmatically. Depending on the service, an application can request map tiles or a static image, find a place from an address, reverse-geocode coordinates, search for points of interest, calculate a route, or manage Mapbox resources.

“Mapbox API” is therefore an umbrella term. Each product has its own endpoint, inputs, outputs, usage measure, and limits. Identify the particular task before choosing an API: displaying a map is different from finding an address or calculating a route.

How is the platform organized?

Maps: tiles, images, and map data

The Maps service includes the Vector Tiles, Raster Tiles, Static Images, Static Tiles, Uploads, and Tilequery APIs. Tiles supply the geographic building blocks of maps; static-image services return map images rather than an interactive map. Uploads lets you host data, while Tilequery supports querying features in tiles.

For an interactive map, a browser or mobile application usually combines map data with a rendering SDK. For a map image that does not need pan, zoom, or other client-side interaction, a static map endpoint may be a better fit.

Navigation: routes and travel analysis

Navigation services include the Directions API for turn-by-turn routing and related services for travel analysis. The Isochrone API can support reachability analysis, Map Matching relates location traces to roads, Matrix calculates travel costs between sets of points, and Optimization addresses route ordering. These are separate workloads, not interchangeable ways to display a map; check the selected endpoint’s documentation and limits when designing a routing system.

Search: geocoding and places

Search products cover forward geocoding (turning a text query such as an address into geographic results), reverse geocoding (looking up information for coordinates), and point-of-interest discovery. Mapbox distinguishes Search Box from Temporary and Permanent Geocoding products. If an application needs to keep geocoding results, choose the product with the appropriate storage terms rather than assuming every result can be retained.

Accounts and data tools

Accounts APIs support management of tokens and Mapbox resources. The broader Mapbox toolset also includes Studio, Styles, Datasets, and Tiling services for designing map styles and preparing hosted geographic data. These tools complement the APIs; they are not all endpoints for rendering a map in an application.

Is Mapbox an API or an SDK?

Both terms apply, but they mean different integration layers. The APIs are web services, generally accessed over HTTPS. SDKs are libraries for integrating Mapbox functionality into an application, including rendering maps and handling interaction on supported platforms.

Approach Best suited to What it does
Direct HTTPS API call Server-side processing, a focused lookup, or a static result Your code sends a request to a particular service and handles its response.
Mapbox GL JS Interactive maps in a web application A browser-side library renders a map and supports client interaction.
Maps SDK for iOS or Android Native mobile applications A platform SDK integrates map rendering and interaction into the mobile app.

Choose based on where the feature runs, whether it needs interactive rendering, and whether the application needs mobile or offline capabilities. A REST request that returns coordinates is not a substitute for a map renderer; an SDK-rendered map does not by itself determine which search or routing service your product needs.

How do I choose the right Mapbox service?

  1. For an interactive web map: use Mapbox GL JS with the appropriate Maps services for the map data and style.
  2. For a native mobile map: evaluate the Maps SDK for the target platform, including any offline requirements.
  3. For a non-interactive map graphic: consider Static Images or Static Tiles rather than loading a full interactive client map.
  4. For an address or place lookup: select the relevant Search product, then check whether results may be stored for your use case.
  5. For directions or travel analysis: select the Navigation endpoint that matches the calculation, and size expected traffic against that endpoint’s rate limit.
  6. For hosted custom geographic data: review Uploads, Datasets, Styles, and Tiling options as appropriate.

Keep the unit of use in mind from the start. A user-visible map load, a directions request, a search request, and a mobile monthly active user are different billable events. Estimate them separately rather than treating all Mapbox usage as one generic API-call count.

Is Mapbox API free?

Mapbox’s pricing model generally provides a free tier for products, followed by product-specific metered charges. The free allowance and the unit being metered vary by product. The following figures are the values listed on Mapbox’s pricing page as accessed in 2026; they are not a guarantee of future rates.

These examples show why “Is Mapbox free?” has no single answer: it depends on the product, usage volume, and—in the Search Box example—whether preview or standard pricing applies. Confirm the current price and terms for your selected product before committing a budget. Mapbox’s pricing documentation also notes that older Navigation SDK versions can have different billing combinations, so verify the version as well as the endpoint.

What are Mapbox API rate limits?

Rate limits are endpoint-specific request ceilings, distinct from pricing allowances. The Mapbox API overview lists a limit of 1,000 requests per minute for the Geocoding API and 300 requests per minute for the Directions API. These are not universal Mapbox limits: another endpoint or product version may have a different limit.

For production planning, check the current documentation for the exact endpoint and version you will use. Compare its per-minute limit with peak traffic—not just a monthly average—and account for the fact that a feature may call several services. For example, a user journey involving map rendering, place lookup, and directions can produce usage in multiple product categories.

What to check before launch

  • Endpoint and version: confirm the exact API or SDK and version; pricing and limits are product-specific.
  • Usage unit: forecast map loads, requests, sessions, or monthly active users as applicable.
  • Data retention: verify the storage rules for the geocoding product you select.
  • Platform and rendering: distinguish browser maps, native mobile maps, static images, and server-side API work.
  • Peak request rate: compare burst traffic with the endpoint’s current rate limit.
  • Offline and style needs: check whether the intended SDK and data workflow support the app’s requirements.
  • Budget drift: monitor each product’s usage separately, because a single application can consume several differently metered Mapbox services.

If your workflow also needs website screenshots

Mapbox handles mapping and geospatial services, not general website screenshots. If a developer workflow also needs screenshots of web pages, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server. Its single-request example captures a page as an image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Common planning mistakes

Assuming every map feature is one API call

Map rendering, search, and routing are separate products with separate usage measures. Map the user journey to the services it actually invokes, then estimate each category on its own.

Choosing a geocoder without checking retention

Temporary and Permanent Geocoding are distinct product choices. If your application stores results, check the applicable product terms before implementation rather than treating geocoding output as automatically retainable.

Using a monthly free allowance as a rate limit

A monthly pricing tier describes billing volume; a per-minute rate limit describes request throughput. Check both for the endpoint you plan to use.

Budgeting from an old SDK version or price page

Mapbox pricing and limits can change, and older Navigation SDK versions can use different billing combinations. Recheck current documentation for the specific product version before launch or a budget commitment.
