All four iPhone 12 models have an IP68 rating under IEC 60529. Apple’s stated limit is submersion up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes in controlled laboratory conditions. That makes the phone water-resistant—not permanently waterproof or safe to take swimming—and Apple’s standard U.S. warranty excludes damage caused by liquid contact.
What does IP68 mean?
“IP” stands for ingress protection, a classification for how well an enclosure resists solids and water. In IP68, the first digit, 6, indicates dust-tight protection under the relevant test. The second digit, 8, indicates protection against immersion under conditions set by the manufacturer and testing standard. The number does not specify one universal depth or duration for every IP68 product; see the IEC explanation of IP ratings.
For the iPhone 12 family, Apple states the specific condition: up to 6 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, tested in controlled laboratory conditions. This is a test limit, not a recommended way to use the phone or a guarantee that any individual iPhone will survive every immersion.

Which iPhone 12 models are IP68-rated?
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
Apple gives all four the same IP68 classification and 6-meter/30-minute specification; the Pro models do not have a higher water-resistance rating. Apple’s support page lists the models and conditions.

Can an iPhone 12 get wet?
The rating is intended to help protect against accidental exposure, such as ordinary rain, splashes, or a brief spill. Apple also lists common accidental spills such as coffee, tea, juice, beer, and fizzy drinks. Still, no rating makes every wet-phone incident harmless. Wipe up spills promptly, and do not treat the phone as designed for routine water exposure.

| Pool or ocean water | Do not assume IP68 makes this safe. Chlorine, salt, movement, pressure, and other conditions differ from controlled testing. |
Apple advises avoiding intentional submersion, swimming or bathing, water skiing, wakeboarding, surfing, jet skiing, saunas, steam rooms, and extremely humid conditions. Moving water, heat, temperature changes, soap, and impacts can all make real-world exposure unlike the laboratory test. Apple also advises minimizing contact with substances such as detergent, acidic liquids, sunscreen, lotions, oil, solvents, and hair dye. The rating is not a blanket guarantee against chemicals or every kind of liquid.

Does the iPhone 12 stay water-resistant over time?
No rating should be assumed to last forever. Apple says splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and may decrease through normal wear. A drop, cracked glass, damaged enclosure, prior opening, or repair can also mean the phone no longer resembles the condition tested when new. That does not mean every repair automatically removes resistance; it means you should not assume a damaged or repaired phone retains its original factory performance.

An IP rating describes tested resistance; it does not determine warranty coverage. Apple’s standard U.S. iOS warranty excludes damage caused by liquid contact. The warranty document cited here is for the United States; consumer-law rights and other coverage terms can vary by country and circumstances. The 6-meter/30-minute rating does not itself require Apple to repair a liquid-damaged phone for free.

What to do if your iPhone 12 gets wet
- Disconnect cables and accessories. If the phone is visibly wet, do not charge it.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth. Hold the phone with the charging port facing down so excess liquid can drain.
- Leave it in a dry, well-ventilated place. Do not use external heat or compressed air, and do not put objects into the port.
- Do not put the phone in rice. Wait until the phone and connector are dry before trying a cable connection.
- If it will not power on, charge, connect, or work normally after drying, seek service.
Apple’s guidance is clear that you should not attempt to charge a wet iPhone. If the phone contacted something other than clean water, follow Apple’s current cleaning and drying instructions rather than assuming the IP rating covers the substance.
