A screenshot is a picture of what is visible on a screen. A snapshot is a saved record of something’s state, and what that state contains depends on the product: it might be screen content, selected system data, or a virtual device’s settings and application state. The terms sometimes overlap, so check what a feature captures and whether its saved result is meant to be viewed, analyzed, or restored.
What a screenshot captures
A screenshot is a static visual record of a screen or a selected portion of it. It records appearance: the pixels shown at the time of capture. It does not, by itself, preserve the underlying application, operating system, or data in a form that lets you resume work from that exact state.
The capture can include the whole screen or a selected area, window, or application. Microsoft’s Windows Snipping Tool documentation describes freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen capture modes. Those choices change how much of the display appears in the resulting image, not what kind of information the image contains. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Because it is an image, a screenshot is useful when the goal is to show someone what appeared on screen: for example, to document an interface, explain an error message, or share a visual reference. An image can be viewed or analyzed, but it is not the same as a restorable copy of the system that produced it.

What “snapshot” means
Unlike screenshot, snapshot does not have one universal computing definition. It generally means a record of something’s state at a particular point, but the “something” might be a screen, a running system, a virtual device, or a set of data. A snapshot may be read-only, useful for analysis, or designed to support a return to a previous state; the name alone does not tell you which.
The NIST CSRC glossary, citing NIST SP 800-125, defines a snapshot in that source’s context as “A record of the state of a running image, generally captured as the differences between an image and the current state.” That is a specialized definition, not a rule that every product uses. Other official documentation shows how widely the term can vary:
- Windows Tool Help: Microsoft describes a snapshot as a read-only copy of the current state of one or more lists in system memory: processes, threads, modules, and heaps. This is information for system-level inspection, not a picture of the desktop. See Microsoft’s Tool Help documentation.
- Android Virtual Device: Android Studio says an emulator snapshot preserves virtual-device state, including OS settings, application state, and user data, so the user can return to that saved device state. See Android Studio’s snapshot documentation.
- Snap packages: Canonical defines a snapd snapshot as a copy of user, system, and configuration data for one or more snaps. Its documented uses include backup, revert, and restore operations. See Canonical’s Snap glossary.
- Windows Recall: Microsoft uses “snapshots” for periodic captures of screen content when it differs from the previous snapshot. Recall arranges captured items in a timeline and stores and analyzes them locally on the PC. This is a product-specific use of the word for screen content, not the same thing as an Android emulator snapshot. See Microsoft’s Recall documentation.

The table describes the usual distinction, not a naming standard. A particular product’s documentation takes precedence over the general terms.

Why the words sometimes overlap
Some consumer-facing software uses snapshot to describe an ordinary screen capture. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool page, for example, uses the word in its screen-capture description while also documenting screenshot capture modes. Meanwhile, Windows Tool Help, Android Studio, Canonical, and Recall use snapshot for different kinds of saved records or state. So it is too absolute to say that every screenshot is called a snapshot—or that a snapshot always means a restorable backup.

The important details are the object being captured, the information included, and what you can do with the saved result.
How to tell what a product’s snapshot contains
- Identify the captured object. Does the feature record pixels on a display, a process or memory list, a virtual machine or device, or files and configuration data?
- Check which state is included. Look for explicit mention of application data, settings, user data, system state, or only visible screen content. Do not infer hidden state from a visual preview.
- Find the intended use. Documentation may say that an item is for viewing, analysis, returning to a saved session, or backup and restoration. These purposes are not interchangeable.
- Verify whether the action is reversible. If you need to roll back or resume, confirm that the feature supports that operation and learn what it restores. A saved record is not automatically a recovery point.
- Use the feature’s own documentation. A product may use “snapshot” differently from another product in the same operating system or category.
This check is especially useful before relying on a snapshot as a backup. Confirm whether it includes the data you care about and whether the product documents a restore or revert operation; otherwise, it may be useful only for inspection or reference.

If you need an image of a website
If your aim is to preserve how a web page looks, you need a screenshot or a screenshot tool—not a system snapshot merely because an interface uses that label. For a manual capture, open the page in a browser, bring the content you want into view, and use the operating system’s screen-capture feature. A manual screen capture records what is visible in the selected area; it does not preserve the page as an interactive site or capture hidden application state.
For an automated website image, a screenshot API can accept a URL and return an image. That is still a visual capture, not a restorable snapshot of the server or browser environment. Be mindful that a page may contain content that loads after the initial view, overlays such as consent prompts, or elements outside the visible viewport. The capture method’s controls determine what gets included.

Common points of confusion
“The snapshot looks like a picture, so is it just a screenshot?”
Not necessarily. A preview may display an image of a saved item while the underlying feature also stores state or metadata. Read what the product says is preserved; appearance in a preview does not establish the full contents.
“It says snapshot, so can I roll back?”
Only if that particular feature supports returning to or restoring the saved state. Android Studio documents return to a saved virtual-device state, and Canonical describes backup, revert, and restore uses for snapd snapshots. Those examples do not establish the same capability for every product’s snapshot feature.
“Will a screenshot show everything the app knows?”
No. A screenshot shows visual content that appears in its captured area. It is not a dump of an app’s memory, files, or settings. If you need those, use a documented export, backup, diagnostic, or snapshot feature designed to include them.
FAQ
Can a screenshot include an entire web page?
It can, if the capture tool supports full-page capture; an ordinary screen selection only records the portion included in the capture. Check the tool’s documentation for its available capture modes.
Does a snapshot always capture the exact same thing when repeated?
Not necessarily. Some features capture only when a relevant state changes, while others save a requested system, device, or data state. The product’s trigger and capture rules determine what a new snapshot contains.
Is a screenshot itself a backup?
It can serve as a visual reference, but it does not substitute for a backup of the underlying files, settings, or application state. Use a backup method that explicitly covers the data you need to recover.
