Windows’ built-in screenshot program is Snipping Tool. For a quick selected-area screenshot, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a snip mode, and select what you want to capture. If you need a file rather than a clipboard image, use Snipping Tool’s save control or, on supported keyboards, press Windows+PrtScn to save a full-screen capture.
Which screenshot program comes with Windows?
Snipping Tool is the built-in Windows app for capturing all or part of your screen. Microsoft’s current instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, though some functions and shortcut behavior depend on the Windows version, device, and settings. The app offers freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen still-image captures, along with video snips in supported versions. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe the available modes and workflow.
It helps to distinguish a screenshot copied to the clipboard from one saved as an image file. A clipboard capture is ready to paste into another app; it is not necessarily stored in your Pictures folder. Snipping Tool lets you edit and save a capture, while Windows+PrtScn can save a full-screen image directly to Pictures > Screenshots when that shortcut is supported.
Choose a shortcut or capture method
| What you need | Built-in route | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a selected region | Windows+Shift+S | Opens the screen-snipping overlay. Select an area; the capture is available in Snipping Tool and on the clipboard. |
| Capture the active window | Alt+PrtScn | Copies the active window’s screenshot to the clipboard. |
| Capture the whole screen to a file | Windows+PrtScn, where supported | Saves a screenshot in Pictures > Screenshots. |
| Capture a window or full screen using a mode picker | Open Snipping Tool and choose Window or Full screen | Window mode lets you select a window; full-screen mode captures the screen. |
| Record a selected screen area | Snipping Tool’s Record mode or Windows+Shift+R, in supported versions | Creates a video snip rather than a still image. |
Microsoft documents Windows+Shift+S and Alt+PrtScn in its Windows keyboard shortcuts reference. The exact response to the Print Screen key can vary: it may copy a capture, or Windows may be configured to open screen snipping instead.

How to capture part of the screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture overlay appears.
- Choose the appropriate capture shape or mode from the overlay. Use a rectangle for a standard crop, or choose a different available mode when you need a freeform, window, or full-screen capture.
- Select the area or window. For a rectangular snip, click and drag over the portion of the screen you want.
- Open the resulting capture in Snipping Tool if you want to make changes, then use the app’s save control to choose a filename and destination. If you only need to paste it elsewhere, switch to the destination app and press Ctrl+V.
This route is useful when the screenshot should show only one part of the display, rather than the entire desktop. Microsoft’s instructions for copying window or screen contents also explain the clipboard and editing workflow.
Capture a window or the entire screen
Capture just the active window
Click the window you want so it is active, then press Alt+PrtScn. This copies an image of that active window to the clipboard; paste it into an image editor, document, or message with Ctrl+V. If you want to save it as a file, paste it into an app that can save images and use that app’s save command.

Capture a window from Snipping Tool
Open Snipping Tool, choose Window mode, and select the window to capture. This is a convenient option when you want to use the app’s capture and save workflow rather than paste a clipboard image. The names and controls displayed can differ slightly between Windows versions.
Capture the full screen
For a direct full-screen file capture, press Windows+PrtScn if your keyboard and Windows configuration support it. Microsoft directs users to look in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots for these captures. You can also open Snipping Tool and select Full screen mode; Microsoft describes that mode as capturing the screen immediately.

Where screenshots go, and how to save them
The destination depends on the method. Print Screen and Alt+PrtScn copy captures to the clipboard, so use Ctrl+V in another app to see or save the image. Snipping Tool provides a save control for choosing a filename and location. For captures made with Windows+PrtScn, check Pictures > Screenshots in File Explorer. Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance describes that folder and the hardware-dependent shortcut alternatives.
Snipping Tool’s save behavior can be affected by its settings; Microsoft documents automatic save behavior and a setting to change it. If you need to know exactly where a capture went, use the app’s save control and select a location you can find again rather than relying on an assumed default.

Can Snipping Tool record video?
In versions that include video snips, open Snipping Tool, choose Record, select New, and drag to mark a rectangular recording area. Start and stop the recording with the on-screen controls; the resulting clip can be saved or opened in Clipchamp. Microsoft also documents Windows+Shift+R as a shortcut for this workflow. Video capture is distinct from a still screenshot, and its availability depends on the Snipping Tool version on your device. See Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool steps for the controls.
Settings, hardware, and feature availability
- Print Screen behavior: Depending on Windows settings, pressing PrtScn may open screen snipping rather than simply copying a full-screen image. Check the current keyboard or accessibility settings if the key behaves differently than expected.
- Keyboards without PrtScn: Some compact or laptop keyboards place the function behind an Fn combination or omit the key. Microsoft lists Fn+Windows+Space as a possible alternative for devices without a Print Screen key; support depends on the hardware.
- Copilot+ PC-only tools: Microsoft marks Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as available only on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Do not expect those functions on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.
- Version differences: Microsoft’s Snipping Tool help applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not every feature is available on every device or installation. The cited help pages do not establish a specific publication date or Windows build number for these instructions.
Common problems and fixes
Windows+Shift+S does nothing
Confirm that you are pressing the Windows key, Shift, and S together. If no overlay appears, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and start a capture there. Shortcuts can vary with device settings, so using the app directly is a useful alternative while checking the keyboard configuration.

PrtScn opens the wrong thing, or seems not to work
The Print Screen key’s assigned behavior can be configured, and some keyboards require an Fn combination. Try Windows+Shift+S for the capture overlay, or use Snipping Tool’s controls. If the device has no PrtScn key, check whether its manufacturer supports Fn+Windows+Space as a substitute.
The screenshot is not in Pictures
If you used Print Screen or Alt+PrtScn, the image may only be on the clipboard. Paste it into an app with Ctrl+V. If you used Snipping Tool, open the capture and save it explicitly. Pictures > Screenshots is the destination associated with Windows+PrtScn captures, not every screenshot method.
The capture contains more than the window I wanted
Alt+PrtScn captures the active window, so first click the intended window to make it active. Alternatively, use Snipping Tool’s Window mode and select the target window, or use Windows+Shift+S to draw a crop around only the required content.
A feature or control shown in a guide is missing
Available Snipping Tool features can depend on the installed version and device. In particular, Microsoft limits Perfect Screenshot and Color picker to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. For other controls, open the current app on your device and use the modes it actually offers.
Or skip the browser setup
Snipping Tool captures what is on your Windows display. If what you need instead is a screenshot of a website URL—for example, for a site-monitoring workflow, a report, or an AI agent—you can request one from ScreenshotNeo’s website screenshot API. It is not a way to capture your Windows desktop. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the example below requests a website capture and saves the response as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
