Intel estimates that Lunar Lake’s Skymont E-core IPC is on par with Raptor Cove IPC for LLC/Ring workloads—but only under specific, fixed-frequency test conditions. Intel’s larger percentage gains use a different baseline: earlier low-power Crestmont E-cores.
What is Skymont IPC equivalent to?
The short answer is Raptor Cove, according to Intel’s estimate for LLC/Ring workloads. Intel limits that comparison to general, non-vector-heavy workloads at fixed frequency, with similar memory and fabric. It is not a claim that Skymont and Raptor Cove perform identically in every workload or system.
Intel published the comparison in its Computex 2024 Performance Index. The figures are Intel internal projections or estimates dated May 13, 2024, with a stated margin of error of ±10%; they are not independent benchmark results.

IPC means instructions per cycle: a measure of how much work a core completes per clock cycle. It is not the same as clock speed, total processor performance, or application runtime. The Skymont-to-Raptor Cove statement is specifically an IPC estimate, not a guarantee that a Skymont-equipped processor will match a Raptor Cove-equipped processor in every task.
#1 Best Overall
- Next‑Gen Platform Support: Compatible with Intel 800 Series Chipset‑based motherboards with LGA1851 Socket enabling PCIe 5.0/4.0 and high‑speed DDR5 memory (up to 7200 MT/s).
- High‑Performance Core Configuration: Features up to 24 cores (8 P‑cores + 16 E‑cores) for demanding gaming and creator
- Ultra‑Fast Boost Clocks: Reaches up to 5.5 GHz max turbo frequency for top‑tier responsiveness and performance
- Built for Enthusiasts: Unlocked for performance tuning when paired with Intel Z‑series chipsets, making it ideal for overclockers and power users.
- Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
Intel says the estimate uses estimated SPEC CPU 2017 rate base components and GCC 12.1-O2 on Linux. Its stated conditions include fixed frequency, similar memory and fabric, and general workloads that are not vector-heavy. The LLC/Ring qualifier is part of the claim; it should not be dropped when describing the result.
Why Intel’s 1.38x and 1.68x figures use a different comparison
Intel also estimates Skymont’s IPC against the previous generation of low-power E-cores, codenamed Crestmont. That comparison reports:
Rank #2
- Get ultra-efficient with Intel Core Ultra desktop processors that improve both performance and efficiency so your PC can run cooler, quieter, and quicker.
- Core and Threads 24 cores (8 P-cores plus 16 E-cores) and 24 threads. Integrated Intel Graphics included
- Performance Hybrid Architecture Integrates two core microarchitectures, prioritizing and distributing workloads to optimize performance
- Performance Unlocked Up to 5.7 GHz unlocked. 40MB Cache
- Compatibility Compatible with Intel 800 series chipset-based motherboards
- 1.38x integer IPC versus Crestmont.
- 1.68x floating-point IPC versus Crestmont.
These are May 2024 Intel estimates with a stated ±10% margin of error, based on estimated SPEC CPU 2017 rate base metrics and GCC 12.1-O2 Linux at fixed frequency. They are generational comparisons against Crestmont—not percentages by which Skymont exceeds Raptor Cove.
How to read the equivalence claim
- Skymont vs. Raptor Cove: Intel says IPC is on par for LLC/Ring workloads under the stated, fixed-frequency conditions.
- Skymont vs. Crestmont: Intel estimates 1.38x integer and 1.68x floating-point IPC for Lunar Lake Skymont.
- Application performance: Neither comparison establishes universal equivalence in real applications or across processor configurations.
Intel’s Skymont instruction-throughput and latency documentation and its Crestmont and Redwood Cove documentation provide microarchitecture reference data. They do not provide a universal IPC conversion or establish application-level equivalence.
