“Patreon on YouTube” usually means a YouTube creator uses Patreon as a separate place for fans to join paid memberships, access bonus material, or buy digital products. It is not a built-in YouTube feature, and following a channel does not sign you up for Patreon. YouTube has its own paid option, called Channel Memberships; Patreon and YouTube memberships are separate services with different accounts, benefits, and billing.
What is Patreon?
Patreon is a platform where creators can build a direct relationship with their fans and earn support through memberships and purchases. Depending on the creator’s setup, a fan may join for free, pay for a recurring membership, or buy a one-time digital item. Creators set their own prices, posts, and promised benefits within the platform’s rules. Patreon is therefore more than a tip jar: a payment may be tied to access to content, a community, or a product. Patreon’s overview explains its creator and fan model.
What does “Patreon on YouTube” mean?
Most often, a creator publishes regular videos on YouTube and directs interested viewers to a Patreon page for additional support or benefits. The creator might share the link in a video description, channel profile, pinned comment, or spoken call to action. The viewer leaves YouTube, opens the creator’s Patreon page, reviews the offer, and joins or buys there.

- YouTube subscription: Free, and a way to follow a channel.
- YouTube Channel Membership: A paid YouTube feature with channel-specific perks.
- Patreon membership: A separate free or paid membership managed on Patreon, with benefits chosen by the creator.
These are not interchangeable. A YouTube subscription does not create a Patreon membership, and paying on Patreon does not automatically make you a YouTube channel member. Patreon is usually reached through an external link rather than a built-in YouTube membership button.

How Patreon works for a YouTube creator
- Create a Patreon page. The creator decides whether to offer free memberships, paid tiers, one-time products, or a mix.
- Set the benefits and terms. Possible offers include early access, bonus video or audio, behind-the-scenes posts, project files, polls, livestreams, downloadable material, or access to a community such as Discord.
- Promote the page on YouTube. Viewers choose whether to follow the link and support the creator.
- Patreon handles membership access. Members see content and instructions according to the creator’s settings and their payment status.
- Deliver the promised benefits. The creator may post on Patreon or use another service to provide a download, livestream, or community access.
Patreon says creators can start without an upfront platform charge and can offer memberships as well as one-time purchases. That does not mean transactions are free of fees; creator costs are explained below. See Patreon’s current pricing FAQ.
What do Patreon supporters get?
There is no universal Patreon package. Each creator decides what a tier includes, and one creator’s entry-level membership may differ substantially from another’s. Read the individual offer rather than assuming that a payment unlocks every video, archive item, or personal interaction.
Before joining, check:
- Whether the charge is monthly, annual, or a one-time purchase.
- Exactly which posts, downloads, events, or community spaces are included.
- Whether joining gives access to older posts or only new material.
- Where each benefit is delivered: Patreon, YouTube, Discord, email, or another service.
- How often the creator expects to publish, and whether a stated benefit is guaranteed or occasional.
- Whether a benefit has limits, such as a fixed number of commissions or event places.
- How to cancel and what the applicable billing and refund terms say.
“Early access” may mean a video appears on Patreon before its public YouTube release; it does not necessarily mean the video is exclusive. Similarly, a creator may advertise a bonus video without promising a particular posting frequency. When the offer is unclear, ask the creator before paying.

Does Patreon unlock private YouTube videos?
A creator can use Patreon to decide which supporters should receive a bonus video, but the delivery method varies. The video might be hosted on Patreon, YouTube, or another service. A Patreon membership does not automatically unlock YouTube videos: the creator must explain and arrange that benefit.
Unlisted YouTube videos are not the same as access-controlled members-only videos. Anyone who gets an unlisted link may be able to share it. YouTube members-only videos, by contrast, are controlled through YouTube Channel Memberships, not a Patreon membership. Do not assume a creator’s external membership automatically grants secure or exclusive access to a YouTube video.
How to join a YouTuber’s Patreon
- Open the Patreon link from the creator’s official YouTube channel or another verified account.
- Check that the page belongs to the creator or brand you intended to support; be wary of lookalike pages and payment links in random comments.
- Compare tiers and read the benefit details, billing frequency, and any limits.
- Sign in to Patreon or create an account, then review the final checkout total. Taxes, currency, and payment terms may affect what you pay.
- Complete the purchase and check the creator’s posts or welcome instructions for downloads, events, or third-party community access.
- Keep track of the account email and where to manage or cancel the membership.
Patreon vs. YouTube Channel Memberships
YouTube Channel Memberships let eligible viewers pay monthly for perks attached to a channel, which may include badges, emoji, members-only content, and live-chat benefits. Eligibility, availability, and policies depend on YouTube’s requirements. Creators can manage membership levels and view related acquisition and retention information in YouTube Studio. Neither is automatically cheaper or better. Patreon can suit creators who need varied formats and a separate membership hub; YouTube can suit creators whose supporters mainly want simple, in-platform perks. A creator’s choice should reflect the actual benefits, audience habits, eligibility, fees, and work required to deliver the offer.
How much does Patreon cost?
For members, the creator sets the tier price, but the amount at checkout may be affected by taxes, currency, and applicable payment terms. One-time purchases are distinct from recurring memberships. Check the final checkout total rather than relying only on a price shown in a video or post.
For creators, starting a page is free, but paid memberships and one-time sales incur charges. Patreon’s fee documentation says creator pages published after August 4, 2025 generally use a standard 10% platform fee. That is not the total cost: payment processing and other applicable charges may also apply, and Patreon says a 2.5% currency-conversion fee can apply when payment and payout currencies differ. Existing creators may have legacy arrangements under Patreon’s conditions. Fees and terms can change, so check the current creator fee overview and pricing page. Do not interpret “10%” as meaning a creator necessarily keeps 90% of every payment.

Can a creator use Patreon and YouTube Memberships together?
Yes. A creator may offer both, for example, a convenient YouTube membership for badges and live-chat perks, and a Patreon tier for downloads, an archive, or support across multiple projects. This can serve viewers who prefer different platforms, but it also creates more administration.
If both are offered, publish a clear comparison of prices, benefits, delivery locations, and whether the same perk appears on both services. Avoid making supporters pay twice for substantially identical access. Explain how cancellations, failed payments, or changes to a connected service affect access. External benefits such as Discord roles or private links may require additional tools or manual work; do not imply that access automatically syncs unless the creator has confirmed the setup.
Is Patreon worth it for a YouTube channel?
Patreon is more likely to make sense when a creator has a committed audience, a specific recurring benefit, and the time to deliver it reliably. It can be useful for a community that wants downloads, posts, archives, or products beyond the public YouTube video. It is less compelling when the audience mainly wants YouTube-native perks, or when a second account and checkout would deter supporters.

- Consider Patreon for cross-platform support, varied content formats, one-time digital products, or a dedicated membership space.
- Consider YouTube Channel Memberships when viewers are concentrated on YouTube and in-platform convenience is the priority, provided the channel meets YouTube’s requirements.
- Consider neither yet if there is no clear paid benefit, no reliable fulfillment plan, or too little audience demand to justify the work and fees.
Other services, such as Ko-fi or Buy Me a Coffee, may suit simpler support or product models; check their current features, fees, and regional payment terms directly. A creator-owned site can offer more control but brings setup, security, maintenance, and customer-support responsibilities. No option is automatically cheaper or easier for every creator.
Before a creator launches: a practical checklist
- Choose a repeatable benefit. Define what supporters get that is distinct from the free channel, such as a monthly Q&A, production notes, or reliably early access.
- Start simple. One clear entry tier is easier to explain and fulfill than many overlapping levels.
- Price for the work. Account for production time, platform and payment fees, taxes, and the number of supporters you can serve.
- Specify delivery. Say where benefits appear, how often they arrive, whether the archive is included, and what happens if a schedule changes.
- Set boundaries. Avoid vague promises, unlimited personal access, or individualized work that cannot scale. If a community is part of the offer, explain moderation and privacy expectations.
- Publish a welcome post. Give new members clear instructions for finding content, downloads, events, or connected services.
- Promote accurately and review the workload. Add the official link where useful, answer common questions, and revise benefits that are not sustainable.
Patreon is not a guaranteed fix for low ad revenue. It works best when the creator can explain why a fan would join and can keep that promise without making the public channel or paid community unsustainable.
If the creator stops posting
A membership does not guarantee that a creator will continue indefinitely. Check recent activity before joining, and know how to cancel before the next billing date. Creators should communicate breaks, schedule changes, and benefit revisions clearly. Billing, cancellation, and refund outcomes can depend on the transaction, account, and applicable terms; consult Patreon’s current help and account pages rather than assuming one refund rule applies to everyone.
