Gravatar—short for “Globally Recognized Avatar”—links a profile image to an email address so participating websites can display the same avatar without asking you to upload it on each site. WordPress has built-in Gravatar support, but the service can also be used by other platforms.
What Gravatar is
Gravatar is an online avatar service. You associate one or more email addresses with an image in your Gravatar account. When a participating site receives one of those addresses, it can request the corresponding image and show it beside your comment, account name, author box or another user interface.
The site does not need a separate copy of your avatar uploaded through its own settings. It only needs Gravatar support and the email address associated with the image. A site can also choose to host avatars locally instead of contacting Gravatar.

WordPress.org describes the image most commonly appearing beside comments, with optional use elsewhere on a site. A site displaying an image does not necessarily mean that the person has filled out a public Gravatar profile: an avatar match and a public profile are separate things.

How Gravatar matches an email address to an image
- You create or use a Gravatar account and associate an email address with an avatar.
- A participating website collects an email address—for example, from a comment form or user account.
- The website trims whitespace at the beginning and end of the address, converts it to lowercase and computes a SHA-256 hash.
- It places that identifier in a Gravatar image request. The resulting image can then load on the page like any other image resource.
The hash is an identifier used for lookup, not encryption. It should not be treated as proof that the email address is anonymous. Gravatar’s privacy documentation identifies the email hash used to serve an image as information that may be public.
Current SHA-256 guidance
Current Gravatar developer guidance specifies SHA-256 after normalization. Some older WordPress documentation shows the same trimming and lowercasing process followed by an MD5 hash. That MD5 procedure is legacy guidance, not the current general Gravatar implementation. When maintaining older code, check the documentation for the specific WordPress or Gravatar version involved.
What happens when a site requests an avatar
The site requesting the image generally knows the email address it collected and generates the lookup identifier. The browser then requests the avatar resource from Gravatar when the page loads, unless the site has cached or locally stored an image under its own policy.

How WordPress uses Gravatar
WordPress includes Gravatar support for comments and other user contexts. Administrators can control whether avatars are shown, set a maximum allowed rating and choose what appears when no matching avatar is available.
WordPress avatar settings
- Avatar display: turn avatar display on or off.
- Maximum rating: limit the rating of avatars that may appear on the site.
- Default avatar: select a fixed fallback or a generated style for people without a matching Gravatar.
A generated or fixed default is only a fallback. It is not evidence that the commenter registered with Gravatar or that Gravatar found an image.
In WordPress development, the get_avatar() function can accept a user ID, email address, Gravatar hash, user, post or comment and return avatar image markup. Themes and plugins can therefore use the same service in places beyond the standard comment list.

Gravatar profiles versus avatars
An avatar is the image returned for a matching identifier. A Gravatar profile is a separate, potentially public page containing additional information. Users may associate multiple email addresses with one account, and an image lookup can succeed even when a profile lookup for that hash does not.

Privacy: what can be visible
Gravatar Support says profiles are public by default. Its privacy controls distinguish the public avatar from public profile information and from whether search engines should be discouraged from indexing the profile.

Information that may be exposed
- The uploaded avatar image.
- Information the user chooses to make public on the profile.
- The email-derived hash used to serve an image.
- The email address collected and processed by the site requesting the avatar, according to that site’s own data practices.
Disabling public profile visibility affects access through a profile link or email address, including access through Gravatar’s public API. A request to discourage search indexing may take time to take effect; it does not necessarily remove information immediately from every search index or cache.
Practical privacy choices
- Review the public-avatar setting if you do not want one image recognizable across participating sites.
- Review profile visibility separately; hiding profile details does not mean the email-derived lookup process never occurs.
- Choose carefully which email address you provide to websites, since it can determine whether your avatar appears.
- Check the privacy policy of the site displaying the avatar, because that site controls how it collects and handles the address.
Gravatar or locally managed avatars?
A site’s choice affects convenience, consistency and data flow. WordPress can use Gravatar, while plugins or custom systems can manage uploaded images locally.

Do you need a Gravatar account?
You do not need to create a Gravatar account merely to visit a site or to see its fallback avatars. To have your own image returned by Gravatar, you must associate an email address with an avatar. An account requires an email address, username and password. A participating website may still display a default image when no matching Gravatar exists.

Common points of confusion
“The image appeared, so the user must have a public profile.”
Not necessarily. Avatar delivery and profile access are different requests, and a profile may be unavailable even when an image matches.
“The hash hides the email address completely.”
No. Hashing provides the lookup identifier; it is not encryption, and Gravatar lists that identifier among information that may be public.
“Every site uses Gravatar.”
No. Only sites that integrate Gravatar—or use software that does—request and display it. Other sites may use local uploads, another avatar provider or a generated default.

Older WordPress material may show MD5. Current Gravatar developer instructions use SHA-256, so new integrations should follow the current documentation for their implementation.
