GPU scaling resizes an image from a non-native resolution so it fits your display. Most people can leave it alone when Windows and games use the monitor’s native resolution. It is useful when an older game, retro content, or a mismatched aspect ratio appears stretched, too small, or surrounded by unwanted bars.

What GPU scaling actually does

Your monitor has a fixed grid of physical pixels—its native resolution, such as 2560×1440 or 3840×2160. A game or application supplies an image at a source resolution. If those dimensions differ, something must decide how to fit that image to the display: the graphics driver, the monitor or TV, or the application itself.

GPU scaling is resizing performed in the graphics adapter’s display path. It is distinct from Windows interface scaling, which changes the apparent size of text and apps, and from a monitor’s own scaler. Windows treats desktop scaling and display resolution as separate settings; see Microsoft’s resolution and layout guide and its display-path scaling documentation.

For example, a 1280×1024 image is 5:4, while a common monitor is 16:9. Filling the whole screen requires changing the image’s proportions. Preserving the proportions instead leaves unused space at the sides. Those are different scaling choices, not evidence that one setting is broken.

GPU scaling versus monitor scaling

GPU scaling Monitor or TV scaling
Resizing is handled in the graphics adapter/driver path. Supported driver controls may offer aspect-ratio, full-screen, centered, or integer modes. Resizing is handled by the display’s electronics, often automatically or through options in its on-screen menu.
Can provide consistent driver-level behavior across supported resolutions and connections. Needs no special GPU setting and may be preferable if the display’s scaler gives the result you want.
Availability depends on GPU, driver, display connection, active resolution, and system design. Available modes and image quality vary by display.

Neither method is universally sharper or better. NVIDIA’s control panel explicitly offers a choice about where scaling is performed; AMD also documents configuration prerequisites for its GPU scaling controls. Compare the result on your own setup rather than assuming the graphics card’s scaler wins.

Do you need GPU scaling?

Usually, no. If the desktop and games use the display’s native resolution and the correct aspect ratio, changing GPU scaling may make no visible difference. A display can scale lower-resolution input on its own, and a game may manage its output independently.

  • Leave it at its default if the picture looks right at native resolution.
  • Configure it if an older game is stretched, a non-native mode has unwanted geometry, or you want a centered or pixel-preserving image.
  • Consider integer scaling for suitable pixel-art games or other low-resolution content where crisp, block-shaped pixels matter.
  • Do not enable it expecting a frame-rate boost by itself. Performance gains come from rendering fewer pixels in the game. Scaling merely resizes the resulting image; it is not a rendering-performance feature.

For a lower-resolution game on a 4K screen, first try preserving the aspect ratio. The image may be softer than native-resolution output, particularly with fractional scaling. That trade-off is separate from whether the GPU or monitor performs the resize.

Choose a scaling mode

Mode What it does Good fit Trade-off
Preserve aspect ratio Enlarges the image as much as possible without changing its proportions. Older 4:3 or 5:4 games on widescreen displays; content where correct geometry matters. Black bars appear where the image does not fill the panel. A 4:3 image on a 16:9 screen typically has bars on the left and right.
Full-screen / Full panel / Stretched Fills the display, even if the source and panel have different proportions. When filling the screen matters more than geometric accuracy, or stretching is intentional. Circles and characters can look wider or narrower.
Center / No scaling Shows the source at its original pixel dimensions, centered on the display. Checking whether interpolation causes blur, or viewing content pixel-for-pixel. The picture occupies less of a high-resolution display and has borders around it.
Integer scaling Enlarges pixels by whole-number multiples—2×, 3×, and so on—instead of using a fractional ratio. Pixel-art games, emulators, and suitable retro content. It may leave unused screen area and is not a universal solution for modern 3D games. Availability varies by GPU and driver.

NVIDIA documents integer scaling on supported Turing-generation and later GPUs. AMD and Intel also document integer- or retro-scaling features for supported configurations. Check the vendor’s current information: NVIDIA scaling modes, AMD integer scaling, and Intel Retro Scaling.

How to enable GPU scaling

Before changing settings, note your display’s native resolution and refresh rate, and confirm which GPU drives it. Where practical, connect the display directly to that GPU. For normal desktop use, keep Windows at the display’s recommended resolution. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped and restore the original behavior if necessary.

NVIDIA Control Panel

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Under Display, choose Adjust desktop size and position.
  3. Select the display you want to configure and open the Scaling tab.
  4. Choose a scaling mode: Aspect ratio, Full-screen, No scaling, or Integer scaling if available.
  5. Under Perform scaling on, choose GPU, then select Apply.

For a 4:3 game on a widescreen display, start with GPU → Aspect ratio. Choose Full-screen only if you want the image stretched. For pixel-perfect retro content, compare No scaling with Integer scaling where supported. NVIDIA’s guides explain the control-panel path and scaling modes.

If the controls are absent, the display may not be connected to the NVIDIA GPU, the connection or display type may not expose the feature, or a laptop’s hybrid-graphics path may route its internal panel through integrated graphics. Display scaling may also be handled automatically. NVIDIA notes that supported display types and connections affect which options appear.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Search for Display or open the Display section.
  3. Set GPU Scaling to Enabled.
  4. Choose Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, or Center.

AMD says the screen may briefly go blank while the setting changes. Its documented controls support digital connections such as DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort, and the display should be set to its native resolution and refresh rate with a supported driver installed. Availability can still vary by system and connection. See AMD’s GPU Scaling guide.

Choose Preserve aspect ratio to avoid distortion, Full panel to fill the screen regardless of proportions, or Center to avoid enlargement. Integer scaling is a separate feature, not another name for Full panel; see AMD’s integer-scaling information.

Intel Graphics Command Center

  1. Open Intel Graphics Command Center.
  2. Select Display, then choose the display.
  3. Find Scale and choose an available mode: Centered, Stretched, Maintain Aspect Ratio, Maintain Display Scaling, or Custom, where supported.

Mode names and availability depend on the display and driver. Intel notes that newer versions may hide options such as Centered, Stretched, and Maintain Aspect Ratio when the display is already at its recommended resolution; they may reappear after selecting a different supported resolution. Custom scaling is unavailable on built-in laptop screens in the documented scenario. See Intel’s guides to scaling options and options hidden at recommended resolution.

Which setting fits your situation?

  • 4:3 or 5:4 game on a 16:9 or ultrawide monitor: Start with Preserve aspect ratio. Use Full panel only if you deliberately want a stretched image.
  • Retro emulator or pixel-art game: Try integer scaling for crisp whole-pixel enlargement. Center/no scaling is another way to avoid interpolation, at the cost of a smaller picture.
  • Lower-resolution game on a 4K display: Use the game’s resolution settings first, then test aspect-preserving scaling. Expect some softness if the scale ratio is fractional.
  • Modern game: Prefer its native resolution when practical. If using the game’s own resolution-scaling or upscaling controls, test those separately from the driver’s display scaling.
  • Video playback: The player and display may already manage aspect ratio. Use the player’s aspect controls or display settings if the video is cropped or distorted before changing global GPU settings.
  • Laptop internal screen: Scaling controls may be limited or managed through integrated graphics or a hybrid-display path. An external display connected to a different GPU output may expose different controls.

GPU scaling is not DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or Radeon Super Resolution

Basic GPU scaling resizes an image in the display path to fit the screen. DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and Radeon Super Resolution are separate game-upscaling technologies; they can work with an image rendered internally at a lower resolution and use different methods to reconstruct or upscale it. They are not interchangeable with a driver’s Aspect ratio or Full-screen setting. AMD notes that Radeon Super Resolution can enable GPU Scaling under global display settings, but that relationship does not make the two features the same; see AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution guide.

Troubleshooting common problems

Black bars remain

Bars are expected with Preserve aspect ratio when the source and display have different proportions; Center/no scaling also produces borders by design. If you want to check that scaling is active, temporarily try Full panel. If the picture fills the display but becomes distorted, return to Preserve aspect ratio. Also check the monitor’s on-screen menu for settings such as aspect, original, wide, or 1:1. A borderless-windowed game may manage its own composition, so test exclusive fullscreen if the game offers it.

The image is stretched

Choose Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio instead of Full-screen or Full panel. Check the game for its own stretch setting and the monitor’s on-screen menu for a stretch or wide mode. The game, GPU, and display can each influence the final presentation.

The image is blurry

A source resolution below native may look softer, especially with fractional scaling. The game may also be rendering internally below its selected output resolution, or the image may be scaled more than once. Return Windows to the recommended resolution, test the game’s internal resolution separately, and compare monitor scaling with GPU scaling rather than stacking both. Center/no scaling can help establish whether interpolation is the source of softness; use integer scaling only for suitable content. Microsoft notes that non-native output can appear less sharp, centered, bordered, or stretched in its resolution guide.

The option is missing

  1. Confirm which GPU drives the display and, where possible, connect directly to it.
  2. Check the connection type and the display’s native resolution and refresh rate.
  3. Confirm the correct vendor driver and control application are installed.
  4. On Intel, remember that some modes are intentionally hidden at the recommended resolution.
  5. On a laptop, account for hybrid graphics and the internal panel’s display path.
  6. Check whether the monitor handles scaling automatically or offers controls in its own on-screen menu.

A missing control is not necessarily a driver fault; availability depends on configuration. See NVIDIA’s supported-display notes, AMD’s prerequisites, and Intel’s explanation of hidden options.

The setting changes the desktop but not the game

The game may be running borderless-windowed, controlling its own output, using internal resolution scaling, or applying a per-game driver profile. Test exclusive fullscreen if available, choose the intended resolution inside the game, and temporarily disable competing scaling options to isolate the display path. A driver setting does not necessarily override every application’s composition.

The screen goes black briefly

A short blank while changing scaling state can be normal; AMD explicitly notes this during GPU Scaling changes. If the picture does not return, wait several seconds, then try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. If needed, use Windows display settings to restore the previous resolution, reconnect the display, or restart and restore the original scaling mode.
