ChatGPT is a conversational artificial-intelligence service from OpenAI. You can ask it questions or give it instructions in ordinary language, and it can help with writing, learning, coding, planning, translation, document analysis, data work, image tasks, research, and more.
It does not retrieve one prewritten answer from a database or automatically search the internet for every question. At its core, ChatGPT uses language models that learn statistical patterns from large amounts of data and generate a response step by step. The result can be remarkably fluent and useful, but it can also be wrong, outdated, biased, or overly confident.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a conversational AI assistant that lets people interact with OpenAI’s models through a chat interface. It is available on the web and through official iOS and Android apps. The exact models, tools, limits, and features available can vary by account, plan, device, region, and date.

ChatGPT is best understood as a product rather than one permanently fixed model. The service can provide access to different OpenAI models and can add tools such as web search, file analysis, data analysis, voice, image generation, memory, Projects, and deep research where those capabilities are available.

It can maintain relevant context within a conversation, follow instructions, and adapt its answer to a requested audience or format. However, fluent conversation does not prove human-like understanding, consciousness, emotions, or guaranteed accuracy.
What does GPT stand for?
- Generative: It creates new output rather than merely displaying a fixed document.
- Pre-trained: The model first learns broad patterns from large datasets before being adapted for useful interaction.
- Transformer: This refers to the neural-network architecture used to process relationships between tokens in context.
Chat describes the back-and-forth conversational interface. The acronym explains the underlying model family, not every feature now included in the ChatGPT product.
How does ChatGPT work?
A useful mental model is:
Your instruction
→ tokens and conversation context
→ model predicts a response step by step
→ optional tools retrieve, calculate, or inspect files
→ ChatGPT presents the answer
→ you review, verify, and refine it1. How the model learns patterns
During training, OpenAI develops foundation models using a mixture of publicly available information, information obtained through partnerships, and information provided or generated by users, human trainers, and researchers. The models process examples involving language and, depending on the model, other forms of data such as images, audio, and video.
Training adjusts large collections of numerical values called parameters. These parameters help the model recognize relationships and patterns: how words tend to appear together, how explanations are structured, how code is written, and how different instructions relate to likely responses.
Additional training and human feedback help make the system more useful, better at following instructions, and safer. OpenAI describes the process as learning patterns rather than retaining ordinary copies of its training examples. That explanation should not be interpreted as a guarantee that memorization or reproduction of particular material can never occur. 2. How it generates an answer
When you send a prompt, the text is divided into tokens. A token may be a whole word, part of a word, punctuation, or another small unit. ChatGPT considers those tokens along with relevant conversation context, system instructions, and any available files, memories, or tools.
The model then calculates which next token is likely to fit the context. It selects one, adds it to the response, calculates the next token, and repeats the process until it has produced an answer. People often describe this as predicting the next word, but “next token” is more technically accurate.

The response is generated dynamically from the prompt, learned model parameters, context, and—when enabled—external tools. The generation process can produce original combinations of ideas, but it can also produce plausible statements that are unsupported or false.

- File uploads: Helps inspect supported documents, presentations, spreadsheets, images, and other files.
- Data analysis: Can run code in a secure environment for calculations, CSV or spreadsheet analysis, charts, and related work.
- Image generation and editing: Creates or modifies images from instructions where supported.
- Voice: Enables spoken interaction on supported platforms.
- Memory: Can retain selected useful information, such as preferences or recurring goals, when enabled.
- Projects and deep research: Organize ongoing work or conduct more extensive source-based research where available.
- Custom GPTs: Configured versions of ChatGPT designed for particular tasks.
These tools are conditional. A response does not necessarily involve web search, code execution, file inspection, or memory simply because ChatGPT is capable of those functions. Availability depends on the selected experience, account, plan, platform, and region. Tool use also does not guarantee that the retrieved information or final interpretation is correct. Why does ChatGPT sound human?
The model was trained on human-produced material and conversational patterns, then optimized to follow instructions and produce coherent dialogue. Because it predicts language in context, it can create an impression of personality, intention, empathy, or understanding.
That impression is not proof that ChatGPT is conscious or self-aware. It does not experience human emotions, and its confident conversational style is not a reliable measure of factual accuracy. “It is just autocomplete” is also too simple: the system uses large learned models, context, post-training, and sometimes external tools. Still, the central prediction mechanism helps explain why fluency and truth are separate properties.
What can you use ChatGPT for?
ChatGPT is most useful as an assistant, collaborator, or first-draft generator. Common uses include:

For medical, legal, financial, emergency, safety-critical, or employment decisions, use ChatGPT for questions and preparation—not as the sole authority. A qualified human remains responsible for accountable, high-stakes judgment.
How to use ChatGPT for the first time
- Visit ChatGPT on the web or open the official mobile app.
- Sign in, or use the service without an account where that option is supported.
- Type a specific request into the message box and send it.
- Ask follow-up questions to refine the result, correct assumptions, or request another format.
- Select New chat when the topic or required context changes substantially.
You do not need to install Python, use a terminal, or write code to use the normal ChatGPT service. The OpenAI API is a separate developer product for putting models into an application or workflow.

How web search changes ChatGPT
Without a retrieval tool, ChatGPT generates an answer from learned model patterns and the current conversation. With web search enabled, it can retrieve current pages and use them to construct a source-backed response.
Search is especially useful for current events, prices, schedules, product specifications, regulations, and unfamiliar subjects. It does not remove the need for checking: search results can be incomplete, a source can be unreliable, and the model can misunderstand or misrepresent what a page says. Open the citations and confirm that they support the specific claim.

A response without citations is not automatically false, but it is less suitable for claims that depend on current or specialized information.

ChatGPT can produce hallucinations: plausible-sounding but false, invented, or unsupported statements. This is not merely an occasional spelling glitch. The system is optimized to generate a useful continuation of a conversation, not to guarantee that every sentence is true.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Invented facts or citations: Ask for sources, use search, and open primary documents yourself.
- Confidently wrong answers: Ask, “What assumptions are you making?” and “Which parts should I verify?”
- Outdated information: Use web search and check publication dates.
- Ambiguous prompts: State the audience, goal, constraints, tone, and desired format.
- Arithmetic or code errors: Ask for workings, run calculations, test code, and inspect edge cases.
- Bias or missing perspectives: Request assumptions, counterarguments, limitations, and evidence from relevant primary sources.
- Context contamination: Start a New chat, restate the requirements, or say exactly which earlier information should be ignored.
- Unavailable tools: Confirm whether search, file analysis, code execution, or another tool was actually used.
Is ChatGPT private?
Privacy depends on the product, plan, settings, information you provide, and any connected service. Do not paste passwords, financial credentials, personal identifiers, medical records, confidential business material, or proprietary information unless you understand the applicable controls and policy.
Training controls for consumer chats
For consumer plans, content may be used to improve models unless you opt out. On the web, the current path is:
Profile icon → Settings → Data Controls → turn off “Improve the model for everyone.”

According to OpenAI’s Data Controls documentation, turning this off leaves conversations in your history but prevents new conversations from being used to improve ChatGPT. The setting applies across the account, including other devices. Check the current policy because controls and labels can change.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu offerings have different data-use commitments and administrative controls. Organizations should review the plan-specific terms rather than assume that consumer settings apply.
Memory, history, and Temporary Chat are different
Memory, when enabled, can retain selected useful facts such as preferences, goals, or recurring projects. You can view, edit, or delete saved memories. Memory is separate from the immediate context of one conversation.
Regular chats remain in your account until you delete them. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to legal, security, or de-identification exceptions. You can also export your data through Settings → Data Controls → Export.

Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history, does not create or use memories, and is not used to train models. OpenAI’s cited help documentation says Temporary Chats are automatically deleted from its systems within 30 days, although they may still be reviewed for abuse monitoring.
These controls reduce particular forms of retention or use; they do not make it safe to share every sensitive document. Review the current Data Controls FAQ and retention information for current details.

Custom GPTs are configured versions of ChatGPT for particular purposes. They can contain instructions, conversation starters, uploaded knowledge files, and selected capabilities such as web search or image generation. Some can use apps or external API actions.
As of the current help documentation dated in the supplied product research, new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts. Creation, editing, and publishing in managed workspaces depend on workspace settings and permissions. Existing GPTs may remain usable. Because this is a changeable product policy, check OpenAI’s current GPT guidance before relying on it.

However, if a GPT uses an external app or API, relevant input may be sent to that third party. Use only GPTs and integrations you trust, and inspect their capabilities before sharing sensitive information.
Custom GPTs are designed to run inside ChatGPT. Developers who want to place an AI assistant in their own website, application, or workflow generally use the separate OpenAI API.
Is ChatGPT free?
OpenAI currently lists Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. The Free plan is suitable for trying ChatGPT and occasional use, while paid plans generally provide expanded access, higher limits, or additional tools. Business and Enterprise plans add workspace, administrative, collaboration, and governance features suited to organizations.
- Free: A starting point for casual users and basic experimentation.
- Go or Plus: Individual options for people who use ChatGPT more regularly and need more access than the free tier.
- Pro: Intended for intensive individual workflows where substantially higher usage and advanced capabilities justify the cost.
- Business: For teams needing a shared workspace, billing, collaboration, and administration.
- Enterprise: For larger organizations seeking sales-led procurement and expanded governance, security, and workspace controls.
- API: For developers building AI functionality into another product; API charges and access are separate from ChatGPT subscriptions.
Plans are presented as per-user-per-month offerings, with monthly and, for some business plans, annual billing options. Prices, taxes, availability, usage limits, model access, and features can vary by country and change over time. Check the live pricing page before subscribing. A more expensive plan may provide more capacity or tools, but it does not make answers automatically truthful.

A traditional search engine is primarily designed to find and rank pages that you can open directly. ChatGPT is primarily designed to interpret an instruction and generate a conversational response. The two can overlap when ChatGPT has web search enabled.

Use a search engine when you want to navigate directly to official pages, compare many sources yourself, find a particular website, or verify a current fact. Use ChatGPT when you want help explaining, transforming, organizing, drafting, or synthesizing information. For important claims, using both can be sensible: ask ChatGPT to help frame the question, then inspect authoritative sources yourself.
When should you not rely on ChatGPT?
Do not rely on it alone for medical diagnosis or treatment, legal advice, financial decisions, emergency instructions, identity verification, exact quotations, guaranteed citations, or any task where a mistake could cause serious harm. Human experts, official records, and accountable institutions remain preferable for high-stakes decisions.
Other tools may be a better fit for particular needs: specialized writing software may offer stronger document controls, coding assistants may integrate more deeply into development environments, local models may offer more deployment control for technical users, and traditional search may be better for direct source discovery.

Is ChatGPT AI?
Yes. It is a generative AI service built around OpenAI language models and, in some experiences, additional multimodal models and tools.
Does ChatGPT use the internet for every answer?
No. Web access is a separate capability that may be available and enabled in some chats. Look for source links or search indicators, and do not assume that a normal response reflects live web information.
Does ChatGPT remember previous chats?
It can use the context of the current conversation, and an enabled Memory feature may retain selected information. That is different from remembering every past chat. Temporary Chat does not create or use memories.
Can ChatGPT write essays or code?
Yes, it can help brainstorm, outline, draft, explain, debug, and revise. You remain responsible for checking accuracy, attribution, originality requirements, security, and applicable school or workplace rules.
