CCTV stands for closed-circuit television. It is a surveillance system that captures video and sends it to selected monitors, recorders, software, or cloud services instead of broadcasting it publicly.
The basic process is: scene → camera sensor → image processing → cable or network → recorder or software → storage → live viewing, alerts, playback, and export. Traditional CCTV usually uses coaxial cable and a DVR. Modern IP-camera systems use a network, often with Power over Ethernet (PoE), and typically record through an NVR or video-management system.
What does CCTV mean?
“CCTV” means closed-circuit television. “Closed circuit” describes video sent to a restricted destination rather than transmitted publicly. “Television” reflects the technology’s original purpose: sending moving images to a monitor.

Today, CCTV is commonly used as an umbrella term for security-camera systems. Technically, there is an important distinction:

- Traditional analog CCTV: cameras send signals over coaxial cable to a DVR.
- IP video surveillance: cameras create digital video and send it over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or another IP network to an NVR, VMS, local storage, or cloud service.
Both systems can be used for surveillance, recording, playback, alerts, and remote viewing. A CCTV system does not have to be disconnected from the internet: it may be entirely local, remotely accessible, cloud-connected, or hybrid. How does a CCTV system work?
- The camera observes a scene. A lens focuses light onto an image sensor. Lens choice determines how wide an area is visible and how much detail appears at a distance.
- The camera creates and processes the image. The camera adjusts exposure, color, noise, dynamic range, and day/night operation. It may also perform motion or object analysis.
- The video is compressed. IP cameras commonly encode video using formats such as H.264 or H.265. Higher resolution and frame rates generally require more bandwidth and storage, while stronger compression can reduce file size at the cost of image artifacts. - The video travels to a recorder or service. Analog video usually travels over coaxial cable to a DVR. Digital video may travel over Ethernet, PoE, Wi-Fi, or another network connection to an NVR, VMS, camera storage, NAS, or cloud platform.
- The system records and organizes footage. Recording may be continuous, scheduled, motion-triggered, or based on events such as people, vehicles, line crossings, or alarms.
- Users view, search, receive alerts, or export footage. Access may be through a monitor, desktop client, browser, mobile app, VPN, or vendor remote-access service.
A local system may continue recording during an internet outage if its cameras and recorder remain powered and connected on the local network. Remote viewing and cloud features may stop until internet access returns. Reolink discusses local and remote viewing behavior.
Main components of a CCTV system
Cameras and lenses
The camera is only one part of the system. Its useful performance depends on:
- Resolution and pixel count
- Lens focal length and field of view
- Fixed, varifocal, panoramic, fisheye, or PTZ design
- Frame rate, shutter speed, and exposure
- Wide dynamic range for bright and dark areas
- Low-light performance and night illumination
- Weather and vandal-resistance ratings
- Audio, analytics, and local-storage support
A higher megapixel rating does not automatically mean better evidence. A narrow lens may show more identifying detail at a distance than a very wide lens with the same nominal resolution.
Illumination
Night-capable cameras generally use infrared light, visible white light, or a sensitive low-light sensor. Infrared can produce black-and-white footage and may reflect from glass, walls, rain, or nearby surfaces. White-light cameras can preserve color but may be more conspicuous.
Cables, network equipment, and PoE
Analog cameras commonly use coaxial cable, often with a separate power connection. IP cameras may use Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows compatible Ethernet equipment to carry electrical power and network data through one cable. A PoE camera normally connects to a PoE switch, injector, or PoE-enabled NVR. PoE does not mean the camera receives power from the internet; power comes from local network equipment. A DVR generally receives analog video, digitizes it, and records it. An NVR receives digital video from IP cameras and stores it. Video-management software (VMS) manages cameras, users, recordings, playback, alerts, permissions, and integrations. NVRs typically organize feeds for live viewing, playback, and export.
Storage and power backup
Storage may be provided by a DVR or NVR hard drive, camera microSD card, NAS, server, cloud service, or a combination. A UPS can keep cameras, the recorder, and network equipment operating during short power interruptions, provided its capacity is sufficient.

Analog CCTV versus IP cameras

IP is often the more flexible choice for a new wired installation, but it is not automatically superior. Reusing existing coax can make an analog or hybrid system cheaper and simpler. A new IP system can also introduce network bandwidth, PoE, firmware, and account-security requirements.
DVR versus NVR
The key difference is where the video becomes digital:
- DVR: receives an analog signal over coaxial cable and digitizes it in the recorder.
- NVR: receives digital video, usually from IP cameras, over a network.
Choose a DVR or hybrid recorder when an existing site already has usable coaxial cabling and does not need extensive network integration. Choose an NVR when installing a new PoE system, using higher-resolution IP cameras, distributing cameras across a building, or integrating cameras with other network software.
Common CCTV camera types
Fixed cameras
Fixed cameras point in one direction. They are usually simple and cost-effective for entrances, hallways, counters, driveways, and other defined views. Poor placement creates permanent blind spots.
Dome cameras
Dome cameras have a compact housing and are common indoors and in commercial environments. Outdoor models need suitable weather protection. Water or condensation on the dome can blur footage, so an overhang is helpful where practical. Ubiquiti provides guidance on camera IP and IK ratings.
Bullet cameras
Bullet cameras are visible, wall- or eave-mounted units often used for perimeter views. Their visibility may act as a deterrent, but the housing can be more exposed to tampering.
PTZ cameras
Pan-tilt-zoom cameras can move horizontally, vertically, and optically zoom. They are useful for active monitoring and large areas, but a PTZ camera may be pointed elsewhere when an event occurs. Several fixed cameras can provide more dependable continuous coverage.
Panoramic and fisheye cameras
These cameras provide very wide coverage and can reduce the number of mounting points. The trade-off is distortion and weaker detail toward the edges. A single panoramic camera can also become a single point of failure.
Wi-Fi and PoE cameras
Wi-Fi cameras are useful where Ethernet installation is difficult, but they still need reliable power unless battery-operated. Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, congestion, and battery limits can affect continuity.

PoE cameras require cable installation but usually offer more predictable connectivity for continuous recording. The camera, switch or NVR, cable, connectors, and PoE power budget must all be compatible.

How is CCTV footage stored?
Recording modes
- Continuous: records everything and is best when a complete timeline matters, but uses the most storage.
- Motion-triggered: saves space but can miss activity or trigger on shadows, rain, trees, headlights, and insects.
- Scheduled: records during selected hours.
- Event-based: records when configured rules detect people, vehicles, line crossings, alarms, or other events.
Retention and storage calculation
There is no universal answer to “How many days can CCTV record?” A useful approximation is:
Required storage ≈ total camera bitrate × recording time × number of cameras
Actual retention depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, scene activity, recording mode, and storage capacity. Four cameras recording only on motion may retain footage much longer than eight high-resolution cameras recording continuously.
Many systems overwrite the oldest footage when storage is full. Export important clips before that happens, and check drive-health warnings. RAID can reduce downtime after some drive failures, but RAID is not a backup: it does not protect against theft, fire, deletion, ransomware, or damage to the recorder. Reolink notes that additional drives or RAID may be considered for retention and data-loss protection.

Local storage
Footage remains on the camera, DVR, NVR, NAS, or local server. Local systems can continue recording during an internet outage and may provide greater control and privacy. Their weaknesses include recorder theft, drive failure, maintenance requirements, and the need to secure remote access.
Cloud storage
Cloud systems upload footage or event clips to a provider. They simplify remote access and can preserve footage if local hardware is stolen. They also depend on internet service, vendor accounts, provider availability, upload bandwidth, retention policies, and sometimes recurring subscriptions.
Hybrid storage
Hybrid systems record locally while optionally uploading important events, backups, or notifications. This can combine local continuity with off-site protection.
Can CCTV be viewed remotely?
Yes, but remote viewing requires a working network connection, authorized access, configured permissions, and a secure remote path. Common methods include a vendor relay service, VPN access, or remote-management platform.

Avoid exposing camera or recorder interfaces directly to the public internet unless you understand the risks and have secured the system. Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available, current firmware, restricted administrator accounts, encrypted connections, and disabled unused services. Separating cameras onto a dedicated VLAN or network can further limit exposure.
Also separate two questions: is the system recording? and can I reach it remotely? A local recorder may continue recording even when the app cannot connect.
What can CCTV detect?
Depending on the camera and software, a system may detect:
- General motion
- People, vehicles, or animals
- Line crossing or intrusion into a defined area
- Loitering, tampering, packages, or audio events
- License plates or faces
- Occupancy or people counts
These terms are not interchangeable:
- Recording saves what the camera sees.
- Motion detection identifies changes in the scene, often by analyzing pixels.
- Object detection classifies an apparent person, vehicle, or animal.
- Recognition compares an apparent object or face with known data.
- Identification means the footage contains enough usable detail to determine who or what is shown.
A person-detection alert is not proof of identity. Analytics can fail because of glare, shadows, rain, occlusion, poor lighting, crowded scenes, compression, or a subject leaving the frame.
Why high resolution does not guarantee useful evidence
Design cameras around the evidence you need, not only the advertised megapixel number. Useful identification depends on:
- Distance from the subject
- Lens width and focal length
- Mounting height and angle
- Lighting and backlighting
- Shutter speed and motion blur
- Night illumination
- Compression and frame rate
- Whether the face or object is obscured
Think in terms of four outcomes: detection means noticing something exists; observation shows general characteristics; recognition suggests whether it resembles something known; and identification provides enough detail to establish identity. A narrower second camera may solve an identification problem better than replacing a wide camera with a higher-resolution model.

For a home or apartment
A small PoE system is a strong option when reliable continuous recording matters and Ethernet can be installed. Wi-Fi cameras may be suitable for a few locations where cabling is impractical. Decide whether you need local recording, cloud backup, or both.
For a driveway or exterior
Prioritize night performance, weather resistance, glare control, mounting height, and a field of view that covers faces or license plates at the required distance. Avoid pointing cameras unnecessarily into neighbors’ property or private areas.

Consider PoE cameras, an NVR, a UPS, secure remote access, sufficient retention, user permissions, and a plan for exporting evidence. Add professional installation where cable routes, electrical work, or access equipment make DIY installation unreliable.

For a warehouse or larger site
Plan coverage zones, network capacity, PoE budgets, storage, VLANs, time synchronization, access control, analytics, maintenance, and recovery procedures before choosing cameras.
For a privacy-sensitive installation
Use masking or exclusion zones, minimize audio collection, restrict users, define retention periods, and keep footage off areas that do not require monitoring.

- Wired versus wireless reliability
- Local, cloud, or hybrid recording
- Retention and storage capacity
- Analytics performance for the actual scene
- Interoperability and exact model support
- Cybersecurity and update support
- Warranty, replacement, and total ownership cost
ONVIF, RTSP, and vendor compatibility
ONVIF promotes standardized interfaces intended to improve interoperability among IP-based physical-security products. ONVIF describes its interoperability mission.
RTSP is commonly used to access live video streams from compatible cameras. A camera may provide an RTSP stream or basic ONVIF discovery while not supporting its vendor’s advanced alerts, audio, PTZ controls, metadata, or two-way talk in a third-party recorder. Reolink documents model-specific RTSP and ONVIF support.
Before mixing brands, verify the exact camera and recorder models, supported ONVIF profiles, RTSP availability, continuous-recording support, audio, analytics, firmware behavior, and whether cloud access is mandatory. “ONVIF compatible” does not mean every feature works with every NVR.
Common CCTV problems and fixes
The camera works live but did not record
- Storage is full, failed, or disabled.
- The recording schedule excludes the event.
- Motion detection did not trigger.
- The camera disconnected from the recorder.
- Camera and recorder clocks are wrong.
- The recording channel is disabled.
- Stream settings exceed recorder capacity.
- A cloud plan or account status changed.
The camera is offline
- Check power or PoE status.
- Replace or test the Ethernet cable and connectors.
- Check the switch port and Wi-Fi signal.
- Look for IP-address conflicts, DHCP changes, VLAN rules, or firewall blocks.
- Check firmware, account status, and local visibility.
- Test local access separately from remote access.
Night footage is too dark
Re-aim the camera, add suitable lighting, clean the lens, adjust exposure or infrared settings, reduce the field of view, and remove nearby surfaces that reflect infrared light. If the scene remains unsuitable, use a camera designed for better low-light performance.
The image is clear but people cannot be identified
The camera may be too far away, too wide, too high, backlit, affected by motion blur, or unable to illuminate faces. The answer may be a narrower camera positioned for identification rather than simply more resolution.

Check the internet connection, vendor service, router or firewall changes, subscription, password, multifactor authentication, firmware, remote-access setting, DNS, and time synchronization. A remote-access failure does not necessarily mean local recording has stopped.
Compatible cameras lose important features
Basic video streaming may work while smart detections, two-way audio, PTZ presets, events, camera storage, or metadata do not. Check the recorder’s feature list for the exact model rather than relying only on a protocol badge.
Privacy, legal, and ethical considerations
Rules vary by jurisdiction, property type, audio capability, employee status, public-space use, biometric functions, and how footage is shared. Check applicable requirements for signage, consent, audio recording, employee monitoring, neighboring property, private rooms, retention, access, deletion, facial recognition, and law-enforcement disclosure.
Video and audio may be regulated differently. A silent camera can be treated differently from one that records conversations. Use privacy masking or exclusion zones where possible, and avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, changing areas, or other locations that do not need surveillance. This is general information, not legal advice. What CCTV can—and cannot—do
CCTV can observe, record, alert, preserve evidence, support investigations, and sometimes deter unwanted behavior. It cannot guarantee crime prevention, perfect detection, reliable identification, uninterrupted operation, or police action. Its value depends on camera placement, lighting, storage, power, network reliability, cybersecurity, maintenance, and lawful use.
