An .avhd file is a Hyper-V differencing virtual hard-disk file. It stores changes made after a virtual machine’s parent disk was created—commonly when a checkpoint or backup workflow runs—while unchanged data remains in a parent .vhd or .vhdx file. The newer VHDX-era equivalent is usually .avhdx.
Do not delete, rename, or move an AVHD/AVHDX file manually. It is normally one layer in a parent-child disk chain, not a complete independent copy of the VM. Microsoft warns administrators not to delete checkpoint files directly; remove the checkpoint through Hyper-V so the differencing disk can be merged safely.
How an AVHD file works
Think of the files as layers rather than separate complete disks:

└── Checkpoint2.avhdxThe base disk contains the original blocks. Each child file records later writes relative to its parent. Hyper-V follows the chain to present the VM with its complete current disk. An AVHD’s apparent size therefore does not indicate the virtual disk’s total capacity, but it can grow substantially as the guest writes data and consume host storage.

Microsoft describes checkpoint files and their storage behavior in its Hyper-V checkpoint documentation.
Why Hyper-V creates AVHD files
- Checkpoints: Creating a standard or production checkpoint redirects subsequent writes into a differencing file.
- Backup operations: Backup software may create a temporary Hyper-V checkpoint. A failed or interrupted job can leave an AVHD/AVHDX chain behind.
- Deliberate differencing disks: Administrators can configure a child disk without a checkpoint appearing in the graphical checkpoint list.
- Incomplete cleanup: A merge can fail because of low host storage, a file lock, a broken parent path, or a stopped backup process.
“Snapshot” is older or informal terminology; current Hyper-V documentation generally uses checkpoint.

Changing an extension does not convert a disk. Renaming .avhd to .vhd, or .avhdx to .vhdx, can break the chain and does not change the file format.

Not like a document or archive. Hyper-V manages it as part of a virtual disk chain. You may inspect metadata with Hyper-V tools, but casually mounting, attaching, editing, renaming, moving, or deleting the child is unsafe. The parent may be required to read data that is not present in the AVHD itself.
If the parent is missing, the child usually cannot reconstruct the entire disk. Restore the complete parent-and-child chain from backup rather than guessing at a repair.

Find which VM and parent own the file
In Hyper-V Manager, select the suspected VM, open Settings, inspect attached hard-drive paths, and review the Checkpoints pane. An AVHD can still be orphaned, backup-created, or part of a manually configured differencing disk even when no checkpoint is displayed.
Run these commands in an elevated PowerShell session on the relevant Hyper-V host:

}Preserve the exact paths and filenames shown. Do not modify the parent while a child depends on it.
Remove an AVHD safely
When the checkpoint is visible
- Confirm the VM and checkpoint are the correct ones.
- Ensure a recent backup exists and that the host has sufficient free space.
- In Hyper-V Manager, select the checkpoint and choose Delete or Delete Checkpoint Subtree.
- Wait for Hyper-V to merge the child into its parent. The AVHD/AVHDX may remain visible during the merge.
You can also remove the checkpoint with PowerShell:

Get-VMSnapshot -VMName <VMName> | Remove-VMSnapshotDeleting a checkpoint normally merges its differencing disk and then removes the child; it is not an instant file deletion and discards the ability to return to that checkpoint.

When no checkpoint is visible
Do not delete the file. First stop the VM where practical, finish or cancel any backup job, preserve the entire chain, and verify ParentPath. For an orphaned chain, Hyper-V Manager’s Edit Disk wizard can select the AVHDX and choose Merge → To the parent virtual disk.
An advanced PowerShell merge has this form:

-DestinationPath <parent-vhdx>Use it only after identifying the correct source, destination, chain order, VM state, and locks. Multi-level chains must be merged in the correct child-to-parent order. A wrong merge can make the VM unbootable or permanently remove checkpoint-only data.
Common problems
Host storage is disappearing
Free space inside the guest is different from free space on the Hyper-V host. A growing differencing chain consumes host capacity, and a merge can require substantial working space. Microsoft recommends ensuring ample free space—often comparable to the virtual disk’s provisioned size—before attempting checkpoint cleanup.
The AVHD remains after checkpoint deletion
The merge may still be running or may have failed. Check Hyper-V and backup logs, available host storage, and whether another process has the file open. Do not remove the remaining file manually.

The merge reports a sharing violation
Backup software, antivirus, Hyper-V services, or another management tool may hold the disk. Confirm the backup job has finished, then use Resource Monitor or Process Monitor to identify the lock. Retry only after understanding the VM state and lock owner.
There are AVHD files but no checkpoints
Possible causes include an orphaned checkpoint, a backup-created checkpoint, a standalone differencing disk, an interrupted merge, or a broken VM configuration. The absence of a GUI checkpoint does not make the file disposable.
The VM will not start
Do not create a new parent, rename files, or attach a random child disk. Check whether the recorded parent exists at the expected path. If the parent or another chain layer is missing, restore the complete chain from backup or escalate to a Hyper-V or backup specialist.

Preserve the files and seek qualified help when the parent is missing, the chain is ambiguous or corrupt, a production VM will not start, a backup failure is unresolved, or the host lacks enough space for a merge. Pass-through disks, shared VHDX configurations, and synthetic Fibre Channel have checkpoint limitations documented by Microsoft, so do not assume every attached disk supports the same workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an AVHD file a virus?
Usually no. In a Hyper-V VM folder, it is normally a differencing virtual-disk component. Verify its location and ownership before taking action.
Can I recover files from an AVHD alone?
Do not assume so. Recovery generally requires the parent disk and every other layer in the chain.
Does deleting a checkpoint delete VM data?
It removes the ability to return to that point and merges later changes into the parent. It should be treated as a destructive checkpoint-management action, not simple file cleanup.

Why is an AVHDX larger than expected?
It grows as the guest writes blocks after the checkpoint. Its physical size reflects accumulated changes, not the full virtual disk capacity.
Can I convert AVHD to VHDX by renaming it?
No. An extension change is not a format conversion. Use supported Hyper-V conversion or merge workflows after the chain is understood.
