The AI application discovers what a server can do, invokes a suitable tool through a structured request, and uses the result in its answer or workflow. It is not the name of one universal Amazon AI product: AWS Marketplace’s MCP server is a specific example, built to help people discover, evaluate, research, and prepare proposals for Marketplace solutions.
What “Amazon MCP” means—and what it does not
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. AWS describes it as a standard for communication between AI applications and external tools or data sources. In practical terms, an MCP client—often an AI application or agent—connects to an MCP server. The server advertises capabilities, accepts appropriately structured requests, and returns results for the client to use.
“Amazon MCP” can therefore mean either AWS’s use of the general protocol or a particular AWS-hosted MCP service, depending on where you encounter the phrase. The clearest concrete example in AWS’s materials is the AWS Marketplace MCP endpoint, which supports work involving AWS Marketplace solutions. That service is not the protocol itself, and it does not mean every Amazon service automatically has an MCP server.
- MCP: the open client-server protocol.
- An MCP server: a service that makes a defined set of capabilities available over MCP.
- An MCP client: the AI application or agent that connects, discovers capabilities, and makes requests.
- A tool: a callable operation exposed by a server, such as searching a catalog.
MCP is an integration mechanism, not an AI model. It standardizes how compatible clients and servers communicate; it does not decide which model an organization uses, grant an agent unrestricted access, or make every service compatible without implementation work.

How an MCP interaction works
A typical interaction has four stages. The model may help decide what information or action is useful, but the client handles protocol communication and the server executes the requested operation.
- Connect: The AI application connects to a compatible server using a supported transport. A client and server must be able to communicate using compatible protocol versions and connection behavior.
- Discover capabilities: The client asks what the server offers and receives descriptions and schemas. In MCP, a client can use methods such as
tools/listto discover tools. - Invoke a capability: If a tool fits the task, the client sends a structured request, commonly using
tools/call. The server validates the input and performs the operation it supports. - Use the result: The server returns structured output. The AI application can present it, reason over it, or use it as an input to a later step in a multi-step workflow.
For example, if someone asks an AI assistant to find Marketplace solutions for a need, an MCP-enabled client could discover relevant tools, request a search, and use the returned information to answer. The server does the Marketplace-facing work; MCP provides the agreed communication pattern between that server and its client. The particular tools, input fields, results, and permissions depend on the server.
This division matters when troubleshooting: a connection can succeed while a requested tool is missing; a tool can be available while its input is invalid; and a successful call can still return information that is incomplete for the user’s decision. “MCP connected” is not the same as “the entire workflow is correct.”
What MCP servers can expose
A server may expose three kinds of capabilities. They serve related but different purposes, and a server does not have to provide every type.

| Prompts | Reusable prompt templates that help structure an interaction. | Guide a client through a recurring task. |
Tool schemas are important because they tell a client what inputs an operation expects. A clear schema can help the model and client form valid requests, but it does not replace server-side validation. The server must still reject malformed or unauthorized input rather than assuming the model will always call it correctly.

What AWS Marketplace MCP is for
AWS Marketplace MCP is a specific service for Marketplace-related discovery and evaluation. AWS documents six stateless tools covering report guidelines, solution search, solution details, related solutions, deep solution research, and feedback. Those categories suggest a workflow from finding options through gathering more context; they do not establish that the service makes a purchasing decision for the user.
The documented endpoint is in the us-east-1 region. The API reference describes MCP over Streamable HTTP with JSON-RPC 2.0, and the developer guide documents initialize, tools/list, and tools/call. For the documented Marketplace service, the endpoint requires no authentication. That service-specific detail should not be generalized to other AWS services or MCP servers: authentication requirements vary by server and deployment.
The tools are described as stateless. In general, this means a caller should not assume a prior call has created conversational state on the server. The client or agent is responsible for carrying forward context it needs between calls. Check the particular server’s documentation for exact tool names, schemas, output formats, limits, and current behavior before building an integration; the categories above are not a substitute for those definitions.

Why teams use MCP with AWS and other services
Without a common protocol, a team may need to build a separate integration for each combination of AI client and external service. MCP gives compatible clients a standardized way to discover and interact with compatible servers, which can reduce that integration duplication. It does not eliminate integration engineering: each server still has to implement and document its capabilities, and each deployment needs operational and security decisions.
AWS’s Amazon Quick example illustrates the broader pattern: an assistant can connect to project-management tools to create tickets, look up issues, or update statuses. The useful distinction is that MCP standardizes the connection and capability exchange; it does not make an operation read-only or harmless. A tool’s actual behavior comes from the server and its permissions.

Before connecting a server, establish what it can do, what data it can access, and whether it can change external state. A read-only search tool has a different risk profile from a tool that can update records. Useful controls include least-privilege permissions, validated inputs, logs of calls, explicit confirmation for destructive actions, error handling, compatibility testing, and customer-facing documentation. AWS integration guidance calls out these implementation concerns alongside JSON-RPC 2.0, capability discovery, authentication and session management, and JSON Schema definitions.
Choosing or building an AWS MCP integration
“Supports MCP” is not enough information to choose a server or plan a production integration. Compare the client and server as a working pair, and check the details that affect the workflow you need.

AWS’s managed MCP Server guidance describes authenticated AWS access, current AWS documentation, sandboxed script execution, and workflow guidance. Those are properties of that managed offering as described by AWS, not a guarantee about every MCP server. Verify the actual controls and scope of the particular service you plan to use.
Protocol versions and session behavior
MCP evolves, so version compatibility belongs in deployment planning rather than being assumed. AWS AgentCore documentation distinguishes protocol versions through 2025-11-25 from 2026-07-28 and later for elicitation and sampling: the earlier versions require stateful mode for those interactions because requests are delivered over an open session, while the later versions can support those multi-round-trip interactions without stateful mode. This distinction applies to those interaction patterns, not to every MCP request.
Before enabling elicitation or sampling, verify the versions supported by both the client and server and confirm the session behavior of the transport you are using. A feature being available in a protocol version does not prove that a particular client or service implements it.

Is Amazon MCP required to use Amazon services?
No. MCP is one way an AI application can interact with compatible external capabilities. The AWS Marketplace MCP service is useful for a client that supports MCP and needs its Marketplace tools, but the protocol is not a requirement for ordinary use of Amazon or AWS services. Services can also be accessed through their own interfaces and integrations.
Likewise, using AWS does not automatically make an AI assistant an MCP client. The assistant needs MCP support, and it needs to be configured to connect to a server that exposes the capabilities relevant to the task.

MCP is a general integration standard; it is not itself a website screenshot service. If the goal is to have an AI agent capture a web page, use a server that exposes screenshot tools rather than assuming the AWS Marketplace server does that job. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, with the MCP tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a direct API call, the following cURL command requests a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API’s options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. In an application, keep the key on the server side rather than exposing it in public client code.

Troubleshooting an MCP connection
When an integration fails, isolate the layer rather than treating every problem as a protocol failure.
- The client cannot connect: Confirm the configured endpoint and transport match the server’s documentation, and that the network can reach it. For a remote service, distinguish a network or endpoint issue from a request the server received and rejected.
- The client connects but sees no tools: Check capability discovery and the client’s handling of the server’s advertised capabilities. A server need not expose tools just because it supports MCP; it may instead expose resources or prompts, or the expected capability may not be available.
- A tool call is rejected: Compare the request with the tool’s published schema, including required fields and types. The model’s interpretation of a tool description is not a substitute for validating its actual input requirements.
- Authorization fails: Check the credentials and permissions required by that specific server. Do not assume the no-auth behavior documented for AWS Marketplace MCP applies to a different MCP endpoint.
- Calls fail intermittently or lose context: Check error handling and session behavior. A stateless tool should not be expected to remember context from an earlier call unless the service documents that behavior; retain needed context in the client.
- A feature works in one client but not another: Compare supported protocol versions, transports, and feature implementations on both sides. Verify support for the particular capability involved, especially for session-dependent interactions.
- A tool makes an unexpected change: Review the tool’s documented effect and the permissions used by the server. Restrict access, validate input, log calls, and require explicit confirmation for destructive actions.
For a production system, treat schemas, permissions, logs, error paths, version compatibility, and user confirmation as part of the integration—not optional polish after a successful demo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MCP mean Amazon’s AI model?
No. MCP means Model Context Protocol, an integration standard; it is distinct from an AI model.
Can an MCP server expose data without offering callable tools?
Yes. MCP distinguishes tools, resources, and prompts, and a server need not provide all three.
Is AWS Marketplace MCP the same service as AWS’s managed MCP Server guidance?
They are discussed as distinct AWS offerings: Marketplace MCP focuses on Marketplace work, while the managed-server guidance describes authenticated AWS access and related capabilities.
