Adfin is a UK-focused platform that helps businesses collect invoice payments, reconcile them automatically and chase overdue customers. It combines payment requests and invoices with direct debit, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, open banking, bank-transfer matching, recurring payments, instalment plans and automated credit control.
Despite the original “bill payments” description, Adfin is not mainly a consumer service for paying household bills. It is designed to help sole traders, freelancers and small companies get their own commercial invoices paid.
The small-business payment problem Adfin targets
For many small service businesses, getting paid involves a repetitive chain of manual tasks:

- Provide bank details or a payment link.
- Wait for the customer to pay.
- Check the bank account.
- Match the payment to the correct invoice.
- Update the accounting system.
- Chase the customer if payment is late.
Large companies can assign this work to accounts-receivable teams. A sole trader or small-company owner often does it personally. Adfin’s proposition is to put payment collection, reconciliation and credit control into one workflow.

What Adfin actually does
Adfin began with the idea that a business should be able to send an invoice or payment request while allowing the customer to choose a suitable payment method. Its current product is broader: it is a payment-collection and credit-control layer for businesses that invoice customers.
According to Adfin’s business product page, the platform combines:
- Invoice and payment-request creation
- Direct debit
- Card payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay
- Open-banking payments
- Bank transfers with automatic matching
- Recurring payments and instalment plans
- Payment links, including reusable links
- Automated email, WhatsApp and SMS chasing
- Integrations with Xero and QuickBooks
- A central credit-control dashboard
That makes Adfin more than a payment gateway, but it does not make it a replacement for full accounting software. Its main role is to help collect and manage money owed to the business.
How a payment could work in practice
Imagine a UK consultant sends a £2,000 invoice to a client. The client can pay by bank transfer, card, open banking or direct debit, depending on the options presented by Adfin and the business’s setup.
When the payment arrives, Adfin says it can match it to the relevant invoice and synchronise the result with Xero or QuickBooks. If the invoice remains unpaid, the business can use configured follow-up messages. A large invoice could instead be divided into instalments.
This does not guarantee faster payment or eliminate disputes. It reduces the number of separate tools and manual decisions involved in collecting the money.
Payment methods and ways to raise money
Adfin’s documentation lists several different payment formats. They are not interchangeable:

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
- Single invoice: a formal invoice intended to be paid once.
- Recurring invoice: a new invoice is generated on each cycle.
- Instalment plan: one invoice is split into multiple payments.
- Schedule: recurring payment requests without creating a new invoice or PDF each time.
- One-off payment request: a request for payment without creating an invoice.
- Reusable payment link: one link that can be shared repeatedly.
- Phone payment: card details entered while speaking to the customer.
The distinction between a recurring invoice and a recurring schedule matters for bookkeeping. A recurring invoice creates a separate invoice for each cycle; a recurring schedule creates repeated payment requests without a new invoice each time. The full list is documented in Adfin’s payment-raising guide.
Automatic reconciliation and bank transfers
Adfin says its bank-transfer workflow provides business-specific payment details and attempts to match incoming money to the right invoice, including cases where a customer leaves out or enters the wrong reference. That can be useful for businesses that prefer bank transfers but currently inspect their bank feed manually.
Adfin’s stated advantage is not that customers must switch to cards or direct debit. A business can continue accepting bank transfers while adding payment links, allocation and payment-status tracking around them. Details are available in Adfin’s bank-transfer documentation.
Credit control and automated chasing
Adfin positions its credit-control tools as a way to automate reminders through email, WhatsApp and SMS. It says its agents can adapt the timing and channel of messages to individual customers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Those are product claims rather than independently verified performance results. Before relying on automated chasing, a business should check how much control it has over message templates, timing, approval, branding, opt-outs and WhatsApp or SMS consent. Automated reminders can save time, but an inappropriate message can damage a client relationship.
Xero and QuickBooks: complement, not replacement
Adfin integrates with Xero and QuickBooks. Invoice-based workflows can be imported from those systems, while Adfin-native features such as schedules, reusable links and one-off payment requests are created in Adfin.
There is an important edge case: Adfin says one-off payment requests and schedule payments do not automatically sync to accounting software by default. Users must enable the relevant Sync payments without an invoice setting.

Adfin pricing
Adfin’s pricing page listed the following figures during August 2026:
- Standard payment collection: 1% plus 20p per successful payment.
- Direct debit and bank payments: the percentage fee is capped at £4.
- Standard credit control: free.
- Enhanced credit control: an additional 0.3% when used.
- Adfin Custom: £36 per month to use the business’s own name rather than Adfin for direct-debit collections.
- Chargebacks: £15 per case.
- Phone card payments: an additional 0.5%.
- Premium cards: an additional 1%.
- Super-premium cards: an additional 2%.
- High-value direct debits: an additional 0.30% on amounts above £2,000.
There is no monthly minimum or minimum contract length listed on the pricing page. Fees and eligibility can change, so businesses should check the current official pricing before signing up.
Worked examples
Using the published 1% plus 20p formula:
- A £100 payment would cost £1.20 before any applicable additions.
- A £500 direct-debit or bank payment would reach the £4 cap.
- A £1,200 direct-debit or bank payment would also be subject to the £4 cap, before any supplementary fee.
The cap does not necessarily apply in the same way to card transactions. Card type, phone payments and other circumstances can add charges. For very small payments, the fixed 20p component also represents a larger percentage of the transaction.
When does Adfin settle payments?
Adfin lists the following settlement timings:
- Open banking: same day.
- Bank transfers and cards: T+2.
- Direct debit: T+3.
- Settlement schedule: daily on weekdays.
“Daily settlement” does not mean every payment reaches the business’s bank account on the day the customer pays. The payment method and settlement timetable determine the actual timing.
Who can use Adfin?
Adfin’s eligibility documentation lists registered sole traders, private and public companies, certain partnerships and associations, charities and other non-profits, and government organisations. The documented availability is currently concentrated in the UK, Guernsey and Jersey.

Eligibility is not automatic. Onboarding includes KYC and AML checks, and Adfin says it currently supports lower-risk industries. A business can have an eligible legal structure and still be rejected or delayed because of its industry, ownership, geography, transaction activity or compliance profile. See Adfin’s eligibility guidance.
Likely fits include consultants, marketing agencies, software and IT-support businesses, accountants, design studios, virtual assistants, property managers, freelancers and other invoice-based service businesses.

- Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
- Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.

- Perfect for POS, Banking, Loyalty, Access Control, ID verification and other applications.
Retailers, restaurants, coffee shops, e-commerce businesses and cash- or point-of-sale-first operations are weaker fits. They may need a specialist checkout, marketplace or point-of-sale system instead.
Regulatory and trust considerations
Adfin says it works with regulated payment partners rather than providing every payment service directly. Its payment-services information identifies partners including Adyen N.V., Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. and Tink Financial Services Ltd.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This distinction matters. Adfin’s software layer covers invoicing, payment orchestration, reconciliation and credit control, while underlying payment services are delivered through third-party providers. Adfin should not simply be described as a bank or as the direct issuer of every payment method.
A customer may see the underlying provider’s name on their bank statement unless the business uses Adfin Custom. Businesses should explain this clearly to customers because an unexpected statement descriptor can lead to queries, rejected payments or disputes. More information is available on Adfin’s payment-acceptance page.
Adfin’s origin and funding
In July 2024, TechCrunch reported that Adfin was founded by fintech executives Ciprian Diaconasu and Rupert Pope. It also reported a $4.9 million seed round co-led by Index Ventures and Visionaries Club, with additional fintech founders and executives participating as angel investors.
That is historical funding context, not a statement of Adfin’s current valuation or total funding. The early proposition focused on helping tradespeople, lawyers and small companies collect invoices and automate reminders. The product has since been described more broadly as a credit-control and accounts-receivable platform.
Adfin compared with the alternatives
Adfin versus GoCardless
GoCardless remains a natural choice for a business whose main requirement is direct debit. Adfin is more relevant when the business wants direct debit alongside cards, bank transfers, open banking, payment requests, reconciliation and credit control.
Best Value
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Neither is automatically cheaper. The result depends on payment method, transaction size, plan, geography and whether the value of automated chasing and reconciliation is included in the calculation.
Adfin versus Stripe
Stripe is often the stronger fit for online checkout, e-commerce, developer-led integrations, card payments and businesses already built around the Stripe ecosystem. Adfin is more specifically aimed at invoice collection and credit control for service businesses.
A business using Stripe may need to assemble more of the chasing and accounts-receivable workflow around it. Adfin’s comparison of Stripe is vendor-produced and should not be treated as an independent market test. Check Stripe’s current UK pricing directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdfin versus Xero or QuickBooks
Xero and QuickBooks are accounting platforms that can provide invoicing and record payments. Adfin adds a collection and credit-control layer. A business may use both rather than choosing one as a complete substitute for the other.
If a business only needs basic accounting and occasional invoices, adding another platform may not justify the cost or operational complexity.
Adfin versus manual bank transfers
Manual bank transfer is inexpensive and familiar, especially when customers pay reliably. Its hidden cost is owner or bookkeeper time spent checking accounts, matching payments, correcting references and chasing overdue invoices.
Adfin makes the strongest case where that administrative work is frequent or late payments create a cash-flow problem. It may be poor value for a business with occasional, low-value invoices and almost no collection work.

Potential failure points
- Geography: businesses outside the UK, Guernsey and Jersey should not assume they can sign up.
- Industry: higher-risk or unsupported industries may fail onboarding.
- Compliance: KYC and AML checks can delay or prevent approval.
- Statement names: customers may see a payment partner rather than the business name.
- Accounting sync: payment requests without invoices require the relevant sync setting.
- Recurring workflows: recurring invoices and recurring schedules have different accounting consequences.
- Settlement: daily payout does not mean instant settlement.
- Card costs: premium cards, phone payments and other categories may add fees.
- Chargebacks: the listed £15 fee is only one part of the operational cost.
- Messaging: automated communication must be appropriate, compliant and consistent with the customer relationship.
What to check before switching
- Confirm that your country, legal structure and industry are eligible.
- Calculate the real fee for your typical payment sizes and methods.
- Check settlement timing against your cash-flow needs.
- Confirm how Xero or QuickBooks synchronisation works for each payment type.
- Check what customers will see on bank statements.
- Review the controls for email, WhatsApp and SMS reminders.
- Ask how chargebacks, failed payments, refunds and disputes are handled.
- Understand whether existing direct-debit mandates can be migrated.
- Test the customer experience before moving all invoices to the platform.
Verdict
Adfin is best understood as a UK payment-collection and credit-control platform for invoice-based service businesses. It combines several payment methods with reconciliation and automated chasing, rather than focusing on only direct debit, online checkout or accounting.
It is most compelling for a consultant, agency, freelancer, accountant or other small business that regularly invoices customers, spends time matching bank payments or suffers from late payment. It is less compelling for a US business, a cash- or POS-first retailer, an e-commerce operation needing specialist checkout, or a company that only wants occasional payment links.
The central question is not whether Adfin replaces GoCardless, Stripe, Xero, QuickBooks or manual bank transfers in every case. It is whether combining collection and credit control saves more time and cash-flow friction than the platform’s transaction fees and added complexity.
