A web proxy is an intermediary between a client and a destination server. Your browser or application sends a request to the proxy; the proxy may forward it, answer from a cache, filter or authenticate it, change parts of it, and return the response. The key question is whose side it serves: a forward proxy represents clients going out to Internet services, while a reverse proxy represents servers receiving Internet traffic.

A proxy is therefore a placement and traffic-handling pattern, not automatically a privacy product. The operator may be able to observe, log, block, or modify traffic, and encryption, anonymity, and performance depend on the configuration.

What is a proxy server?

MDN describes the core behavior this way: “A proxy intercepts requests and serves back responses; it may forward the requests, or not (for example in the case of a cache), and it may modify it (for example changing its headers, at the boundary between two networks).”

  1. The client sends a request to the proxy.
  2. The proxy decides whether to serve a cached response, reject the request, or contact the destination.
  3. The destination responds to the proxy.
  4. The proxy can cache, inspect, transform, or log the response before returning it to the client.

The proxy can run on the same device, on an organization’s network, in a data center, or at the edge of a cloud service. “Proxy” alone does not tell you whether it is forward or reverse, transparent or modifying, trustworthy or hostile, fast or slow.

How does a reverse proxy differ from a forward proxy?

Question Forward proxy Reverse proxy
Whose side does it serve? A client, user, or client network One or more origin/application servers
Traffic direction Outbound requests from clients to Internet destinations Inbound requests from Internet clients to backend servers
What does the destination see? Often the proxy’s network address instead of the client’s, depending on protocol and configuration The origin sees the reverse proxy as its immediate client; trusted forwarding headers can preserve client information
Typical reasons Policy enforcement, filtering, authentication, logging, and caching Load balancing, TLS termination, caching, buffering, filtering, and reducing direct origin exposure
Who normally configures it? The client, browser, application, or client-network administrator The website or service operator

Forward proxy

A forward proxy is configured by clients or by the network through which they connect. A company might require browsers to use one so it can apply access rules, authenticate users, record requests, or cache common downloads. A school or laboratory can use the same pattern to restrict categories of destinations.

A forward proxy can make a destination see the proxy’s address rather than the client’s, but that is not a promise of anonymity. The proxy operator may still see metadata or decrypted content, and HTTPS behavior depends on whether the proxy merely tunnels the encrypted connection or performs authorized interception. Never send credentials through an unknown proxy.

Reverse proxy

A reverse proxy is placed in front of application servers. It accepts the public request, selects an upstream server, and relays the response. It can distribute traffic among several servers, cache static content, buffer slow clients, terminate TLS, apply request filtering, and keep origin addresses out of ordinary public DNS and connections.

These controls can improve resilience or reduce direct exposure, but a reverse proxy is not a blanket security or speed guarantee. Results depend on cache rules, capacity, TLS settings, origin protection, application behavior, and failure handling. NGINX, for example, can proxy to HTTP and non-HTTP application servers; a managed CDN or reverse-proxy service supplies a different operational model and different controls.

Other ways to classify proxies

Transparent and non-transparent proxies

At the HTTP layer, a transparent proxy forwards a request without changing it. A non-transparent proxy changes some aspect, such as headers, routing, or authentication data. This is a separate axis from forward versus reverse: either placement can be transparent or modifying.

HTTP proxy tunnels

The HTTP CONNECT method asks a proxy to create a two-way connection to a destination. It is commonly used to carry TLS traffic through an HTTP proxy: after the tunnel is established, the encrypted HTTPS conversation travels inside it. A proxy may disable CONNECT, allow only selected destination ports, or apply authentication, so support is not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PAC files

A Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) file contains JavaScript that tells a client whether to connect directly or use a particular proxy for each request. PAC rules can route internal hostnames directly while sending public traffic through a gateway. Treat PAC files as configuration with security consequences: an incorrect or malicious rule can redirect sensitive traffic.

Forwarding headers

Across proxy hops, Forwarded is the standardized header for connection information. Deployments also commonly use X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Host, and X-Forwarded-Proto; Via identifies proxy involvement. An application must trust these values only when they were set by a known proxy and sanitized at the boundary. A client can send a header with any name, so an untrusted, client-supplied X-Forwarded-For is not proof of the real source address.

What can a web proxy do?

  • Cache: return a stored response instead of contacting the origin, subject to freshness and validation rules.
  • Filter: allow or deny destinations, methods, content types, or request patterns.
  • Authenticate: require users, devices, or services to prove identity before forwarding.
  • Log: record requests, responses, timing, and errors for operations or compliance.
  • Load-balance: distribute reverse-proxy requests among healthy upstream servers.
  • Terminate TLS: decrypt HTTPS at the proxy and send traffic to an upstream over a configured connection.
  • Transform: add or remove headers, rewrite URLs, compress content, or adapt requests between network boundaries.
  • Buffer and shield: absorb slow clients or bursts so application servers have more predictable connections.

These are functions, not exclusive product categories. A single deployment can authenticate users, cache assets, filter requests, and balance load at once.

When is a forward proxy useful?

  • Managed outbound access: route employee or device traffic through one policy point.
  • Auditing: maintain a record of destinations and failures where law and policy permit.
  • Controlled egress: restrict which hosts, ports, or protocols servers may reach.
  • Shared caching: reduce repeated downloads on a constrained network.
  • Testing: reproduce an application’s behavior from a controlled network location or with deliberate headers.

Decide first whether HTTPS should be tunneled with CONNECT or inspected through an explicitly managed trust setup. Inspection requires careful certificate, key, access-control, and privacy governance; it is not the default consequence of using an HTTP proxy.

When is a reverse proxy useful?

  • Multiple application servers: route requests by hostname, path, region, or health.
  • TLS at the edge: manage public certificates at one layer while controlling the origin connection separately.
  • Static caching: serve cacheable assets close to users without repeatedly waking the application.
  • Origin protection: expose the proxy address publicly and restrict direct origin access with network rules.
  • Protocol boundaries: present a consistent HTTP interface while proxying to supported upstream services.

A self-managed reverse proxy such as NGINX gives direct control over routing and headers. A managed CDN or reverse-proxy service reduces infrastructure work but introduces provider-specific configuration, trust, and cost considerations. Verify exactly which protocols, cache directives, limits, logs, and failover behaviors a chosen service supports.

How to choose the right proxy approach

  1. Identify the direction. If clients need controlled Internet egress, start with a forward proxy. If Internet users need to reach your application fleet, start with a reverse proxy.
  2. Name the required function. Write down whether you need filtering, authentication, logging, caching, TLS handling, load balancing, origin protection, or several of these.
  3. Check protocol fit. Confirm HTTP and HTTPS behavior, CONNECT support, permitted ports, non-HTTP upstream support, and whether a PAC file or application-specific proxy setting is available.
  4. Define the trust boundary. Decide who operates the proxy, what it can observe or alter, where logs go, and which forwarding headers your application will accept.
  5. Plan failure behavior. Specify timeouts, health checks, retries, cache staleness rules, and what happens when the proxy or an upstream is unavailable.
  6. Test from the real client path. Verify authentication, redirects, cookies, WebSockets or other upgraded connections, client IP handling, TLS certificates, and cache headers before production.

Security, privacy, and performance realities

A proxy changes who handles a request; it does not automatically make the request private. The operator may see destination names, timing, headers, and—when traffic is terminated or inspected—content and credentials. Use encryption to the correct endpoint, restrict administrative access, protect proxy logs, and document retention.

Reverse-proxy caching can lower origin work and latency for cacheable responses, while forwarding every request through an extra hop can add latency. Measurements depend on geography, connection reuse, cache hit rate, payload size, upstream health, and configuration. Do not assume that a proxy is faster merely because it is closer to the user.

Troubleshooting common proxy failures

407 Proxy Authentication Required

The proxy expects credentials. Check the configured username, password, token, or enterprise identity method; ensure the client is actually using the intended proxy and that credentials are not being sent to an untrusted endpoint.

CONNECT or “tunnel failed” errors

The proxy may not support CONNECT, may block the destination port, or may deny that hostname. Test an allowed HTTPS destination, review the proxy’s port policy, and use a proxy mode that supports the required protocol.

Redirect loops or incorrect HTTP/HTTPS links

A reverse proxy may terminate TLS while the application believes the request is HTTP. Configure the trusted Forwarded or X-Forwarded-Proto value and the application’s external URL, while rejecting client-forged headers.

Wrong client IP in logs

Confirm which proxy inserts the forwarding header, strip untrusted incoming copies, and configure the application’s trusted-proxy list. Do not treat arbitrary client headers as authoritative.

Stale or missing content

Inspect cache-control headers, cache keys, bypass rules, and purge behavior. Personalized responses generally need different caching rules from public static assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intermittent 502, 503, or timeout responses

Check upstream health, DNS, connection limits, TLS compatibility, proxy timeouts, and retry policy. A retry can increase load during an incident, so use bounded retries and health checks rather than infinite forwarding.

A practical proxy-adjacent use case: reliable website screenshots

Screenshot automation often crosses the same boundaries: the capture client must reach a site, follow redirects, handle cookies, and deal with pages that fail or challenge automated traffic. You can build this yourself with a browser, proxy settings, wait conditions, and cleanup scripts. If you need an API rather than browser infrastructure, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The service accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also offers full-page and element captures, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, PDFs with paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable caching TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage information, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently asked questions

Does a proxy replace a VPN?

Not necessarily. “Proxy” describes an intermediary role; a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between a device or network and a VPN endpoint. Compare the actual protocols, encryption, routing, logging, and trust model rather than relying on the label.

Can a proxy see HTTPS passwords?

A proxy that only tunnels HTTPS normally cannot read the encrypted application data. A proxy that terminates or deliberately inspects TLS can, if the client trusts its inspection certificate. The proxy’s configuration and operator determine which case applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one request pass through several proxies?

Yes. Each hop can add latency, alter headers, cache data, or impose its own access policy. The receiving application should define which hops are trusted before using forwarded identity information.

Is a reverse proxy the same as a load balancer?

No. Load balancing is one function a reverse proxy may perform. A reverse proxy can also terminate TLS, cache, filter, rewrite, and buffer traffic without distributing it across multiple servers.
