A thumbnail image is a small preview of a larger image, video, document, or other digital item. It gives people a quick visual cue so they can recognize, scan, or select the full item without opening it. A thumbnail may be a separate small file, a rendition generated for a particular display, or an image cropped by an app; there is no single universal thumbnail size or shape.
What a thumbnail image does
Thumbnails reduce the time needed to browse visual content. File managers, photo galleries, search results, media players, document lists, and video platforms use them to show many items at once. Selecting a thumbnail normally opens the original image, starts the video, opens a document, or follows a link.
The preview can be generated when content is uploaded, created on demand by a server, embedded with the original file, or produced by the application displaying it. Apple describes embedded photo thumbnails as image companions that let software review a captured photo quickly. Windows uses thumbnail views for pictures, videos, music, and documents.

The right dimensions depend on the service, device, and view. An application may preserve the source aspect ratio, crop every item into a uniform tile, or show a document icon instead of a miniature page. A responsive webpage may also select different source files for different screen widths. The size you see on screen is therefore not necessarily the intrinsic pixel dimensions of the thumbnail file.

Platform-specific examples
YouTube regular videos
YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends a 3,840 × 2,160-pixel custom image, a minimum width of 640 pixels, JPG or PNG format, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube also sets different upload-size limits for mobile and desktop. These are YouTube recommendations and limits, not a definition that applies to every thumbnail elsewhere.
YouTube Shorts
For Shorts, the same guidance recommends 2,160 × 3,840 pixels, at least 640 pixels high, and a 9:16 ratio. YouTube notes that a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail may instead appear as an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail in some mobile surfaces. Design important text and faces so they remain clear after that possible crop.
YouTube podcast playlists
Podcast playlists use a 1:1 thumbnail recommendation rather than the 16:9 recommendation for regular videos. Treat the playlist artwork as a separate requirement from individual episode artwork.

Google’s video-search guidance lists a 60 × 30-pixel minimum and prefers larger images. It accepts BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF. The image must be available to Googlebot at a stable URL. Google also specifies criteria concerning transparency. These are requirements for Google’s video features, not YouTube upload specifications.
Windows thumbnail views
Microsoft’s Windows guidance shows pictures and videos cropped to squares in picture and video modes, while document and music lists can preserve the original aspect ratio. Its example recommends a medium thumbnail preferably at least 190 pixels for a 190 × 130 display area. That example illustrates one Windows view; it is not a universal minimum.

Thumbnail, preview, icon, and original: the difference
- Thumbnail: a reduced or otherwise compact visual representation used for recognition or selection.
- Preview: a broader term for a quick look, which may be a thumbnail, a partial document, a playback frame, or a rendered page.
- Icon: a symbolic mark, often used for a file type or application; it may contain no miniature of the actual content.
- Original: the full-resolution image, complete video, or source document opened after a user selects the preview.
An application can use all four. For example, a document list might show a PDF icon when no page preview is available, while a photo grid shows cropped thumbnails of the actual pictures.
How thumbnails are made and delivered
Pre-generated files
A service can create several sizes when an image is uploaded and store each as a separate file. This makes repeated listing fast, at the cost of storage and processing time during upload.
On-demand renditions
A server can resize or crop the source when a particular size is requested, then cache the result. This supports many layouts but requires careful cache keys and protection against expensive or malicious image requests.
Client-side display
The browser or app can load one source and scale it visually. This is simple, but downloading a large original for a tiny card wastes bandwidth. Responsive image selection is usually better for webpages.
Lazy loading and responsive sources
Web pages may defer off-screen thumbnails and choose different files for different viewport widths. Keep the source image’s intrinsic dimensions separate from its CSS display size, and provide enough resolution for high-density screens without sending a needlessly large file.

Accessibility: does a thumbnail need alt text?
Usually, yes when the thumbnail communicates information or performs an action. WCAG 2.2 Guideline 1.1 says: “Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.”

Describe the relevant subject, not the filename or the words “thumbnail image.” For a photograph of a red bicycle beside a lake, useful alt text could be “Red bicycle beside a lake.” Keep it concise and consider nearby headings or captions so you do not repeat information.
Thumbnail used as a link or button
The alternative should communicate the destination or action. If a linked image opens an article titled “How to back up an iPhone,” alt text such as “How to back up an iPhone” is more useful than a literal description that omits the link’s purpose.
Decorative thumbnail
If the image adds no information and adjacent text already provides the same purpose, use the implementation appropriate for a decorative image (commonly an empty alt attribute) so assistive technology does not announce redundant content.
Google Search Central calls alt text the most important image metadata attribute and says it improves accessibility for people who cannot see images, including screen-reader users and people on low-bandwidth connections. Do not stuff keywords into alt text.

Prevent layout shift on webpages
Set HTML width and height values that reflect the image’s intrinsic aspect ratio. Browsers can then reserve the correct space before the file arrives, reducing or preventing cumulative layout movement. CSS can still make the image responsive, for example with max-width:100%; height:auto. If your design applies a deliberate crop, reserve the ratio of the cropped box and use an explicit object-fit strategy.
Creating a reliable thumbnail workflow
- Identify the destination. Decide whether the thumbnail is for a grid, list, video platform, search feature, or a linked webpage.
- Read that service’s current rules. Confirm ratio, minimum dimensions, accepted formats, file-size limits, transparency, and upload limits for the exact product and content type.
- Choose crop behavior. Preserve the source ratio when the whole image matters; use a consistent crop for a scannable grid; keep faces, logos, and text inside the safe area.
- Generate appropriate variants. Make only the sizes your layouts need, retain sufficient detail for high-density displays, and keep originals separate.
- Provide text alternatives. Write contextual alt text for informative images and action-oriented alternatives for linked thumbnails.
- Reserve layout space. Include width and height or an equivalent aspect-ratio box before the image loads.
- Test real surfaces. Check desktop and mobile layouts, keyboard and screen-reader access, slow connections, failed images, and the platform’s own crop previews.

Troubleshooting thumbnail problems
The image looks blurry
Check whether a small source is being enlarged, whether the platform generated a lower-resolution variant, and whether a high-density display needs a larger source. Do not confuse CSS display size with intrinsic pixel dimensions.
The subject is cut off
The consuming app may be applying a fixed crop. Reframe the source, choose a safer focal area, or supply the platform’s recommended ratio instead of assuming the original ratio will be preserved.

The page jumps while thumbnails load
Add accurate width and height attributes or an aspect-ratio container. Confirm that responsive sources preserve the same intended ratio.
A screen reader announcement is unhelpful
Replace filenames and generic phrases with concise contextual alt text. If the thumbnail is interactive, describe its destination or action; if decorative, avoid redundant announcements.

Verify that the image URL is stable and accessible to Googlebot, meets the 60 × 30-pixel minimum, uses a supported format, and follows Google’s transparency criteria. These checks concern Google video features, not YouTube uploads.

Can a thumbnail be the same file as the original image?
Yes. An app may display the original at a smaller CSS size, although a dedicated smaller rendition usually saves bandwidth.
Are thumbnails always generated automatically?

Why do two apps show different crops of the same photo?
Each app can choose its own aspect ratio, focal-point rules, and display mode; a square grid crop and an original-ratio list preview may both be intentional.
Should I put text on a thumbnail?
Only when it remains legible after the service’s crop and on small screens. Keep the image’s main subject recognizable and test the actual surface where it will appear.
