An operating system (OS) is the core software that manages a computer’s hardware and provides common services for applications. It connects people and programs to the processor, memory, storage, display, keyboard, camera, network adapter, and other components. The OS also supplies security, file management, networking, updates, recovery tools, and user interfaces.
In practical terms, an OS is a resource manager, hardware translator, security boundary, application platform, and user interface—not merely the screen that appears after login.
What does an operating system do?
NIST defines an operating system as software that manages hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs: NIST’s operating-system definition. Applications request services from the OS instead of directly controlling hardware, allowing the system to share resources and enforce permissions.

Processes and applications
The OS starts and stops applications, gives them processor time, isolates them from one another, runs background services, and reports crashes or unresponsive programs. Multitasking does not mean every task is executing at exactly the same instant: the scheduler rapidly distributes work across CPU cores, pausing or prioritizing tasks as needed.
Memory management
The OS allocates RAM, protects one process from another, and uses virtual memory when physical memory is under pressure. Paging or swapping can prevent immediate failure, but storage-backed memory is much slower than RAM; virtual memory is not a replacement for having enough physical memory.
Files and storage
Operating systems provide files, folders, names, metadata, permissions, search, indexing, trash or recycle-bin behavior, encryption tools, and ways to mount drives. A file system organizes data on a storage device; the OS supplies the interfaces and services that let users and applications work with it.
Devices and drivers
A driver lets the OS communicate with a particular device. Compatibility depends on the operating system, device model, processor architecture, driver availability, manufacturer support, and security rules. Consequently, the same printer, scanner, controller, audio interface, or graphics tablet can behave differently on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
User interfaces and accessibility
A graphical user interface (GUI) provides windows, icons, menus, panels, settings, and launchers. A command-line interface (CLI) uses a shell and typed commands. Accessibility services add screen readers, magnification, contrast controls, captions, voice control, and keyboard navigation. The desktop is an important OS component, but it is not the entire OS.
Security and accounts
Operating systems manage accounts, authentication, permissions, application isolation, code signing, secure boot, encryption, firewalls, network controls, and security updates. No brand is automatically secure: results depend on design, patching, configuration, software sources, hardware support, and user behavior.

Updates can contain security fixes, bug fixes, or feature changes. Systems may offer automatic or manual updates, rollback, restore points, recovery partitions, and recovery environments. An update is not a backup, a restore point is not necessarily a complete backup, and cloud synchronization is not always a versioned backup. Keep an independent, tested backup.
Kernel versus operating system
The kernel is the privileged core of an OS. It schedules work, protects memory, handles system calls and hardware interrupts, supports filesystems, and mediates access to devices and other protected resources. NIST calls it the principal component of an operating system: NIST’s kernel terminology.

↓
Drivers and hardware
This is a simplified model. Real systems place some drivers and services in different privilege contexts. Applications normally run in user mode, while the kernel runs in kernel mode; system calls provide the controlled boundary between them.
In everyday conversation, “operating system” usually means the complete platform—kernel, services, drivers, utilities, interface, and bundled tools. Technically, Linux is the kernel, not a complete desktop installation.
What happens when a computer starts?
- Power: electricity reaches the system.
- Firmware: UEFI on most modern PCs initializes hardware and performs checks.
- Bootloader: firmware locates a bootloader and transfers control to it.
- Kernel loading: the bootloader loads the operating-system kernel.
- Initialization: the kernel sets up memory, processors, drivers, security controls, and processes.
- Services: system services start.
- Login: the login screen or desktop appears.
Firmware is not the OS, and a bootloader is not the kernel. Secure-boot systems verify what is allowed to load. Recovery environments and live USB systems can start without replacing the installed OS.

Windows with Linux
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) runs Linux distributions and command-line tools alongside Windows; supported configurations can also run graphical Linux applications. Microsoft documents supported distributions and capabilities at the WSL overview and compatibility details at the WSL FAQ. WSL is not the same as replacing Windows with Linux: hardware access, boot behavior, services, filesystems, and performance differ.
macOS explained
macOS is Apple’s desktop operating system for Mac computers. Apple designs it together with its hardware, including current Apple-silicon Macs and earlier Intel models. The Finder desktop, system settings, Unix-based foundations, application signing, privacy controls, and platform security form a tightly integrated experience.

Apple’s integration can simplify testing, drivers, and support within the Mac product line. It also means macOS is not a general-purpose consumer license for arbitrary PCs. Users should check application, external-display, game, plug-in, professional-peripheral, and Intel-era compatibility rather than assuming a compatibility layer or virtual machine solves every case. Platform control creates different security and administration trade-offs; it does not justify claiming that macOS is universally safer than Windows.
Linux explained correctly
Linux is a kernel; distributions are complete systems
A usable Linux desktop normally combines the Linux kernel with boot tools, libraries, command-line utilities, a package manager, an installer, updates, security infrastructure, default applications, and often a desktop environment. That bundle is a distribution, such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, or Linux Mint.
Ubuntu describes Ubuntu Desktop as an open-source operating system that is free to download, use, modify, and share under its applicable licensing: Ubuntu Desktop documentation. It can also be tried from a USB stick without making permanent changes, as explained in Ubuntu’s desktop documentation.

Android, iOS, and other operating systems
Android
Android is a mobile OS built around the Linux kernel and Android platform components. It spans many manufacturers and hardware configurations, so interfaces, app distribution, and update timing can vary by manufacturer and carrier. Android is not interchangeable with Ubuntu or another conventional GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
iOS and iPadOS
Apple’s mobile operating systems are tightly integrated with Apple hardware and distributed under a controlled platform model. Their app, file-management, multitasking, and accessory behavior differs from desktop macOS.
Beyond personal computers
Operating systems also power servers, routers, industrial controllers, cameras, appliances, cars, game consoles, network equipment, mainframes, and virtual machines. Real-time operating systems prioritize predictable timing, while embedded systems are designed around a specific device job. The right OS depends on that job, not only personal preference.

Common misconceptions and failure modes
“The OS is the computer”
A computer also contains firmware, a bootloader, drivers, services, applications, and user data. The OS is the central software layer, not the physical machine and not every installed program.
“Linux is free, so the computer costs nothing”
The OS may be free to download and use, but hardware, support, training, paid applications, backups, and enterprise subscriptions can cost money.
“Windows and Linux cannot coexist”
They can coexist through dual boot, virtual machines, containers, or WSL. Dual boot runs one OS directly on the hardware at a time; a virtual machine runs one OS inside another; WSL provides an integrated Linux environment within Windows. These approaches differ in performance, hardware access, maintenance, and isolation.
“A virtual machine is the same as dual boot”
It is not. Dual boot gives the selected OS direct control while it runs. Virtualization adds a host and hypervisor layer. WSL has its own filesystem, service, boot, and hardware behavior.
“The OS brand determines security”
Patch status, account privileges, secure-boot settings, application sources, browser extensions, backups, hardware support, organizational policies, and user behavior all matter.
“The newest version is always best”
New releases can add security fixes and features while changing hardware requirements, privacy settings, administration, or application compatibility. Identify the release and edition when giving instructions.
“The OS safely stores my files”
Permissions, encryption, recovery tools, and synchronization help, but they cannot guarantee recovery from deletion, ransomware, hardware failure, or account loss. Use an independent backup strategy and test restoration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line
An operating system is the layer that turns hardware into a usable, managed platform for applications and people. Choose one according to the software and peripherals you need, the hardware you can buy or already own, update and support arrangements, security and privacy requirements, and how much technical control you want. Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, and iOS are all valid answers for different jobs; compatibility and workflow matter more than a universal ranking.
