If Excel displays a formula such as =_xlfn.TEXTJOIN(", ",TRUE,A1:A4), the current Excel calculation engine does not recognize TEXTJOIN. The workbook is usually not corrupt: it contains a function that is unavailable in the Excel version, edition, build, platform, or application currently opening it. Excel may also return #NAME?.

What does _xlfn. mean in Excel?
_xlfn. is a compatibility marker that Excel adds before a worksheet function it cannot support in the current environment. The function name immediately after the prefix tells you what is unavailable:

Why did Excel add it?
The most common situation is that someone created or edited the workbook in a newer Excel environment and it was later opened in an older one. However, “old Excel” is not the only explanation. The same symptom can result from:
- A different Office edition or installation being used.
- An outdated or incomplete Microsoft 365 build.
- A different update channel or platform, such as Mac, Windows, or Excel for the web.
- A compatibility environment or older file format.
- A third-party spreadsheet application with incomplete function support.
Therefore, the accurate diagnosis is that the current calculation engine does not recognize the function. Product names alone are not a complete compatibility guarantee. Excel 2021 or Excel 2024, for example, should not automatically be assumed to include every function available in continuously updated Microsoft 365.

Why does Excel show #NAME??
#NAME? means Excel cannot resolve a function name or another name used in the formula. When it appears with _xlfn., Excel generally cannot recognize the function after the prefix, so it cannot calculate the formula.
A visible result is not always proof that the workbook is working. In some compatibility situations, Excel may display a previously cached result even though it cannot recalculate the formula. If source data has changed, treat that result as unverified until the workbook is recalculated in a compatible environment. Exceljet’s _xlfn glossary entry describes this cached-result behavior.
How to identify the unsupported function
- Select the affected cell.
- Read the formula bar.
- Search for
_xlfn.. - Record the function name immediately after it.
- If the formula is nested, search for every occurrence because more than one function may be unsupported.
For example:
=_xlfn.XLOOKUP(E2,A:A,B:B,"Not found")Here, XLOOKUP is the function Excel cannot recognize. Also note any other compatibility markers or dynamic-array behavior that may affect the formula.
How to check the Excel version and build
In desktop Excel, open:
File → Account → About Excel
Record the product name, version, build number, and whether the installation is Microsoft 365 or a perpetual Office release. Confirm that the workbook is opening in the intended Excel installation; computers can contain multiple Office versions or applications.

How to fix _xlfn.
1. Open the workbook in a compatible Excel environment
This is usually the best solution for a live workbook that depends on modern formulas. In a compatible version, the prefix should normally disappear and the formula should calculate normally.
2. Update or repair Office
If the function should be supported but suddenly shows _xlfn., sign in to the intended Microsoft account, check for Office updates, confirm the product and build under File → Account → About Excel, restart Excel, and reopen the file. If the installation appears damaged, Office repair may help.
Updating is not a universal fix. It cannot add a function that is unavailable in the edition or release you are using.
3. Replace the formula
If the workbook must support older Excel versions, rewrite the formula using compatible features. Test replacements with representative data because they may be less readable, slower, or behaviorally different.

For a deliberately static report, open the workbook in a compatible environment, verify the calculations, select the results, and use Paste Special → Values. This removes the formulas and automatic recalculation, so it is unsuitable for a live model unless that limitation is intentional.
Examples and older-compatible alternatives
TEXTJOIN
A modern formula might be:
=TEXTJOIN(", ",TRUE,A1:A4)An incompatible environment may show:
=_xlfn.TEXTJOIN(", ",TRUE,A1:A4)For a fixed four-cell range, a basic alternative is:
=A1&", "&A2&", "&A3&", "&A4This does not fully reproduce TEXTJOIN. It does not automatically ignore empty cells or adapt cleanly to a variable-sized range without additional logic.
XLOOKUP
A modern lookup might be:
=XLOOKUP(E2,A:A,B:B,"Not found")A possible older-compatible construction is:
=IFERROR(INDEX(B:B,MATCH(E2,A:A,0)),"Not found")This is not a complete equivalent. It has different options and is less readable. Test exact matches, missing values, duplicates, blanks, and performance before using it in a production workbook. In large files, bounded ranges may perform better than full-column references.

Functions such as FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, and SEQUENCE may require dynamic-array support. Older-compatible designs may need helper columns, traditional array formulas, PivotTables, Power Query, or VBA. These are design changes rather than guaranteed one-for-one replacements.

Can you simply delete _xlfn.?
Usually not. Removing the prefix does not add support for the underlying function. Excel will still treat the function as unknown and may return #NAME?.
Use a compatible Excel environment, replace the formula, or intentionally convert the result to values instead. Save a backup before making bulk formula changes.
What happens when you share the workbook?
A workbook can calculate correctly for one person and fail for another because their Excel capabilities differ. Teams should:

- Test shared workbooks in the oldest supported environment.
- Document required functions such as
XLOOKUPorFILTER. - Provide a compatibility copy or value-only report when necessary.
- Avoid editing and resaving a modern workbook in older Excel without checking the consequences.
Changing .xlsx to .xlsm, or vice versa, does not add missing worksheet-function support. File format and calculation-engine capability are separate issues. Missing VBA references, disabled macros, and broken add-ins are also different problems from _xlfn..
Should you upgrade Excel?
Not automatically. First identify the function and check the active build, edition, installation, and application. A formula rewrite may be enough.
Microsoft 365 is the more suitable direction when you need current Excel features, continuing updates, collaboration, or use across multiple devices. Microsoft also sells Office Home 2024 as a one-time purchase, but a perpetual release may not receive every function added later to Microsoft 365.
