Usually, you cannot move a Minecraft purchase from one Microsoft account to another. First check whether the game is actually owned by the wrong account or whether the Launcher, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app is simply signed into the wrong one. If the purchase really is on an account you do not want to use, your practical options are to keep using that account, request a refund from the original seller if eligible, or buy the game again on the intended account.
Ownership differs by platform: on Windows and Xbox, check the purchasing Microsoft account; on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, the platform-store account can control the game purchase while a Microsoft account may provide connected features. Identify where the charge was made before changing accounts or paying again.
Find out which account owns the purchase
Do not buy another copy until you have checked the purchase record. A saved browser session, Xbox gamertag, or profile picture alone may not identify the account that paid.

- Sign in to each likely Microsoft account and open Microsoft account Order history. Look for Minecraft and the matching charge.
- Sign in at Minecraft.net My Games and check which games appear for the account.
- If you are on Windows, compare the signed-in account in the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. They can be different even on the same PC.
Minecraft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the confirmation email and Order history.

If the purchase is right but the Windows account is wrong
When Order history shows Minecraft on the account you want, correct the app sign-ins rather than requesting a refund. Minecraft’s guidance for Windows license error 0X803F8001 says the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app should all use the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Close Minecraft.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher. Check the account shown in the top-left dropdown next to the gamertag. Choose Log out, then Microsoft Login and Sign in with a different account. Sign in with the purchasing account.
- Open Microsoft Store and check the account icon in the top-right. If it is not the purchasing account, sign out and sign in with the correct one.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with that same account.
- Reopen the Launcher and try again.
If the accounts match and error 0X803F8001 persists, use the Minecraft Launcher support guidance to reinstall the Launcher from Microsoft Store. Minecraft’s troubleshooting steps also mention resetting Microsoft Store with WSReset. Verify the accounts first; resetting the Store does not transfer a license.
If Minecraft really was bought on the wrong Microsoft account
Signing out of that account and into another does not normally transfer the license. Minecraft’s buying guidance recommends using the Microsoft account you intend to use when purchasing. There is no general account-merge or license-transfer remedy established by the official guidance, so do not assume support can move the purchase.

Choose among these options:
- Keep using the purchasing account. This avoids paying again, but that account remains the owner. If appropriate, you can review its recovery details and security settings; changing contact information is not a license transfer.
- Request a refund from the seller. If the purchase is eligible and the refund is approved, buy on the intended account afterward.
- Buy on the intended account if needed. Consider this only after checking all Order histories and the original seller’s refund options. Otherwise, you may pay twice.
A purchase from an unauthorized reseller may not be supported by Minecraft. Avoid account sellers and services promising to transfer a license; Minecraft says account buying and selling is not permitted. See its account buying and selling guidance.
Refunds: use the store that took payment
For a purchase made directly from Microsoft or Xbox, sign in to the purchasing account, open Order history, find the game, and select Request a refund if that option is available. Provide a reason and submit the request. Microsoft says digital games are not automatically refundable; eligibility can depend on the offer, applicable law, market, and its decision. A request may take up to 72 hours to process, and an approved refund generally takes several business days to reach the original payment method. See Microsoft’s refund guidance.
If you bought the game through PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or another retailer, start with that seller’s refund process—not Microsoft’s. Rules and deadlines vary by store, country, purchase type, and circumstances, so check the current policy for the actual seller. A bundle purchase may also limit whether one component can be returned separately.

What changes on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile?
Xbox
On Xbox, the game purchase and the profile currently playing can be confused. To switch profiles, close Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, press the Xbox button, open Profile & System, select the current profile, choose Sign Out, then sign in to the profile connected to the purchasing account. The profile remains saved on the console and can be used again later.
PlayStation
The PlayStation Store purchase is associated with the PlayStation account. A linked Microsoft account is used for features such as cross-platform play, Realms, and Microsoft-connected Marketplace access; it is not a way to move the PlayStation game purchase. A PlayStation Network account can have only one Microsoft account linked at a time.
To replace the linked Microsoft account, in Minecraft go to Settings → Account → Unlink Microsoft account, then link the account you want. Unlinking does not transfer purchases from the old Microsoft account to the new one. Minecraft warns that Store purchases and unspent Tokens made on PlayStation remain on the PlayStation account, while Microsoft-linked benefits and access tied to another platform may be affected. Nintendo Switch and mobile
On Switch, Nintendo account ownership and Microsoft-connected features have separate roles. On Android and iOS, the purchase is made through the device’s app-store account, while a Microsoft account can enable Minecraft-connected features. Buying the game on one platform does not automatically unlock it on every other platform. Check Minecraft’s account requirements and the purchase record in the store that charged you.

Changing the account you sign in with is not the same as moving your game data. Back up local worlds before reinstalling, unlinking accounts, or switching profiles. The details depend on edition, platform, and where the data is stored.

If you need to move worlds to a new device, use the official install or transfer guidance for your platform. A world backup preserves world files, not purchases or profile ownership.

If you used an old Mojang account
The Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration period ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft says it no longer assists with migration-related queries. Creating a new account is not a substitute for recovering an old profile: in an existing multiplayer world, the new account may be treated as a new player, with different player data. See the migration information before assuming an old Java profile can be moved.
If you cannot access the account that paid
- Search every email inbox you used for the purchase confirmation.
- Use Microsoft’s official account-recovery process for the suspected address or account.
- After recovery, check its Order history and confirm the platform and edition.
- Avoid creating additional accounts or buying another copy until you identify the original purchase.
- If you contact official support, have the order number, purchase date, receipt email, platform and edition, gamertag, and screenshots of the mismatch ready. Provide payment details only through the official support process when requested.
Never send a password, full card number, or account-recovery code to an informal support account or stranger.
