HARMAN’s CES 2024 announcement was an expansion of its automotive technology portfolio—not a launch of gadgets for consumers to buy off the shelf. The company showcased more than a dozen new or expanded “Ready” offerings, spanning driver monitoring, windshield displays, vehicle connectivity, software-upgradable computing and seat-based audio. The central idea was to make the car cabin a connected, adaptable technology platform for automakers.

A broad automotive portfolio, with safety as one part of the story

Announced on January 8, 2024, HARMAN’s CES portfolio grouped into five areas: driver and occupant awareness, displays, vehicle computing and upgrades, connectivity, and in-cabin audio. HARMAN is an automotive supplier, so these offerings were principally intended for automaker integration. A trade-show reveal does not by itself establish that a system entered production or became available to drivers.

The company’s release described the portfolio as more than a dozen new products. That count encompasses product families, variants and expanded capabilities, rather than a dozen standalone consumer devices. HARMAN’s CES 2024 announcement is the primary source for the product descriptions below.

Ready Care: monitoring driver activity and cabin occupants

Ready Care was the announcement’s most direct safety-focused offering. HARMAN says it uses cabin sensors, AI and machine learning, with analysis informed by neuroscience, to assess visual and cognitive load and distinguish focused from distracted behavior. Its Driver Activity Detection can identify whether a driver’s hands are on the steering wheel and detect activities such as eating or smoking. The company describes interventions tailored to the situation, though the announcement does not specify a complete intervention sequence for every vehicle configuration.

  • Large, Easy-to-Read Display: Displays speed in MPH by default (up to 115 MPH) with a large font and anti-reflective metal shading, making it easy to read even for older drivers or while wearing sunglasses

Ready Care also includes Life and Child Presence Detection, which HARMAN says uses interior radar to distinguish adult and child occupants and determine their position. Such information could support vehicle safety functions, but the CES release does not establish that this system independently controls airbags or restraints, meets a universal certification, or serves as a standalone forgotten-child alert.

These are company-described capabilities, not published evidence of a particular detection accuracy or reduction in crashes. HARMAN did not disclose detailed error rates, the exact sensor suite for every configuration, regulatory validation, or performance across conditions such as occlusion, unusual seating positions and poor lighting. As with any cabin-monitoring system, automaker integration, testing and data governance matter. A monitoring feature should not be treated as a substitute for driver attention. HARMAN provides a further overview of Ready Care.

HARMAN also cited collaboration with Samsung, Gentherm and Adient on vital-sign and stress sensing, thermal management, seating and closed-loop interventions. Those partnerships point to a broader ambition: use information about the cabin and its occupants to adapt comfort and alerts, rather than rely only on a generic warning.

Ready Vision: putting selected information on the windshield

Ready Vision QVUE is a reflective display concept that places information—such as speed, mileage, driving statistics and alerts—in the lower windshield area. HARMAN described it as scalable from a cluster-replacement display to pillar-to-pillar coverage. The Ready Vision augmented-reality head-up display (AR HUD) adds navigation, traffic and hazard information, along with 3D object detection and data combined from multiple sensors.

The proposed safety advantage of a HUD is that useful information may be available closer to the driver’s forward view, reducing the need to look down at a central screen. That is not autonomous driving, nor does a windshield projection make every alert safer by default. Visibility, calibration, latency, the placement of graphics and the amount of information all affect whether the display helps or distracts. The announcement did not provide independent performance testing under varied road and weather conditions.

HARMAN described integrations or partnerships involving ChargePoint, The Weather Channel and Mavi.io OnMyWay for information related to EV charging, weather, navigation and commerce. Availability of such services would depend on the final vehicle integration and the services selected by an automaker.

Ready Display: more screens, with tools to coordinate them

HARMAN introduced Ready Display lines called NQ3, NQ5 and NQ7, with options ranging from HD to UHD and including curved displays. The company said the systems use technology derived from Samsung Neo QLED displays. That is a technology relationship, not a claim that an automotive screen performs identically to a home television; the vehicle’s environment, design and integration are different.

  • A MUST HAVE----If you don't want your driving record to have points on it or pat hundreds of dollars in speeding tickets; If on a major highway, you really want to know how fast you are going; If your wife get worried and want to see you're not driving so fast as she feels; Or if you would like to solve your problem of never knowing how fast you are going, this speedometer perfectly matches your need.
  • DRIVING MORE COMFORTABLE----When driving normally, the ambient light is blue color(automatically adjusts the brightness according to the environment ); when driving abnormally, such as speeding, the ambient light will be changed to Red color for alarming.
  • MORE SMOOTH & STABLE----Common meter only has OBD mode, but ours is dual mode: OBD+GPS 2-in-1, the default display OBD+GPS function at the same time, and data display is more abundant. OBD system, can read more than 100 kinds of data in the car. If the vehicle doesn't have OBD2 protocol, only displays GPS function.

Two software concepts address how multiple screens work together. Active Privacy is intended to limit passenger-screen content from the driver’s view when appropriate. QSCAPE is designed to coordinate the HARMAN user experience across displays placed behind a shared glass surface. Both address a real cabin-design challenge: adding screens can create useful passenger areas, but information must be managed so it does not compete with the driver’s attention.

Ready Upgrade: computing designed for a vehicle’s lifecycle

Ready Upgrade Base and Advanced are domain-controller platforms intended to support hardware and software upgrades over a vehicle’s life. The Base configuration targets rugged or utility vehicles and, in the described setup, could combine infotainment and instrument-cluster functions on one display. HARMAN cited an 8-inch display for that configuration; it is not a universal specification for every Ready Upgrade installation.

The Advanced system is aimed at premium vehicles with more displays, connected services and safety capabilities. HARMAN says it uses Samsung Exynos processors. The company also described a collaboration with TE Connectivity involving the NET-AX+ modular hybrid connector.

HARMAN said some Ready Upgrade implementations could reach market in as little as six months. That is a company-stated possibility, not a guaranteed timeline for an automaker program or a promise of a retail vehicle launch. Domain-controller hardware can provide a basis for adding or revising functions, but the automaker still determines vehicle architecture, software support, validation and which upgrades a particular model receives.

Ready Connect: modular telematics, not automatic future-proofing

Ready Connect is a telematics-control-unit portfolio designed to support modular upgrading from 4G to 5G. HARMAN described configurable features and integrated antennas developed with Samsung, with connected services spanning entertainment, productivity, mobility and situational awareness. It also cited Traffic Technology Services for real-time traffic-light information in the United States and Europe.

These capabilities depend on more than the telematics hardware. A vehicle needs compatible integration, cellular coverage, supported data services and ongoing software support; service availability may vary by region and automaker. A 4G-to-5G upgrade path does not guarantee that every future network or service will work in every vehicle, or that an owner can upgrade independently.

SeatSonic: audio built into the seats

SeatSonic moves audio components into the seats rather than relying only on speakers installed in doors, trunks and trim. HARMAN described near-field transducers in the headrest and a bass unit in the lumbar area, so occupants can hear—and feel—parts of the audio experience. The company positioned the design as flexible, lightweight and energy-saving, with potential for passenger-specific personalization, and said it was working with Adient on seat integration.

SeatSonic Plus adds Gentherm WellSense; SeatSonic Max combines WellSense, Ready Care and a branded audio package. These are vehicle-integration offerings, not home-audio products. Moving electronics into a seat creates packaging and integration considerations too: audio hardware must coexist with seating, wiring and safety systems, and performance can vary with occupant position and seat adjustment. The CES announcement provided no consumer price or production-vehicle specification.

What the Samsung connection means

HARMAN became a wholly owned Samsung subsidiary in 2017. At CES 2024, the companies’ relationship showed up in several specific areas HARMAN identified: Samsung Neo QLED-derived display technology, Exynos processors for the Advanced controller, collaboration on antennas and connectivity, and joint work on vital- and stress-sensing technology.

The strategic thread is the transfer of consumer-electronics capabilities—displays, computing and connected experiences—into automotive systems, where they must be adapted to automakers’ requirements and a vehicle’s operating environment. That is more consequential than treating Samsung’s involvement as branding alone.

Could consumers buy these technologies?

Generally, not as individual plug-in products. HARMAN’s Ready offerings are described as platforms and systems developed with automakers and integration partners. HARMAN’s automotive site presents them in that OEM-facing context.

It helps to separate five stages: a CES demonstration, an automaker’s development or sourcing decision, integration into a production vehicle, the vehicle becoming available to consumers, and any aftermarket offering. The CES announcement said some products could be “in-market as soon as this year,” but that wording did not guarantee a 2024 retail launch in every market. It named no specific production vehicle, consumer price or aftermarket channel for the portfolio.

HARMAN’s CES presentation is evidence of what the company announced, not independent proof of real-world reliability, crash reduction, comparative performance or consumer satisfaction. The eventual value of these technologies depends on implementation: whether displays are legible without overloading the driver, monitoring systems are dependable and appropriately governed, connected features remain supported, and upgrade plans reach vehicles rather than remaining proposals.
