ZRRO was a real 2015 Kickstarter project, not a released console. Israeli startup ZRRO Technologies proposed an Android TV box called the ZRRO Box and a distinctive ZRRO Pad that could detect fingers touching or hovering above its surface. The aim was to play touchscreen-oriented Android games on a television without requiring developers to add conventional gamepad controls. The campaign exceeded its $200,000 goal, but ZRRO later canceled the project after reporting that its prospective manufacturing partner had reneged. There is no verified official retail ZRRO available in 2026.

Contemporary coverage described the name as pronounced “zero.” Israel21c identified the company as a Tel Aviv, Israel startup.

Why ZRRO existed

Android games were built primarily for phones and tablets. Their controls often assume a touchscreen: tapping targets, dragging objects, swiping, pinching to zoom, or pressing several points at once. A television-connected Android box normally replaces that touchscreen with a gamepad, remote, mouse or air mouse. Those devices can work for games with explicit controller support, but they are awkward when an app expects direct touch.

ZRRO’s proposed solution was to put the touchscreen interaction on a dedicated controller while showing the resulting touch positions on the television. The system consisted of three parts:

  • ZRRO Box: the Android computing and HDMI-output unit.
  • ZRRO Pad: a flat multi-touch surface using the company’s zTouch technology.
  • Television: the large-screen display on which the Android interface and touch pointers would appear.

The pitch was broader compatibility with touchscreen software, not guaranteed support for every Android title. Liliputing’s campaign-era coverage explains the mismatch ZRRO was trying to address.

How the ZRRO Pad was supposed to work

The Pad was not a conventional controller with analog sticks and a grid of buttons. Its interaction model was closer to using a remote touchscreen:

  1. Hold or move one or more fingers above the Pad.
  2. The surface detects the approximate positions of those fingers.
  3. Corresponding pointers or touch locations appear on the TV.
  4. Touching the Pad confirms an action or performs a press.
  5. Moving fingers supports gestures such as swipes, drags and pinches.

The hover layer was intended to help a player locate fingers without looking down at the controller. Reports described zTouch as combining mutual-capacitance and self-capacitance sensing, but public information was preliminary and there is little independent hands-on validation. CNX Software and Android Authority covered the proposed sensing approach.

Reported Pad controls included power, volume, Recent Apps, Home and Back, in addition to multi-finger hover and touch. Secondary coverage also mentioned an accelerometer and vibration feedback; those details should be treated as campaign or press material, not verified specifications of a retail unit.

ZRRO Box: announced specifications

The following are campaign-era, planned specifications rather than measurements from a mass-produced consumer product.

Component Announced detail
Processor Amlogic S802, quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 2.0 GHz
Graphics Mali-450MP6, described in coverage as an eight-core GPU
Memory 2 GB RAM
Storage 16 GB flash
Expansion microSD reported up to 32 GB
Video output HDMI 1.4a, reportedly up to 4K at 30 Hz for video and pictures
USB Two USB 2.0 host ports
Networking Ethernet; some reports also mentioned Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Operating system Android 4.4 KitKat
Software access Planned Google Play Store and Android apps

CNX Software, Android Authority and SlashGear reported these details, with some differences in networking information. Dimensions, weight, battery details for the Pad, power requirements, final wireless implementation and other production data were not established.

What “up to 4K” did and did not mean

The 4K statement referred to planned HDMI video output, reportedly at 30 Hz for video and pictures. It did not demonstrate that games would render natively at 4K. The S802 was an older mobile chipset even in 2015, and ZRRO never reached a verified retail release on which sustained game performance could be tested.

Software compatibility was an objective, not a guarantee

Campaign coverage promoted access to more than one million Android games and apps. That was a statement about the size of the potential Android software universe, not proof that every title would function correctly through ZRRO’s touch emulation.

8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for Android devices, Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller with Hall Effect Joysticks and Hall Triggers (Black)
  • Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons
  • Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.

Likely trouble spots included:

  • Games designed around physical analog sticks or buttons.
  • Apps requiring a gyroscope, GPS, camera or other phone-specific sensor.
  • Titles tied to incompatible Android versions, Google certification or device-specific services.
  • Interfaces that scaled poorly from a handset to a television.
  • Fast games in which pointer accuracy or input latency mattered.

Touch emulation could make some touchscreen games more approachable from a sofa, but it was not the same as native controller support and could not reproduce every phone feature.

Kickstarter funding and planned delivery

ZRRO sought $200,000 on Kickstarter and contemporary reports said pledges passed that target. Early-bird rewards reportedly started at $149; other campaign tiers were listed at $179 or $199 depending on availability. The project discussed September or October 2015 delivery, but those were estimates made before the project was canceled, not an actual launch date. Android Authority and CNX Software documented the campaign pricing and schedule.

Why ZRRO was canceled

In November 2015, ZRRO announced that it was terminating the project. According to New Atlas, the company attributed the decision to its prospective manufacturing partner reneging on the agreement and said backers who had pledged more than $2 would be refunded. Liliputing separately reported the cancellation and refund plan.

That explanation is ZRRO’s stated account; available reporting does not independently establish every detail of the manufacturing dispute. Nor does it confirm that every planned refund was successfully processed. The essential outcome is clear: the funded proposal did not become a normal retail product.

What happened to zTouch?

The console and the sensing technology should be considered separately. In August 2015, Electronics Specifier reported that Arrow Electronics and STMicroelectronics had helped ZRRO develop a custom integrated circuit for the controller. That indicates serious engineering work, but it is not evidence of broad licensing adoption or a successful commercial product line.

Company information lists ZRRO Technologies as having ceased operations in the first quarter of 2019. IVC’s company listing is the available status reference.

Can you buy a ZRRO today?

There is no verified official retail channel for a new ZRRO in 2026. The project was canceled, the company is listed as inactive, and no current support or sales channel has been established. An occasional second-hand listing would not prove that the seller has a complete, working system or access to firmware and replacement parts.

Be wary of listings that use “ZRRO” to describe an unrelated Android TV box, air mouse or Bluetooth touchpad. Those products do not automatically include the Pad’s integrated hover sensing, software integration or the proposed touch-emulation behavior.

What the idea got right—and why it remained risky

ZRRO identified a genuine interface problem. Hover detection could help a player find fingers without staring at a handheld surface, while multi-touch gestures were more faithful to mobile games than a standard gamepad. The proposed box was also relatively inexpensive by 2015 micro-console standards.

But the concept depended on several difficult pieces working together: accurate near-field tracking, low latency, reliable manufacturing, a usable Android build, compatible applications and a television-friendly interface. Important questions—including hover range, calibration, simultaneous-finger limits, wireless details, battery life, final Android version, Google certification, thermal behavior and sustained performance—were never answered by a verified production unit.

For a modern Android TV device, products such as the Google TV Streamer or NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro may be practical alternatives, but neither is a successor to ZRRO’s hover-touch controller.
