The Hyetis Crossbow was announced in 2013 as an extraordinary hybrid: a Swiss-made automatic mechanical watch paired with a camera, GPS, biometric sensors and smartphone connectivity. Hyetis promoted a limited first run at roughly $1,200, later reported around $1,500. The important qualification is that the Crossbow is not a documented commercial success. Delivery slipped, customers sought refunds, the company’s website went offline, and later reporting could verify a prototype presentation but not broad fulfillment.
In other words, the Crossbow was a real and unusually ambitious project, but the public record supports calling it a prototype-era promise with unverified retail delivery—not a normally supported smartwatch you can buy today.
The original Hyetis pitch
Geneva-based startup Hyetis presented the Crossbow in August 2013, when smartwatches were still an emerging category. Founder Arny Kapshitzer argued that people checking the time on phones represented an opportunity for a new kind of watch. The target was affluent international buyers who wanted Swiss-watch identity without giving up connected features.
Contemporary coverage described an automatic mechanical movement, a digital display, a camera at or near 12 o’clock, strap-based biometric sensing, GPS and several wireless interfaces. Hyetis marketed the watch as Swiss-made and said it used a Swiss-made automatic movement. That does not establish that every component was manufactured in Switzerland; the exact manufacturing and certification record is not available in the surviving coverage.

Kapshitzer also claimed that established Swiss brands had rejected the concept and warned that traditional watchmakers were ignoring connected watches. Hyetis reportedly sought about 1% of the global smartwatch market and tens of millions of Swiss francs in 2014 revenue. Those were forecasts and positioning statements, not results.
Swissinfo reported that the first 500 watches were nearly or effectively sold. That statement should not be confused with 500 completed deliveries.
What the Crossbow was supposed to include

The initial specifications came largely from Hyetis promotional material and descriptions of renders or prototypes. TechCrunch, Engadget and Android Headlines repeated many of these claims, but none provides the kind of sustained hands-on testing that would establish production performance.

Why the mechanical movement mattered
“Mechanical smartwatch” did not mean that the gears powered the camera, GPS or wireless radios. The automatic movement and the electronic system were separate. The mechanical mechanism was intended to keep displaying time when the electronics battery was exhausted; the camera, sensors, display and connectivity still required batteries.

That architecture gave the Crossbow a compelling identity. It could appeal to someone who valued mechanical watchmaking but wanted connected functions. It also created difficult engineering trade-offs: more thickness and weight, more heat and power-management problems, harder waterproofing, and a far more complicated service path than either a conventional watch or a simple electronics-only smartwatch.
The 41-megapixel headline was especially dramatic in 2013. But megapixels alone say nothing about sensor size, lens quality, image processing or usable image quality. The available reporting contains no sensor dimensions, sample photographs, lens data or independent resolution test. The careful conclusion is that the camera was a prominent Hyetis claim, not a proven production capability.
Timeline: promise, delay and a prototype
- August 2013: Hyetis announces the Crossbow, promoting the mechanical movement, 41-megapixel camera, sensors, wireless connectivity and a price near $1,200.
- Late 2013: Early material promises delivery by the end of the year, with an initial run of about 500 units.
- 2014: Delivery is delayed and customers and investors begin complaining.
- August 2014: Swiss reporting describes customers seeking refunds and says the watch has not arrived as expected.
- December 2014 and January 2015 reporting: Le Temps reports repeated postponements, a website shutdown and an inability to verify that a delivered Hyetis smartwatch existed.
- June 2015: Reports describe Hyetis Technologies and a new investor structure intended to preserve the project.
- October 2015: A report says Hyetis presented its first functional smartwatch to media at EPFL.
The 2015 presentation matters, but “functional presentation” is not the same as mass production, preorder fulfillment or a continuing retail and software-support business.

Kapshitzer’s interview positioning explains why the Crossbow was so ambitious. He saw a market opening between luxury watches and consumer electronics, believed Swiss makers were underestimating connected watches, and aimed at buyers willing to pay for unusual materials and craftsmanship. The reported 500-unit first series and the proposed 1% market share made the project sound commercially imminent.

Later events make that confidence part of the story. A nearly sold-out reservation list can demonstrate interest, but it cannot demonstrate that customers received working watches. Likewise, a founder’s revenue target cannot be used as evidence of revenue achieved.
How reliable were the headline specifications?
41-megapixel camera: Widely reported, but not independently tested. No surviving evidence establishes that the camera reached a finished retail device.
Four-day battery: A company claim, not a measured endurance result. Actual battery life would have depended heavily on camera, display, GPS and wireless use.

Water resistance: Contemporary reports conflict sharply, citing both 250 metres/25 ATM and an extraordinary 15,000-metre figure. The latter should be treated as a reported promotional specification, not a verified diving rating.

Swiss-made status: Hyetis marketed the Crossbow as Swiss-made and described a Swiss-made movement. That wording should not be expanded into a claim that every component originated in Switzerland.
Units sold: “Nearly all 500” reportedly had buyers or reservations. That is not the same as 500 shipments.

The central failure was the gap between preorder confidence and verifiable fulfillment. Missed dates were followed by refund concerns, uncertain communication and website downtime. A hybrid mechanical/electronic watch also had to solve several hard problems simultaneously: integrating a camera and radios into a wearable case, keeping power consumption manageable, maintaining water resistance, supporting multiple phone platforms and providing service for both precision mechanics and custom electronics.

Early coverage often repeated the specification sheet without following the delivery story. It also treated “first Swiss smartwatch” as an established historical fact, even though “first” depends on how the category is defined. The more defensible description is that Hyetis positioned the Crossbow as an early Swiss luxury smartwatch.

Was it a scam?
The available record does not justify a legal conclusion of fraud or calling the project a scam. It does support a narrower conclusion: customers experienced delays and refund uncertainty, investors complained, and journalists could not establish broad delivery. The project may have produced prototypes or demonstration units, but successful commercial fulfillment remains unverified.
If you find one for sale today
- Do not assume a listing proves that the original product shipped widely.
- Ask for provenance, serial information and clear photographs of the actual watch.
- Assume batteries, pairing services, apps and servers may no longer work.
- Do not pay a premium solely for “41 megapixels” or “Swiss-made” wording.
- Treat it as an obscure collectible or prototype-related object, not as a supported modern smartwatch.
For context, products such as Pebble, Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2 took a more focused electronics approach in the same era. Modern Apple, Samsung, Garmin and Wear OS watches are far more practical for software, health tracking and support, while a traditional Swiss mechanical watch is the safer choice for long-term mechanical craftsmanship. None is a direct replacement for the Crossbow’s attempted combination of both categories.
Verdict
The Hyetis Crossbow was neither an ordinary smartwatch nor a documented mass-market success. It was a genuine, technically ambitious 2013 project that tried to combine Swiss mechanical legitimacy with an unusually large list of electronic features. A 2015 functional demonstration suggests the idea progressed beyond a render, but the evidence does not establish regular retail availability, completed original preorders or a lasting support ecosystem.
The most accurate historical label is therefore: an important early mechanical-smartwatch concept and prototype project whose commercial delivery was never independently verified.
