Blue Origin’s New Glenn was targeted for a second launch attempt on Thursday, January 16, 2025, after an earlier countdown was scrubbed. The planned window was 1:00–4:00 a.m. Eastern Time (06:00–09:00 UTC) from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

That window was not a guarantee. Weather, vehicle readiness and range scheduling could still have stopped the attempt. New Glenn ultimately lifted off at 2:03 a.m. EST, reached its intended orbit and achieved the NG-1 mission’s primary objective. Its first-stage recovery attempt, however, did not succeed.

Why was the first New Glenn attempt scrubbed?

Blue Origin attributed the earlier scrub to ice forming in a purge line associated with an auxiliary power unit. The system supports hydraulic functions, making it a significant vehicle-readiness concern during the countdown.

A scrub is not the same as a failed launch: the rocket was stopped before liftoff. Engineers had to determine whether the condition could recur and whether the vehicle was safe to proceed. The available contemporaneous reporting does not establish the precise root cause of the ice formation or specify whether the line was redesigned, modified or simply cleared and otherwise mitigated.

Why was the retry moved to Thursday?

Blue Origin initially considered another attempt early Tuesday before moving the target to Thursday. The change reflected a combination of factors rather than one definitively documented cause.

Weather remained a major risk

Forecast guidance cited roughly a 70% probability of unfavorable conditions. The concerns included cumulus clouds, thick cloud layers and winds at liftoff. Launch providers must meet flight-safety rules covering conditions such as lightning risk, visibility, cloud structure, wind and the rocket’s trajectory.

Weather therefore threatened the attempt, but the reporting does not prove that weather alone caused the Thursday move. The safest description is that Blue Origin was balancing unfavorable weather with technical readiness and operational scheduling.

A rocket cannot simply restart the countdown

A rapid retry also requires replenishing liquid oxygen, methane and other launch commodities. Engineers must inspect the vehicle, address the triggering issue and work through a fresh countdown. That makes a 24-hour turnaround more complicated than moving a calendar appointment.

Wednesday’s Falcon 9 launch affected availability

A SpaceX Falcon 9 carrying two private lunar landers was expected to launch during a similar early-morning period on Wednesday. That mission affected shared range and operational scheduling, so Blue Origin could not simply roll New Glenn to the following morning. The range, airspace, maritime and mission-support constraints meant Thursday became the next practical target, although the Falcon 9 mission was not necessarily the only factor.

What is New Glenn?

New Glenn is Blue Origin’s large reusable orbital rocket. According to the company’s published vehicle specifications, it stands more than 320 feet (98 meters) tall and uses a reusable first stage, a seven-meter payload fairing, seven BE-4 engines on the first stage and two restartable BE-3U engines on the second stage.

Blue Origin publishes a projected capacity of more than 13 metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit and up to 45 metric tons to low Earth orbit. It also says the first stage is designed for a minimum of 25 flights and that the fairing offers approximately twice the volume of a conventional five-meter-class fairing.

Those figures are manufacturer-published capabilities and design targets. They should not be treated as independently demonstrated performance results. Likewise, Blue Origin’s goal of improving launch affordability and availability through reusability is a design objective, not proof that New Glenn is cheaper than another launcher.

What was the NG-1 mission supposed to do?

NG-1 was designed to demonstrate the vehicle while carrying the Blue Ring Pathfinder payload. Its planned flight profile included:

  1. Liftoff from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
  2. First-stage ascent and separation.
  3. Autonomous descent of the booster toward an offshore landing platform in the Atlantic.
  4. Ignition of the two BE-3U engines on the second stage.
  5. Payload-fairing separation.
  6. Deployment or continued flight of the Blue Ring Pathfinder in medium Earth orbit.

Blue Origin listed approximate NG-1 orbital parameters of a 19,300-kilometer apogee, a 2,400-kilometer perigee and a 30-degree inclination.

How successful was the flight?

NG-1 had several layers of success, so its result cannot be reduced to a simple pass-or-fail label.

Smartivity DIY Rocket Launcher STEM Kit for Kids 6-12 Years
  • BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
  • REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
  • SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
  • STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
  • RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
  • Primary objective: New Glenn reached its intended orbit.
  • Vehicle demonstration: The flight tested ascent, staging and second-stage operation in actual flight.
  • Payload mission: The Blue Ring Pathfinder mission proceeded as part of the orbital flight.
  • Recovery demonstration: The reusable first stage was intended to land autonomously on an offshore platform, but that recovery attempt did not succeed.

The orbital objective was the most important initial milestone. The unsuccessful booster recovery showed that the broader reusable-launch demonstration was incomplete, but it did not erase the fact that New Glenn achieved its primary orbital mission.

Why the maiden flight mattered

New Glenn’s first actual flight was a major test for Blue Origin’s entry into orbital launch. The mission put the company’s large launch vehicle, its BE-4-powered first stage and its reusable-booster plans through an operational flight sequence for the first time.

At the time of the original headline, “another launch attempt” meant another attempt after a pre-launch scrub—not the second flight after an earlier orbital failure. NG-1 was New Glenn’s first flight, and the January 16 launch provided the first in-flight evidence that the vehicle could reach orbit.

Where to watch the launch replay

Because the launch occurred in January 2025, readers should not look for a live Thursday countdown. Blue Origin’s NG-1 mission page includes a replay of the New Glenn Mission NG-1 webcast.

The bottom line

Blue Origin shifted New Glenn’s second launch attempt to a 1:00–4:00 a.m. ET window on Thursday, January 16, 2025, after a scrub linked to ice in an auxiliary-power-unit purge line. Weather concerns, turnaround work and a competing Wednesday Falcon 9 mission also shaped the schedule. New Glenn eventually launched at 2:03 a.m. ET and reached its intended orbit, while the attempted recovery of its reusable first stage failed.
