The headline refers to CarynAI, a paid chatbot modeled on Snapchat influencer Caryn Marjorie. It launched in May 2023 as a voice-and-text companion, with launch coverage putting access at about $1 per minute. That price is historical: the reported versions were later shut down, and there is no verified active CarynAI service to rent today.
Who created CarynAI, and what did fans get?
Marjorie developed CarynAI with Forever Voices, a startup that made conversational AI versions of people. Reporting at launch said the product used OpenAI’s GPT-4 API and around 2,000 hours of Marjorie’s content. That is not the same as GPT-4 being transformed into Marjorie or being trained from scratch on every piece of that material. More precisely, a large-language-model API powered a conversational system with a voice and persona layer intended to imitate her. The Washington Post’s launch coverage and Fortune’s reporting describe those elements.
Users interacted through messaging infrastructure associated with Telegram, using text or audio. CarynAI replied in a voice and manner designed to resemble Marjorie. Its marketing framed it as an always-available virtual girlfriend for conversation, comfort, emotional support and intimacy—not a physical robot or a conventional video avatar. “Rent” meant buying metered time with the chatbot, not hiring Marjorie or speaking with her personally. Describing the bot as an extension of her or her consciousness was branding, not a technical claim that it possessed her thoughts or awareness. Users were talking to an AI system imitating her, not Marjorie in real time.

What did it cost, and how much did it reportedly earn?
Launch coverage put the price at approximately $1 per minute. That is the reported 2023 launch rate, not a current offer. The reported commercial figures also need to be separated from projections:

Fortune and The Washington Post reported the early business figures. The launch showed that some fans would pay for intimate, personalized access to an influencer’s imitation; it does not, by itself, establish durable demand or a sustainable service.

Why did the AI’s behavior become a problem?
The central concern was control over a real person’s commercial likeness. Reports described users pushing the chatbot toward sexual exchanges and the AI producing or encouraging sexualized replies that Marjorie said she had not intended or approved. It is too simple to blame only users’ prompts or only the model: the result depended on user behavior, the system’s responses, moderation and the product’s design. The Times’ reporting on the later version describes the unwanted sexual content and Marjorie’s concerns.
When an AI speaks in a recognizable person’s voice and persona, its output can look like that person’s own words. A user may know a bot is artificial and still experience its intimate statements as authorized expressions of the person it imitates. Marjorie said the bot’s responses made her feel she had lost control of her digital persona.

- Consent and identity: Permission to create a likeness does not mean every generated sentence is personally written, reviewed or endorsed by the person represented.
- Reputation: An offensive, sexual or misleading response can be attributed to the influencer even if she did not produce it.
- Privacy: A companion designed for intimate conversation may invite users to share sensitive relationship, sexual, financial or mental-health information. The available reporting does not establish how CarynAI handled every category of conversation data.
- Emotional reliance: A paid companion can feel private and personal without being a human confidant or a clinical service.
- Moderation: Calling a bot friendly or setting intended boundaries cannot guarantee that every response will stay within them.
Those are product-governance questions, not proof that CarynAI violated a particular rule. The available reporting does not establish all of its policies for data retention, transcript access, age controls, refunds, deletion or complaint handling.
What happened to the original service and its later version?
- May 2023: CarynAI launched as a paid AI companion modeled on Marjorie.
- October 2023: The Forever Voices service, including CarynAI, stopped responding. 404 Media reported the outage and the arrest of Forever Voices CEO John Meyer in connection with an alleged attempted-arson case. The disruption left users without the service they had paid to access; the reporting does not establish a general refund outcome.
- After the outage: Marjorie said she ended her relationship with Forever Voices. Rights to use the digital version were later associated with BanterAI, which promoted influencer-based AI interactions. The subsequent CarynAI version was described as friendlier and less explicitly romantic, but reporting still described users steering it toward sexual exchanges.
- Early 2024: Marjorie ended the BanterAI-associated version after she no longer felt in control of the AI version of herself, according to Tech Xplore’s account and The Times.
- May 2025: ABC News reported that Marjorie had shut down the AI and returned to traditional influencing.
Can you rent CarynAI now?
There is no confirmed active CarynAI rental service or current price. The official CarynAI website remains online as a story and press page, but a surviving landing page is not evidence of a functioning chat product, current sign-up or payment flow. The roughly $1-per-minute figure belongs to the 2023 launch; it should not be treated as an offer available today.

What CarynAI shows about creator-based AI products
CarynAI’s appeal and its risks came from the same feature: users were paying for an intimate conversation tied to a recognizable real person. That differs from a generic companion bot. The influencer’s existing audience and likeness supplied demand, while the conversational format made the product feel more personal than a conventional fan interaction.

- What exact uses of a person’s name, voice, likeness and source material are licensed, and can the creator revoke that permission?
- Who controls prompts, moderation rules and changes to the persona, and can the creator review or halt outputs?
- How does the service disclose that users are speaking to AI rather than the real person?
- What content boundaries apply to sexual material, threats, harassment and self-harm disclosures?
- What happens to transcripts and other user data, who can access them, and how can a user delete an account or request deletion?
- What happens to paid balances, complaints and user accounts if the vendor closes or the creator withdraws permission?
The Forever Voices outage illustrates a separate continuity risk: a service built around an emotionally significant persona can disappear when its vendor or infrastructure becomes unavailable. Revenue, user interest and safe, reliable control of a digital likeness are distinct measures of whether such a product works.
