You can play plenty of games without a dedicated graphics card—especially 2D indies, card and strategy games, browser games, and older 3D titles. Most computers described as having “no GPU” still have integrated graphics built into the processor. What will run depends on that exact graphics chip, memory, cooling, and the game’s requirements. Current, demanding AAA games are usually a poor fit for weak integrated graphics, though cloud gaming can stream them to a modest computer.
First: “no GPU” usually means no dedicated graphics card
A computer needs a graphics processor to render games. In a laptop or budget desktop, that processor is often integrated into the CPU or its platform: examples include Intel UHD, Iris Xe, Intel Arc integrated graphics, and AMD Radeon graphics. An APU combines CPU and GPU functions. These integrated GPUs share system memory, rather than using the dedicated video memory found on many graphics cards.
Integrated graphics range from very basic chips that are best for simple games to modern designs capable of running a much wider selection. A recent AMD Radeon 780M, for example, is not equivalent to an old Intel HD 4000. Microsoft describes integrated GPUs as suitable for some gaming and discrete GPUs as better suited to heavier workloads; see its GPU overview.

Games that are safest bets
These categories are generally the most forgiving on computers without a dedicated GPU. The examples are candidates, not guarantees: check the game’s current requirements and your own GPU model before buying.
- 2D and pixel-art games: Stardew Valley, Terraria, Undertale, Celeste, and Hollow Knight. Many 2D games are lightweight, although resolution, effects, and the specific integrated GPU still matter.
- Card, puzzle, and turn-based games: Balatro, Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, FTL: Faster Than Light, and Papers, Please. These are often good choices for office laptops because they place less demand on graphics hardware.
- Lightweight action and roguelike games: Vampire Survivors and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth are worth considering. Performance can still vary in scenes with many effects or on older hardware.
- Older 3D games: Portal and Portal 2 are possibilities, particularly on newer integrated graphics. Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and older entries in the Civilization series may also be reasonable candidates, but are more dependent on the GPU and settings.
- Browser games and classic emulation: Many browser games and games for older systems have modest requirements. Emulation is not automatically effortless: compatibility and performance depend on the emulator, system being emulated, and game.
Minecraft can work on some integrated graphics without shader packs, but high render distances, shader packs, large modpacks, and busy worlds can change the workload substantially.
What may work on modern integrated graphics
Recent Intel and AMD integrated graphics can run more than simple 2D games, but performance varies considerably between processors and devices. Lightweight 3D indies, older role-playing games, stylized games, and some competitive titles may be playable at low or medium settings. League of Legends, Dota 2, and The Sims 4 are examples to check against your system; do not assume a particular frame rate from the game name alone.

Stronger, recent integrated graphics may also run selected more demanding games at reduced resolution and low settings, sometimes with upscaling and a 30fps target. Titles such as Valheim, Risk of Rain 2, or No Man’s Sky are highly hardware-dependent and should be treated as experiments, not safe recommendations. A PCWorld roundup of 2026 low-power-PC games likewise notes that some newer titles may require reduced effects on older hardware, and that a game near the upper edge of the category can struggle on truly old systems: PCWorld’s 2026 examples.
Current AAA releases, ray-traced games, VR titles, and large open-world games are generally poor local choices for a weak integrated GPU. They are not all impossible: the game’s graphics requirements, supported features, driver support, and your particular hardware decide the result.
Find your graphics chip and memory
On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Performance and GPU. Record the exact GPU name. Select Memory to see installed system RAM. “Intel graphics” or “Radeon graphics” alone is too vague to judge a game reliably; a specific model is more useful.

Integrated graphics use system RAM, so both capacity and memory configuration can matter. A system with 8GB of single-channel memory may perform worse than a similar system with 16GB in a dual-channel configuration. Memory speed, other programs’ memory use, and the GPU’s architecture also matter; adding RAM alone cannot overcome every graphics limitation.

The same integrated GPU can behave differently in a thin fanless laptop, a low-power ultrabook, and a well-cooled desktop. Power limits and heat affect sustained performance. Test while plugged in, and remember that a laptop may slow down after heating up or perform differently on battery.

- Choose 1280×720 or 1280×800 as a starting resolution. Try 1600×900 or 1920×1080 only if the game is still running comfortably.
- Select the low preset, reduce render scale if available, and turn off ray tracing.
- Reduce shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, volumetric effects, foliage, view distance, and crowd density. These settings can be particularly demanding.
- Use an upscaling option if the game offers one. An upscaled image may look softer than native resolution.
- Cap the frame rate at 30fps or 60fps to avoid asking the system to render more frames than it can sustain.
- Update graphics drivers through the laptop maker or GPU maker, plug in the power adapter, use the appropriate performance mode, and close unnecessary background apps and overlays.
- Play a demanding section for long enough to check for heat-related slowdowns, stutter, crashes, missing textures, or input delay. A title screen is not a meaningful performance test.
Lowering resolution and effects is often more useful than lowering texture quality first. But if system memory is tight, high textures can also cause problems.
Check a specific game before buying
- Find the exact GPU model and RAM amount using Task Manager’s Performance tab.
- Read the game developer’s current minimum requirements. Compare the listed GPU, RAM, DirectX or shader requirements, operating-system version, and storage—not just the game’s general description. Microsoft also advises checking the developer’s requirements for a particular game in its GPU guidance.
- Look for a demo or other way to try the game before committing. Check the relevant store’s refund policy rather than assuming a purchase can be refunded.
- If you install it, begin at 720p and low settings. Test actual gameplay, not only the menu, and raise settings one step at a time.
“Playable” can mean very different things. Launchable means it opens; technically playable means you can progress; comfortably playable means performance and frame times feel tolerable; and competitive playable means input response and consistency are suitable for serious multiplayer. A game that opens but stutters badly is not running well.
Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook differences
Windows has a broad PC game selection and commonly lists the hardware requirements you need to check. On Linux or SteamOS, the Steam Deck’s compatibility labels can help, but they are not a performance guarantee for a different computer. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified information defines Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown labels against the Deck’s specific hardware and software—including its display, controls, Proton compatibility, and launch experience. A Deck Verified game may still run poorly on an older Intel integrated GPU.

Chromebooks have a narrower local game selection shaped by ChromeOS, Android and Linux support, and game availability; cloud gaming may be more practical. On macOS, compatibility depends on the game’s Mac support, processor architecture, graphics API, and any translation layer. Cloud streaming can avoid some local rendering limits, but it cannot make an unavailable game or service catalogue available.
When cloud gaming makes more sense
With cloud gaming, a remote server renders the game and sends a video stream to your device. Your computer still needs to decode and display that stream, and the experience depends on connection quality, latency, service support, and sometimes a controller. It is not the same as running the game locally.
GeForce NOW can be an option if the game is supported and you have a reliable connection. NVIDIA’s system requirements list 15 Mbps for 720p at up to 60fps, 25 Mbps for 1080p at up to 60fps, and recommend less than 80ms latency to an NVIDIA data center. Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi is recommended. The service supports browser access on listed browsers and devices, while some features require a Premium or Ultimate membership. A subscription does not provide every PC game: support and whether you must own a game vary by title.

Microsoft’s getting-started guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and describes access across supported Windows, Mac, Chromebook, mobile, and other devices, with browser use available on many of them. Many games require a controller, though some support mouse and keyboard. Cloud access, PC downloads, console access, and ownership are distinct; check the current service page and game catalogue for your region and plan before subscribing. Prices and included games can change.
Streaming is a poor fit for unstable or capped internet, offline play, games where latency is critical, or titles absent from the service. The trade-off is paying for a service and accepting network delay or compressed image quality in exchange for avoiding local GPU demands.
Choose the right route
- Play locally if you want indie, 2D, browser, or older games; need offline access; or have unreliable internet.
- Try cloud gaming if your target game is too demanding locally, it is supported by a service in your region, and your connection is stable enough.
- Consider a handheld or mini PC with stronger integrated graphics if you want a gaming-focused device with a known hardware target. Check the exact GPU, memory configuration, cooling, and sustained performance—not just the CPU brand. A Steam Deck uses an AMD APU; it is not evidence that every integrated-GPU PC performs the same way.
- Consider a dedicated GPU or gaming PC if you want current AAA games, high resolutions, high refresh rates, ray tracing, broad compatibility, or dependable offline performance. A desktop GPU upgrade also needs a suitable power supply, case clearance, and cooling; most thin laptops cannot have their graphics upgraded this way.
An external GPU enclosure is a possibility for some compatible laptops, but it requires a suitable Thunderbolt or faster connection, an enclosure and desktop GPU, extra power and cabling, and acceptance of cost and bandwidth limitations. Confirm the specific computer supports it before considering the expense.
