“Used Ads” is a broad Google activity label for advertising-related activity. It does not, by itself, prove that you clicked an ad, bought something, or intentionally interacted with an advertisement. Google’s current public help pages describe several kinds of advertising-related activity, but they do not precisely define this historical label. Treat it as an imprecise category, then inspect its details and review your privacy controls.
What Google’s “Used Ads” label may refer to
Google documents advertising-related activity that can include ads you click, purchases on an advertiser’s site, activity from partner websites and apps that use Google services, and interactions with ads or content. Saved searches, YouTube viewing, installed Android apps, general areas where you use Google, and account information can also be used to personalize ads when the relevant settings are enabled. See Google’s Web & App Activity explanation.
Those documented categories do not decode every entry labelled “Used Ads.” The label could represent an ad interaction, activity connected with Google’s ad-serving systems, activity from a site or app showing Google ads, information used for ad personalization, or a legacy summary whose underlying event is no longer shown in detail. A 2019 Google Account Help Community question shows that users saw the label without an official explanation, and the thread was locked: Google’s “Used Ads” discussion.
| What is documented | What the label does not establish |
|---|---|
| Clicked ads, advertiser-site purchases, partner-site or app activity, and data used for ad relevance can be saved under applicable settings. | That this particular entry was an ad click, a purchase, or a specific advertiser interaction. |
| Google may use searches, YouTube History, Android apps, ad interactions, and general-area information for personalized ads. | That Google sold your information, used your microphone or camera, or that your account was compromised. |
Does “Used Ads” mean you clicked an ad?
Not necessarily. Google explicitly lists clicked ads as one type of Web & App Activity, but the “Used Ads” wording is too vague to identify the event. Open the item and check its timestamp, product, device, browser, and any linked activity before deciding what happened. If those details are absent, Google’s public documentation does not provide a more precise interpretation.

How Google activity can personalize ads
When personalized ads are available and enabled for your account, Google may combine several signals and choices:
- Google Account information such as age range, gender, and language preference.
- Searches and other saved activity.
- YouTube History.
- Apps installed on Android.
- Ads or content with which you interacted.
- Activity from partner sites and apps saved under the relevant controls.
- General areas where you have used Google, rather than a precise address.
- Topics, brands, and other choices made in My Ad Center.
For example, searches for running videos or YouTube viewing about running may be used to show an ad for running shorts when the applicable activity settings and personalized-ads control are on. Google describes these controls at Activity used to personalize ads.
Personalized versus non-personalized ads
Personalized ads can use account information, saved activity, and inferred interests to select more relevant advertising. Non-personalized ads still appear, but selection relies more on context such as the page or video topic, an active search, the time of day, current or approximate location, and recently watched content. Google explains the distinction at How personalized and non-personalized ads work.

My Activity and My Ad Center are different controls
My Activity is where you review, filter, and delete saved activity from Google products, sites, apps, and devices using Google services. My Ad Center controls whether eligible account information and activity are used to personalize ads, along with topics, brands, and sensitive categories. The systems overlap, but deleting a history item and stopping ad personalization are separate actions.

- Open My Activity and sign in to the Google Account you want to check.
- Use search or filters for the “Used Ads” wording. My Activity supports filtering by date, product, and keyword.
- Open the entry, if Google offers an expanded view.
- Review the date, time, Google product, device, browser, and linked activity.
- Verify the signed-in account before deciding that the event was yours.
On a shared phone, computer, or browser, activity can be saved to whichever account was active. Multiple Google Accounts keep separate histories, so an unexpected entry is not automatically evidence of unauthorized access. You can review security events, recent sign-ins, and connected devices if the device or timing still looks unfamiliar.
How to stop activity being used for personalized ads
Use Google’s current My Ad Center rather than older instructions that refer only to “Ads Settings.”
- Open My Ad Center.
- Select Manage privacy.
- Under Activity used to personalize ads, review Activity on sites and apps, YouTube History, and Areas where you’ve used Google.
- Turn off any category you do not want used for ad personalization, then confirm the change.
Google says these choices can affect ads on Google Search, YouTube, Discover, and Google sites, depending on the particular setting. Availability and wording can vary by account, device, product, and country; Google is rolling out updated controls gradually. In the European Economic Area, linked-services settings can also affect how account activity is used for ads.
How to turn off personalized ads entirely
- Open My Ad Center.
- Find the Personalized ads control.
- Switch it to Off and confirm.
Google says that, with personalized ads off, it will not use information and activity saved to your Google Account or your My Ad Center choices to show personalized ads. This is not a universal ad blocker: ads can remain and may be selected using contextual factors. Customizing topics or brands changes the types of ads, not generally the number of ads. See Google’s overview of turning personalized ads on or off and topic and brand controls.

No. My Ad Center controls whether eligible information is used for personalized advertising. It does not automatically erase Web & App Activity, YouTube History, or other records already saved to your account.

To remove records, use My Activity’s deletion controls or the individual history settings. Google documents filtering and deletion at My Activity help. You can delete individual items, a time range, or available activity in bulk. Deleting history may reduce recommendations and other personalized Google experiences. Browser history, cookies, app data, and device records require separate controls.
What changes when Web & App Activity is turned off?
Google lets you turn Web & App Activity off, turn it off while deleting associated activity, or continue managing categories separately. When it is on, Google may save activity from Google products and, if the additional option is enabled, activity from Chrome and sites, apps, and devices that use Google services. Turning it off can change personalized Google experiences, but it is not identical to every My Ad Center advertising control. Details are in Web & App Activity settings.

An unexplained “Used Ads” entry alone is too vague to prove account compromise. Investigate further when the expanded details show an unfamiliar device, browser, location, or time, or when other security alerts appear.

Important edge cases
Signed-out browsing
Google says search and ad experiences can still be customized using activity while you are signed out. Incognito or private browsing can reduce association with a signed-in account, but it does not make you invisible to websites, networks, or the device.
Accounts for users under 18
Google says accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 are not personalized using the listed account information in the same way. Age settings, supervision, country, and product-specific rules can change the result.
Google services versus partner sites
Controls and data flows can differ between Google services and third-party sites or apps that display Google ads. Do not assume that one switch describes every advertising system a browser encounters.
The Bottom Line
“Used Ads” is best read as a broad advertising-related activity record, not proof of a click or purchase. Check the entry in My Activity, then use My Ad Center to control ad personalization and My Activity’s separate tools to delete saved history.
